Thank You for guiding me through replacing the light seals on my 4-backs and the rotating back on my RB67 Pro S. The cost to have the back's repaired at a repair shop is $150. This repair is time-consuming so you need to be patient. I found out using a Q-tip to deactivate adhesive strips works much easier for me. I over saturated using this repair technique to deactivate adhesive strips and was working with a spaghetti noodle. You can get this light seal foam on Amazon.

Good to hear that your persistence paid off. That is a funny, but perfect description of an overly saturated light seal. Thank you for the comments.

Seal material is also available from eBay seller "millyscameras" in UK. I recommend you avoid pre-cut seal kits sold for specific camera models: Much cheaper and practical to cut your own from bulk material as shown in this video. Plus, when you mess one up, you'll have plenty of material to try again.

Hi Fix old Cameras! :) Firstly, thanks for all the great tutorials! I have an Olympus Om2n - the shutter is inconsistent once every 4-6 shots. Even at 1000th of a second it sometimes stays open for a second. Any idea of how I can fix this? Thought it might be a faulty capacitor, but then surely it would just not work at all? Any advice would be so appreciated! Thanks a mill!! :)

Thankful to have found this video! I just received my rb67 and saw that the most difficult part (at least for me) is replacing the light seals on the shutter mirror. The foam is deteriorating, any tips on how to cleanly and carrfully remove it? Also, what are some tips to clean the shutter mirror. Thank you again!
@FixOldCameras

Just be patient as you work it out with a scraper, you want to avoid scratching the paint. Have a sturdy paper towel handy to keep the tip of you scraper clean of the foam as you remove it.

Hey ! Firstly thx for the great content ! :D I've found 1.5 and 2mm light seal foam but can't find medium/light density light seal, is it really important that they have the specific density ? (I'm not planning on changing the foam near the mirror because i'm scared ^^ and the light leaks on the pics suggests that its not coming from there anyway !)

I got one of these, RB67 Professional, and it seemed to have nearly all of the foam seals completely cleaned out but not replaced. Any idea why someone would do that and if it’s possible to shoot film like that?

Does it really mind if I only use 2mm thick foam instead of 1.5 and 2? The thing is I already have a sheet of 2mm foam and I don't want to spend much money 😅
@matejkyjovsky4991
@matejkyjovsky4991 3 жыл бұрын
I wanted to ask if it is okay to use both thicknesses in high-density seals. I have ordered both 2mm and 1,5mm however they seem to be both rather high in density. I have noticed upon arrival and now installing them. Film back seems to be okay with it however I am not sure about the mirror. Do you think it would somehow affect the operation if the foam won't be able to squeeze as much as a medium dense one would? Thank you! Great vid!

If the shutter release and frames as it should than you are OK with the installation.

You use the alcohol to deactivate the glue on the light seal foam, right? Now, I've read somewhere that one of the ways to deactivate the glue is to use your own saliva (lick the adhesive part) or water. I believe that that is better than to use alcohol to deactivate the adhesive, because the alcohol is used to dissolve the the old glue residue and could possibly ruin your foam seals even in small/little quantity. What are your thoughts or anyone else's to use real linnen or wool thread to replace the light seal foam in the doors? For example my old Agfa Synchro Box has its original light seals which are probably linnen thread. would the linnen thread seal just as enough as the foam cut outs?
@FixOldCameras
@FixOldCameras 6 жыл бұрын
If the light seal foam is of a good quality it will not be damaged by the alcohol. It evaporates completely and fairly quickly leaving the adhesive completely intact. Spit probably does not deactivate the adhesive, but coats it and by nature evaporate slower. Neither property should cause any harm to the seal if that is the technique you are comfortable with. Properly sized and textured yarn or thread should be a good substitute and in some cases maybe a superior choice.
