Fix .Docx files Are Not Showing Word Icon On Windows 10 or 11 PC

Fix .Docx files are not showing word icon but only white plain icon (Windows 10/11)
Step 1) Update Windows
Step 2) Step Try opening it with Word again
Step 3) Select Open with WordPad and then select Word again
Step 4) Reset Default Apps Settings
Step 5) For .docx and select word In Windows Settings
Step 6) Make changes in the Registry
Backup your Registry first
Go to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.docx
Create OpenWithList key
Inside it create WordPad.exe key
Right click on the .docx and create key named Word.Document.16
Inside that create ShellNew key
Select ShellNew key and make right click in the empty space, select String Value, Name the new string as NullFile
Now select .docx key and on the right side make sure that the data of the (Default) string is Word.Document.16 - To change it, double-click on the string named (Default), a window will open up and you change the data value to Word.Document.16
If the registry editor shows Word.Document.12 then make sure that the data of the (Default) string is Word.Document.16
Refresh it and open with word or restart your PC and try again.
Step 7) Repair Office

Step 5 rectified the issue on my PC thank for this tutorial other than getting it to work properly ..... I learnt a lot from viewing all the steps well done

Big thank you, none of the other directions I found worked. Step 6 (registry edit) followed by Step 3 (changing what app opens .docx back and forth) fixed the issue.

Thank you, this fixed the error after first editing the registry as you indicated and then changing "Open With" setting to Notepad and then back to Word. Bravo!

i already do reinstal ms office 2019, but my microsoft document file still white, ms word, excel and etc. already do this methods and repair the office but still, document file is fine still can open and move to another laptop. but why it blank white in my laptop😔

Hello, Thank you for your tutorial, it is brillinat. I have this issue in Office 16 running on Windows 10, and I think the registry fix you give might work for me. The only problem is that I doen't see an entry called 'Dox' in the registry drop down tree. When I click on HKEY_ClASSES_ROOT and scroll down, I come to folders called 'docx_auto_file, and below that, 'docxfile'. Inside 'docxfile' there are two other folders, one called 'defaultIcon' and a second called 'shell'. This is the only place where I could possibly make the changes you have discussed, but it could be the wrong location. Do you have any advice please, as no other tutorial I have viewed has a solution as promising as yours? Thanks again. 🙂
