Woks great on filters, then once you're convinced you can try it on the lens but it can leave a residue line where the tape ends. clear cellophane works best for me so far.

It leaves glue residue which will give dirt a place to stick and possibly eat away the coating. I'm not with you on this one.
@FixOldCameras

Use standard office grade transparent tape or a strip of light duty clear packing tape and you will have no worries. Super-hold transparent tape or duct tape or some other super sticky tape might leave a residue, but way bother finding out when the standard tape works as well as it does for the demonstrated purpose.

It's not adhering to the lens, it's adhering to the surface grime. There's a distinction between doing this to a clean lens, and doing this to an extremely oily and dusty lens. The point of this technique is not to spot clean an already clean lens. There is no residue.

Even in cases with stuff that won't come off with a bit of tape (like lens mold), this is a great trick to use as a final pass after you've used isopropyl alcohol etc., to get rid of those last tiny bits of dust and lint that just don't want to leave when you blast them an air blower.
@davegnarlsson4344
@davegnarlsson4344 3 жыл бұрын
No, it isn't. You are leaving glue residue on your lens.
@buzhichun
@buzhichun 3 жыл бұрын
@@davegnarlsson4344 Not in my experience. When cleaning I tend to study the lens surface very carefully. Also if this "glue residue" is somehow imperceptible, you'd expect it to pick up dust and lint (like from a cotton swab). I haven't noticed anything like that. If you're that concerned about residue, just use something with weaker adhesive, like a post-it.
@davegnarlsson4344
@davegnarlsson4344 3 жыл бұрын
@@buzhichun You're not thinking it through. When you re-apply an alcohol swab to the lens you are dissolving the residue left from previous actions. Alcohol dissolves glue. That doesn't make it okay to put glue on lens coating to start with.

@@davegnarlsson4344 I'm 99% certain that is not the case for this application, and you're just being a contrarian. The adhesive does not adhere to the lens, it adheres to the surface grime which subsequently is removed. This action is known to function exactly as such due to it's extensive study in use by Special Investigations units in fingerprint recovery; they even use rubberized tape similar to gorilla tape, but much weaker, to remove a fingerprint from a texturized surface.

I have a problem with my Asahi Pentax k1000; After I take a photo the mirror stays locked up, when I open the bottom plate the rod wasn’t let down to release the mirror. Is there a way I can fix this so I don’t have to open the bottom every time to release it?

I have not been very successful in soldering wires inside camera bodies. Mostly battery compartment connection. Using cheap iron from Amazon, flux core solder with additional flux. Cleaning everything well. Solder just not sticking. Any advice?
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 3 жыл бұрын
The battery wire strands and the battery contacts are often compromised by residual corrosion. Pre-tin new stranded wire and burnish the contact where you want to attach the wire. You might want to practice with a new brass or copper connection and new wire. Flux and tin both the wire and contact connection. Extra hands type clip stands are helpful in maintaining the joint while the solder cools. www.amazon.com/shop/fixoldcameras Please make note that the links provided are affiliate links and a small commission is received by the creator of this channel if you make a purchase using these links. When it comes to Soldering issues, the biggest culprit that makes it difficult and causes people to want to pull their hair out with frusteration at why its not working properly is that they use cheap equipment and more importantly cheap solder. if you want succesfull soldering every time, you NEED to open up the wallet and buy high quality solder and also a medium/high quality iron.
@danc2014
@danc2014 Ай бұрын
Solder only sticks to clean metal / copper. A corrode wire often has a residue on it even under the insulation. Flux helps but extra cleaning may also be needed.

@@MaxBuchheit He did say "light duty". If you use a light adhesion tape, this is a perfectly acceptable and widely used trick in the camera repair shops. of course you would not want to use a heavy duty tape with aggresive adhesives.
