No problem. They just require some time spent on them as the rubber is pretty sticky. But can be fixed! Do a video of how you get on.

After painting, you should try to cover these areas in Pledge Floor wax to give the paint protection and gloss.
@toypolloi7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't want to do that. You have no idea what that may do to the plastic over time.

My experience in merchandising, using a citrus based airfreshener or cleaner works wonders on sticky gunk like that.
@LextheRobot6 жыл бұрын
I remember using rubber bands as gun-belts on my own figures in the 70s. I even found some solid white rubber bands that looked better on Stormtroopers. (One Stormie had a loose left arm, too, so I also used a white rubber band around the bicep and down in the joint to tighten him up.) I hope none of mine are still stored with rubber bands like this!
@DarthIllusive18 жыл бұрын
Two chemicals I use for figures is Acetone for solid plastic parts with a Q-tip, works amazing. I stress, do not use Acetone on factory painted parts. The second is Goo Gone! Any sticky gunk is easily removed with this. I use this for decal removal. In Chemistry, we have a saying "like dissolves like" Nice work!
@toypolloi8 жыл бұрын
+DarthIllusive1 Acetone can really damage SW figures so I avoid that. We don't have goo gone in the UK as far as I know. Cheers
@ryanbarker52178 жыл бұрын
you probably have goo gone just under a different licensing name, lol. here you'd find it generally in the auto section of a store or an auto or handware store. it's citrus-based, so i would imagine any other citrus-based cleaner would work just as well. i tried cleaning an acrylic trophy with acetone to remove a mistake (the wife and i own a trophy shop), and it absolutely reeked havoc with the surface. sure, it make the surface crackly and kinda cool, but totally worthless. acetone ~ mean stuff!

Great video! Know of any good glossy acrylic paint I could use for the Death Star/Squad Commander's helmet, so it's all shiny or have a matte-like finish instead of a solid black? Could you do a challenge video of that at some point in the future? BTW, you forgot to paint his belt. ;)
@toypolloi9 жыл бұрын
I always use humbrol paints. They do gloss and matte finish. This figure was pretty matt so I went with that. I know about the belt. No silver in stock at the moment, and this video was more about the rubber gunk. But we'll spotted!
@jakejager4 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you've tried, since this video is so old, but Xylene works well for dissolving rubber. I use it to thin shoe goo and other rubber cements but have also melted a new rubber band (turned into a rubber cement kind of consistency) but not sure how it would effect the plastics of the 80's but wanted to toss the idea at you just in case you ever need to deal with rubber (or thin rubber cement) ;)
@brianartillery7 жыл бұрын
I've used WD-40 to remove perished rubber from things. A lot of what we call 'Rubber' nowadays is nothing of the sort, but synthetic plastic material which will bond to, deform, or destroy rigid plastics used in toy manufacture, like Polystyrene, Acrylic, Butyrate, etc., if stored next to such materials in close proximity.

Are restorations like this as controversial as repro weapons? I'm not a vintage collector but stumbled across your channel. I find these restorations fascinating.

Nice work, but I do need to point out that the newly painted bits are matte, while the rest of the figure is shiny, how would you fix that? (I want to do this with my collection but doing research first).

They sell packs of flossing harps in Wiko's, I think they are 89p and you get 100s in a pack. They would definitely be of help in this and other toy repair/restoration jobs.

Infact, as well as repairing, they can be easily modified in to convincing weapons (swords, guns etc) for using with star wars and similar sized figures.

What paint would you recommend for the Death squad Commander's helmet please Sir ??? The reason I ask is because the helmet has a different finish to the boots , gloves and belt . Part of me says do the belt gloss , but I think matt or satin is nearest

The oxy is only for ink stains. You could try hydrogen peroxide but it is more than likely it will damage the paint on the rest of the figure. Just live with the yellowing.

I couldn't say as I have never used that make. Maybe someone will know.
@jokerproduction51357 жыл бұрын
ty its the brand they sell here at walmart
@ethrieltd7 жыл бұрын
There are TWO types of acrylic paint. Apple Barrel will most likely be a "crafting" paint. These can work on figures but WILL need a clear coat to finish them or it will be susceptible to wearing. any moving parts will for sure wear such as leg or arm joints. I wouldn't advise using it myself. I'd advise Testors or Humbrol model acrylics.
