I was told when I was very young that bad grounds are the most common source of electrical problems in vehicles. This week I will be 78, and this is more true today than it has ever been, especially since the number of "features" that rely on the electrical system has grown astronomically since I was a young man.

I thought it was a GEM module issue these truck like mine have bad seam at the cowl area, over time the sealant hardens and allows rain water to get inside and leak right on the GEM module and causes all kinds of gremlins. That was probably the best diagnosis I've seen since I was taught. Mind you I was just a kid back then and am no longer a mechanic (retired after 30+ years in the industry). It was just a beautiful thing to watch someone at work within their element. That might sound strange to some folks. But I honestly don't think I "worked" a day I was able to work on a vehicle. Yeah, I like/liked it THAT much. Now I just do odd jobs and help my kids out when they need it (and they're willing to come to the house. LOL). Anyway, OUTSTANDING bit of work Sir!!!

OUTSTANDING! Am definitely looking forward to it. I found your channel today. Specifically for this vid. I'm working on a 1997 F-150 4.6L 4x4 vin 6. Four wheel drive isn't working. I'm pulling my hair out because I can't find the problem. I've checked out all the vacuum, completely. I pulled the shift motor and manually put it into 4 high. So it could be driven here to the house. It was stuck in 4 low. But I really didn't check the motor yet. I didn't when I pulled it because of it being pretty late at night and because of where it was (in the middle of NOWHERE!). One would think automotive would be easier the more one does it. Which is true, to a point. Plus it's been a while since I turned wrenches for a living. After proof reading this I'm just making excuses for my shortcomings. Anywho, looking forward to the next one. Thank You Sir for your time and efforts. It's definitely appreciated. Not only for the technical aspects. But also your professionalism, attention to detail, and as I stated before, it's always enjoyable watching someone in their element.

However - just checking to verify a problem does not exist , your research on the forums and the operational parameters of THIS year , make and model GEM module is time invested - wether a problem is there or not . Since you are working remotely you have to wait till the module goes to sleep . It's not like you can jump on another vehicle . I hope you are compensated for your time and experience . On the four-wheel drive Ford had a problem where the two solenoids that mount on the firewall on the passenger side that control the vacuum for the chamber that pulls in the four-wheel drive would pull moisture in through the vents. In my 98 it went as far as got all the way down into the vacuum chamber that engages the gear in the front axle. Ford later solve this by putting a plastic Shield over top of them sort of like a small roof to deflect the rain water coming in under the hood. I had to replace the solenoids remove the vacuum chamber and drain the water out of it. Just a thought

I know,it seems that the Fords are very particular about having good grounds, etc to run properly as even my great uncles adopted daughters Ford EL Falcon conked out just once with a replacement ECU fitted so I went right through the battery terminals & the wires connecting onto the battery terminals including the main fusible link cable & I soldered the factory crimped connectors to give the ECU a good connection to the battery & the charging system,it hasn't stalled since, note it conked out all the time with the old ECU. As far as parasitic draw goes, my Holden VY SS Commodore runs things such as the radio clock,the LCD odometer & the security system LEDs on the radio & on the instrument cluster. The interior illumination such as the interior light,the illumination for the knobs, etc & the backlight for the display on the radio turns off after the car has been locked 🔒 by the transponder unit in the ignition key & the security system is then switched on by the BCM. I did have a seat height adjuster switch get clogged up with dust which caused a contact to partially stick on which was running the battery low all of the time so I just pulled the switch apart , cleaned it out & reassembled it which stopped the parasitic draw on the battery. Note that I have never had such bad ground problems with a Holden as I have done with a Ford - I don't know why!

At 1:13, if you connected the charger and got 15.85V, your charger is malfunctioning. 14.2V is acceptable, but that is an electronic regulated charger, it should not get that high, possible vehicle electronics damage. The fact that the battery voltage "jumped" literally leapt to 15.84V indicates that the battery is possibly damaged, that jump indicates a very high battery series resistance. Just my view...

When testing fuses while doing a parasitic draw test, you put meter on volts and go from the top 2 sides?

Is a good idea to disconnect fuses when I do a parasitic drain? some people say that one can cause ECUs to wake up when disconnecting fuses. Thus making it hard to find the drain.

Well done Ivan. Thanks!

How did you know even before you test that the problem was a bad ground?
@HouseCallAutoRepair3 жыл бұрын
Almost anytime there are multiple failures, that share a ground... that's the target! (VERY common in the salt belt)
