Fix for the Missing Right Click New Microsoft Word Document Choice

If you are a serious Windows user, you should know how you can right click in a folder or on your desktop and choose the New menu option and then choose from one of the many choices from there.
One common issue that many Microsoft Office users have is that they are missing the New Microsoft Word Document choice from this menu and the typical methods that people try to fix the problem simply don't work.
This video goes over some registry changes you can make that will help to resolve the problem. There is no one simple fix so you need to make sure that all of the registry entries are there and typed correctly.

Thanks for the helpful video! Everything in my registry was fine, EXCEPT the Word.Document.12 string mentioned in the last minute of the video. As others have mentioned, I previously had OpenOffice and LibreOffice on my PC. This is probably where the problem originated.

Thank you. I lost the ability to create word files after installing open office. the option was changed to open offices own filetype. Then after uninstalling, the option was completely gone. The last thing you mentioned was the fix for me.

Right click your Word icon and choose Properties. Then click the Change Icon button. Then browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office oot\Office16 and find the WINWORD.exe file and double click it or choose Open. the Office 16 part of the path might be different for you depending on what version of Office you are running.

thank you. what helped was I changed the data value in the .docx (Default) key from Windows.Recipe to Word.Document.12. Sometimes all settingsfound in tge .docx\Word.Document.12\ShellNew are as described in the video and it still doesn't work, check the .docx\Default value data, it might be Windows.Recipe instead of Word.Docyment.12

Hmm it's strange, I don't have that ROOT folder in my Office folder, but all the files in the registry editor was fine, so I just used repair option from the Control Panel and after restarting the system the docx appeared under "New" 🤔

Thanks very much. One additional hint: the top-level registry entry for the file type .docx may also be the culprit: Situation and Solution: Recently OpenOffice (Version 4.1.14, March 2023) overwrote (in an updating install) the registry key setting for the top-level .docx entry (which you don't show in the video, as you never click directly on the .docx entry). On the toplevel of .dotx, there are 3 entries (the first (default), Content Type, and PreceivedType). OpenOffice changed only the first entry to OpenOffice.Docx (which breaks the context menu), it had to be corrected back to Word.Document.12 OS: Windows 10 Maybe that helps some folks.

In my case I don't have the path C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Root\VFS\Windows\ShellNew The root file is missing from the Microsoft Office folder. I downloaded a registry edit file and it solved it.

I don't use Office so the only thing that was missing in my right click menu was new text document.......You don't NEED to do any reg edits, all you have to do is - go to start menu, search for notepad, then right click on the notepad app, click "app settings" and then click Reset
