FIX: Re-Attach Loose Siding

The siding panels are interlocked at their top lock and bottom buttlock. Each panel overlaps the panel below it and locks into place along the buttlock joint.
We will use this zip tool, it is little more than a metal bar with a small hook at one end and a bend at just the right angle. It allows you to get under the top and bottom edges of the siding pieces where the pieces interlock.

This reminds me of how my grandparents met, they were both installing siding for the same company. They died one week apart last year. They often talked about siding.

Thanks! Just went out back after the latest storm and found several panels disloged and damaged. Didn't realize it was that easy to replace. Just one problem...finding siding that color matches 25 year old siding that spends most of the day in the sun.

If you’re able to take a piece of it from close to where the missing bit is, A lot of places have an electronic colour matching system for paint. You can get a small can of paint to match the colour of the replacement piece. Exactly. Costs very little. I think the cost of the smallest sample tin is five dollars.

If your siding looks like that it's because they didn't lock it in right the first time. Take it all down and do it over. Once you raise one up to lock it in it's a domino effect

i’m wondering how a person could safely do this in cold weather. I noticed a couple of pieces of blue siding lately, and it’s already quite cold out, so I’m wondering if there’s a neck that I need to Learn so that I don’t crack the vinyl when I flex it with the tool.

Vinyl is brittle when cold. Use a test piece to see how far you can push it.

Once you got it into place, can you nails or screws to secure?

you don't really need to. If you really want to, nails would be better.

WTF did I just watch!!! That’s not even close. That tool is for vinyl siding, aluminum siding doesn’t flex like vinyl and that’s why you cut away from the camera on the starter strip. You will never get it to lock back onto the starter unless you take the entire wall down and start from bottom up. 😂😂

do you really need a tool for that, couldn't you use the back end of a hammer?

You can use a paint can opener. Lots of videos on what I mean if you arent sure.
