Low Coolant Level! Coolant Expansion Tank Install on 2006 Range Rover

A common problem on LR3 or Range Rover Sport (Supercharged and non-Supercharged), you may get a warning on the instrument cluster that states "Low Coolant Level," which will prompt you to check the coolant bottle only to see there is plenty of coolant.
What has happened is that the small float in the bottom of the tank becomes saturated and loses it's "float-ability" so that it sits at the tank's bottom to register as a Low Level warning.

Advice for anyone doing this - remove the headlight, its the easiest headlight you'll ever remove and it opens up all kinds of room to work on the tank, especially on HSE models with the diesel heater tight behind the tank limiting space

Couldn't agree more with those that talk about removing the head light!!! REMOVE THE HEADLIGHT! Directly behind the headlight is everything you need with far easier access than the method he used. Other than that, the video is still rather useful and appreciated.

They don’t tell you that if you coolant mixture has to much water in it that the float won’t float. To much water causes it to sink. Check your coolant mix, 50/50.

Great video, good tip on the clamp tool. Also found some inexpensive tools for clamping off hoses. Would also encourage removing the headlight to improve room and access.

I find this method very difficult vs removing the headlights. BTW...for novice individual be careful not to disconnect the windshield wiper spout. Just saying NOTE: I replaced both the hemostat and Coolant Expansion Tank in 2 hrs and I took my time. :-)

Will air in the coolant system give you a rough idle ? I just installed alternator and I removed the reservoirs top hose and moved the tank out the way. So I can have more space. I put everything back how it was and now I get rough idle Car idles around 1000rpm 2006 Range Rover SC 4.2

Does this apply to Range Rover L322, particularly for 2012? I have the same problem but the parts are different.

Tip for anyone with aftermarket overflow tanks mine did not fit properly when in back clip and guide hole the holes where 5-10mm out. I had to put 3x washers behind back clip and then it was flush. Check this before reattaching that fiddly bottom hose.

Where does the air bleeder hose go down to, I had to replace the air bleeder, the little plastic T connector and the hose that goes down under the intake feels really loose not sure if it disconnected but I also got p0171 and p0174 codes come up right after

The bleeder hose attaches underneath the intake manifold, to the throttle housing. These always feel a little loose since they're not clipped into any retainers but left to rest under the manifold. As for the p0171 and p0174 fault codes. These are trouble codes for a lean condition in banks 1 and 2. It is possible that something was loose and got disconnected while you were servicing the coolant tank, or it could also be a coincidence that these codes showed up at the same time.

Hi Bryan, chances are the codes are unrelated. We would suggest running a full diagnostic scan for fault codes with your Rover to see if there are some underlying fault codes appearing.

I had the same thing it says low coolant but when I scanned the car it said coolant thermostat reading below temps but would drive fine wouldn’t over heat from what it shows on the needle but driving the car for a while but what I notice is on a hot day is starts to go in protection mode/ limp mode limit gears available and says 3-4 shift code but i did a hard reset and change the coolant thermostat but still says the same thing low coolant. So now ima chance the over flow tank now and go from there I did check the itc already cleaned it but it looked good but I still cleaned it lol

Great video. I have a 2009 RR SUP (full size) and same problem as you describe in the beginning. Dealership is charging me $700 to replace the tank and flush the system out, pricey I thought. Is the replacement process the same as you would on the LR3's or RR Sport? Any help is greatly appreciate in advance!

You know just like I didn't know what to do, but I order the coolant tank $65.00 ,It was so much trouble to change it ,Not enough space, I even hear some comments to remove the headlamp, Omg this is such false info for fixing this, I removed my old tank and when I was installing the new one, I broke the little sensor that you unplugged, I went to ebay and bought another sensor for $12.00 this time I didn't even have to remove my tank I just took the two bolts out and lean it on the side ,plug the new $12.00 sensor in , And problem solved, These people is not even telling other people that you don't have to replace the tank ,Just the sensor, Omg, So screwed up.

I have a 2006 HSE Full Size and my bleeder screw BROKE, and as I drive it coolant just sprays everywhere. No heat and the engine overheats like crazy. Going to install a new tank and bleed it and hopefully get my heat back, because I live in Alberta and in January the temperatures get to -30 Celsius (22 degrees Farenheight). Any tips on this job (if you did it)? I have to do it outside in the cold...
