The pin with a groove on the one side is there because that style clamp is used to "clamp or separate". Reverse the head and reverse the rod and instead of the grip tightening it opens the mouth wider.

You can still turn the wooden bar the other way so it is still redundant.

I have the 6" versions of these and the plastic trigger broke from normal use. The plastic trigger has a nub which when pulled applies pressure on a metal follower plate. Just with normal use the nub wore down and now its useless. Same brand as the one in your video. Shit brand.
