I have this problem all the time! I'm a 10.5 shoe size and they don't make steel toe work boots in half sizes. So I have the option of boots that are to tight and hurt my feet or boots that are too big and rub on my heels

Try the 10.5 with a thinner insole, try the 11 with a flat foamy insole or 2 underneath the existing insole. With the 11 you could also try lacing the bottom 4 eyelets firmly then tying a reef knot. Lace the rest normally. In the 11 you could add or get a cobbler to add a suede backlining with a layer of foam under it. Also some brands will be bigger or smaller in the sizes, worth trying other brands. Keep trying stuff you''l find a solution.

yea but sometimes you just have bad luck, where you're feet are simply not 'made' for certain shoes, which i also have with docs. i've tried these things and my heel still kinda slips out.

I love your post and I have decided to follow you and introduce you to my friends and relatives . Hope you will post a solution for the prevention of the leather cracking where the boot is bending in three points : two points where the foot is bent while walking and one in the back of the boot where the pivot of the foot and leg exist .. Most of the leather boots are cracked in three zones even before they pass their warranty period.

Generally dry leather cracks. While oiled leather does not. The process of making leather into shoes can dry out the leather. Then we get them wet then dry as we wear them and this further drys them out. What I do 1. Where appropriate with new shoes I coat them with leather oil inside and out on day one. This works well with dark coloured unlined shoes. Day two I coat them with a wax based polish and try to get some shine back. 2. Wear each pair of shoes only one day in a row. 3. Put wooden shoe trees in them when I'm not wearing them. Hope this helps, and you don't have to go this far especially on lighter colours as the oil may stuff up the colour. For example you could use Leather Balm instead of oil, waxy polish on top then plastic shoe or boot trees. Make the most of your shoes, don't save them for best! Go live life to the max, you can get another pair ... but your time here is limited. Shane PS cheers for the video idea

You can also test heel grips under the tongue and inside the front of the shoe in areas that feel loose.

Heel grips are best for dress shoes. Ideally onto a firm leather surface. Not so good on flexible textile like sneakers. On sneakers it's better to customer fit a piece of suede and stitch it at the top and run it down onto the bottom of the shoe inside. This really keeps them in place. Toe cushion/pads for sneakers suit some people. I like to try the simple cheap method first.

Hi Alex, that's not a question for me ... I'm a shoe repairer. If it's loose and you slip around in it, it's more likely you'll have an issue. 8 and 8.5 is very close so consider lacing a little tighter, adding an insole under or on top of the existing.

Go back and ask at the shop. Try on the next size. The Nappa ones will stretch more than the hard leather ones.

I don't have a good answer for that. You could try 1. Use Heel Grips or Inserts: These are adhesive pads that you stick inside the back of your shoe. They can fill extra space, making the shoe fit more snugly and reducing gapping. 2. Tongue Pads: These are pads that you stick under the tongue of the shoe. They push your foot back into the heel, which can help with gaping at the sides.

Plastic heel stiffener needs heating then held in correct shape as it cools, consider using steam. As heat gun will damage mesh and manmade sneaker fabric. Heres steam been used for stretching. Take care it is burny on skin!

Not sure if you are meaning you removed the insole or the heel block? Heel block can be shortened. Thinner insole can be used.

Depends on brand of heel grip, material the shoe is made of and the skill of the installer. A decent brand onto leather lining that has been sanded and then applied without repositioning and well press. Will last years. If it's onto fabric or shiny vinyl they may last a few weeks. If in doubt get them stitched in.

Hi Ross, it's likely still best to pay the money and get shoes made for your wife. Would be worth shopping around shoe makers to see how much price varies. Also depending on your country there maybe insurance or discount schemes available though health care providers. One other thing, there may exist a situation where it is cheaper to buy 2 pairs of shoes, one in each size. You may then need to get the heel height altered to ensure that your wife is on the level. I wear shoes until they hit absolute failure, so I always get the smallest size possible and let it break in shoes will always (unless steel toe) get loser width wise with wear. Never ever length wise

Great question @DenRoedeMogM, and I think it's happened to most people at some point in their life. I even bought Crocs a size too big ... they were good with thick socks! But wifey not to keen on crocs to start with ... let alone with socks. Buying in winter for summer can lead to buying a size to small. Same as buying first thing in the morning. Or buying online.
