Fix Media Offline issue in Davinci Resolve 18, 17 (or 16) (NOT BY RE-LINKING)

This is a quick 30 second fix for most "MEDIA OFFLINE" issues you see in Davinci Resolve. Now, if you have actually moved or changed the location of your files, this clearly will not work. This is just to fix the random 'MEDIA OFFLINE" issue you get while working in a timeline.

OK so mine did not work but I figured it out. It is a storage issue. Check to see if your computer has space. If it does not delete somethings off the computer or hard drive and it will fix itself. I cried for 3 hours before thinking about checking it. And it WORKED for me.

Thank you so much, your advice saved my project! I'm new to Resolve and after manually deleting the files in the "Cache Clip" folder (that were eating up 300 GB of my SSD storage) I thought I was out of luck but duplicating the timeline and decomposing in place worked like a charm. Glad I found out about this early on before moving on to more sizeable projects. I guess it's time to do some research into how Resolve handles cache and manages files now haha. Cheers!

still no luck here . . . I tried to load some xml file exported from premiere (because I prefer to color grade into davinci) but all the media seems to be off line. Everything was working fine created a compound clip and then color graded in DaVinci Resolve 18 then one of my other Clips stopped working and so I went to fix it and I realized I just had the layer hidden and when I undid that the compound clip I was working on previously send media offline and when I do a search through my media it says 480 Clips not found maybe DaVinci Resolve can't handle 700 hours video footage I don't know it seems to work just fine normally but in any case it doesn't recognize this compound clip or any of my other Clips except for the other Clips still play this clip says it's offline and it doesn't seem like there's any way to search anymore because when I do a search it just gives me a spinning wheel and then just goes to normal screen as if it's gone through the search but it has not doesn't even tell me if it's found all of them I'm running a decent system but I guess it's having trouble plenty of RAM and everything not slowing down just having issues with the footage being found

I am brand new to Davinci Resolve and I experienced this issue early on with minimal time invested in this software, so it is a total pre-emptive victory! I could see where this would be a re-occurring problem, and other videos I looked at did not "resolve" the problem. This is a great fix. btw - you have a good screen presence, facial expressions, voice tempo, you may want to look into acting, just saying!. thanks again!

When that happens, you right click on each clip and select the re-link option, then navigate to the place where the video is stored. I have it happen often enough that it's sometimes mind-blowing how great this software is with this obvious flaw. If re-linking doesn't with, try dropping then into a new project and see if they show there. Sometimes it's easier to just start fresh if you're project gets off on the wrong foot

i just had a similar issue where i did not copy my files off onto the hard drive and just started editing from my card. to fix, i ended up just copying them to the hd and then re-linking them by right clicking on the clip and click 'relink media' and then selecting the files manually. for some reason, it refused to see my files on my card after the 'media offline' problem happened. let me know if that helps

are you in the timeline view and not the cut page? you have to highlight the clip and right click on the video portion of the click and 'decompose in place" Also, if you have any speed changes in the clip, you need to remove them or you lose the 'decompose in place' command. you can right click on the compound clip and "remove attributes,' then you will be able to 'decompose in place' but be careful if you have a lot of edits that may be undone. I just learned this trick a few hours ago.

Is your clip just a fusion clip or an effect? That's about the only reason i could think of unless there is an older or newer version without that button

Didnt work for me. But here its probably an issue of transfering an mp4 with more then 1 audio attached. When i convert it with osb it works fine. But that takes up a lot of time unfortunatly.

it seems to be a generalized problem and not related to free vs paid since i've had the same issue on both. For me, ti seems to be if i render something and switch too quickly or do something weird. re-linking the files generally fix 99% of my problems, though, and this is the way i end up doing it if all else fails. I've also realized this generally fixes problems that re-linking also fixes. It's just weird overall.

The decompose in place is just something that would be there if you've made changes to the clips before you created the new timeline. If you aren't going to make any changes, then you should be fine... If you are, you have to kind of treat it like a compound clip. The new beta 4 has a few more bugs than beta 3 so I'm hoping they get them worked out quickly

is "optical flow' enabled? if so, then you may need to copy the timeline to a new one with optical flow on or off. it has to render the extra frames and sometimes it seems to hang up on that part of changing the framerate. Drives me insane

my standard troubleshooting: 1. actually try re-linking the clips in question, 2, this method of creating a new timeline and copying everything over, 3. checking to make sure i have plenty of hard drive space as mentioned in the pinned comment. After that, i would start a new project and then copy this project over into that one. last resort is to export the project and then import as a new project. It's a weird issue that seems to have a lot of causes/fixes/unresolved problems. Good luck

I tried what you said and created a new timeline using selected clips but when I right clicked the timeline, it doesn't give the option to decompose in place. I selected the clip and then hit the drop down menu where the decompose in place option was listed and I was not able to select it.

@@missakasha2736 Ok, i typically either right click on the clip on the timeline video in the timeline on the edit page and get 'decompose in place' or i right click on the clip in the media pool and get 'decompose in place" if that does not appear for you, this is my last ditch workaround: click davinci resolve menu up by file in upper left corner on PC, then click "keyboard customizations" then search for 'decompose in place" and then click the keystroke area if there is not one assigned. there probably is not. I assigned mine to my numpad decimal point. click save, give it a random name, then close and go back to your edit page. Click the timeline video in the timeline and press your new hotkey for 'decompose in place" and it should split back up to the way it was. i don't know why some people are not getting the decompose in place option but that's my workaround now.
