Many thanks. My '72 Mustang's clock stopped about 5 years ago, and now that I somewhat understand how it works, I'll see if I can get it going again.

I want to thank you for the rca jack tip. I had tried solder. Like you, it only lasted a few days. I have a beautiful console mounted clock in my 67 charger. It has been running strong for well over a month. Thanks again.

Great video, I have a 68 lincoln clock, took it apart, repaired the contacts and the clock came back to life, definitely better to keep it a stock than make it Quartz, the second hand is smooth, thanks for the help. Jason from New York

1964 Ford Galaxie: I pulled the clock from dash. The movement when I open contacts runs the second hand as spring closes contacts...contacts do not open when powered by 12 volt charger....contacts are pitted so I filed them down flat and made new copper contacts which I soldered to contacts.....opened contacts and attached power to clock, when contacts closed they stayed closed and burnt out the thin wire to the coil....any advice as to why this is happening?...thanks.

I had tried take the clock apart initially by taking of the nut and blade, but mine has a brass sleeve surrounded by a rubber grommet and neither of them budge. I can only guess mine is somewhat different, best leave well enough alone I suppose while I still have a clock to put back in the instrument panel lol. Again thanks for trying Michael.

Hi Im working on a 1974 dodge challenger rallye clock. I am doing the burned out points repair you've detailed. My points reset doesn't travel very far. every 30 seconds or so the clock points fire and reset. I can manually push it back much farther. is this normal or should it reset after a longer period of time. Any insight appreciated. Thx.

@garymosterd45269 жыл бұрын
Do appreciate you getting back to me Michael. Yes I have browsed the Chevelle site and have even posted with no success. The housing in the first part of your video showing three notches is very similar to mine. My question is, do I push up firmly on the steel tabs seated in these notches to free up the clock from the housing or is there a different way. I've been a little leery of trying that not wanting to do any damage that can't be fixed. If that's the case will the clock/tabs snap firmly back into the notches later on. Hopefully I'm on the right track, thanks.

Gary Mosterd IF I AM READING YOU CORRECTLY… There is just one nut on the back of the clock that needs to come off. It’s the same nut that holds the positive electrical blade (where you plug the clock in). When you undo that nut, the clock should just easily slide out of the little metal housing. The “tabs” you mentioned are really just for proper alignment of the clock into the housing. Don’t bend them, or try to force anything.

Gary Mosterd did you have any success with this? I have an El Camino clock thatI want to fix, otherwise I'll have to convert it to quartz.

oops I spoke to soon went out the next day, clock had stoped saw burnt place on the top points that was the orginal one I had filed it clean , but they stuck an burned out again, guess i'l go with quartz clock now , was really hard tryin cuts perfectly square the points like u said it really impotant , but the 2 amp fuse should burn before frying the clock ?
@steelcantuna8 жыл бұрын
+Dale Ratliff I don't have first hand experience with the fuse. That's what other people on the net told me to do & said it what was they have done. If you get a quartz conversion, I'd be more than happy to take your old "guts" & try to get it working for my car. My clock has finally worn out completely (long story) not the points though. Don't just throw your "guts" away: Powell 9923 Knoll Krest Dallas, TX 75238 :)

how's it running ,,, it's not hooked up??
@gav240z6 жыл бұрын
Was wondering same thing, unless it was stored potential energy?
@RapperBC6 жыл бұрын
It's running literally on a clockwork mechanism. It's running on energy stored in its spring. When the spring winds all the way down, the two contacts (points) close, sending12 volts to the winding mechanism, which winds the spring electrically, but only briefly. Thus the spring is wound up again, and proceeds to gradually run down until the contacts close again, winding the spring once more. In this way, engineers were able to use very little electricity to power automotive clocks.

How do you remove the hands from the clock? I have a 67 Impala and can't remove the hands
@steelcantuna4 жыл бұрын
Ever so gently from the center of the clock. They are just pressed on to 2 or 3 shafts, as best I remember, 1 for the second hand, 1 for the minute hand & 1 for the hour. Be VERY patient while gently removing & reinstalling. I just use my fingers under the center point of the shaft, not a metal tool.

Can you explain how to get the clock out of the housing. Really anxious to give this a try on 69 Chevelle clock......."thanks.
@steelcantuna9 жыл бұрын
Gary Mosterd I am not familiar with the interior of a Chevelle or the housing that holds the clock. If you go to “Team Chevelle” on the internet there is a wealth of information. Do a search for “clock removal” or something similar. Here is an example: www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50745

I have a Borg clock like yours. The points look ok after I filed them down. When it's hooked up to the charger and the points close, nothing happens. Could it be the winding? If so, any clue how to fix? Thx.
@steelcantuna11 жыл бұрын
I would check the gap or "strength" of the points where they make contact. I have experienced something similar & had to GENTLY bend the arm of the top side of the points so when the spring loaded side came up they would make better contact. Also, make sure the points are very, very clean at the flat contact spots. It doesn't take much to keep them from NOT sparking open so then the spring will slowly try to pull them shut.
