Same here. We’ve had vinyl siding on our house over 40 years now. Every year when I pressure wash, I find a loose piece. It easier for me just to tack it down with a long paneling nail than to take it down and reinstall it.

Thanks for your video, I've done most every trade but for some reason I have never worked with vinyl. We had a bad storm with high winds and took some siding off my daughter's house and she called a company to repair it and this is what they did, what your are repairing in your video and was sagging loose and the new vinyl mixed with the older faded vinyl looks terrible, they should have replaced the whole side. It's like using new paint on an old painted wall where the paint doesn't exactly match and someone has taken a roller and rolled strips of of paint here and there from top to bottom. Thanks again!
@sidingschool
@sidingschool Ай бұрын
No problem! Mixing new and old vinyl is a tricky thing. I think you are right - that they should’ve done the whole side… insurance probably would’ve paid for it. There are products that are supposed to bring vinyl back to its former glory. I think “vinyl restore” is what it is called. It might blend the old stuff in with the new. But you never know, it could make it worse. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Over 50% of the homes in my neighborhood have loose siding hanging. Lousy and lazy installers is the real reason. Wanted to do it myself but was time constraint Ed so hire it done. I inspected mine each day and made them redo part of my house. Still had to redo some myself later.
@sidingschool

Sorry you had to deal with that! I’ve definitely seen some shoddy work done. It was very hard for me to scale my business because quite a few guys didn’t last a day. Eventually gave up trying to scale… it is less headache and things get done properly if I just do it all myself.

Just got a call where a homeowner sided his addition himself w triple 5 cedar impressions and had several unlocked panels.i said i could strip the wall down to the lowest unlocked panel for a 1000$ or he could just face nail them himself.he chose the latter 😂😂

They used to be even worse because they had about 8 tiny little clips to clip in and every once in a while you’d miss one somehow (no matter how careful you were). Sometimes I’d sneak a knife up in there and just cut it off… it looked fine and still worked perfectly well. And sometimes I’d take the wall down to that point!

I was wondering what your take would be on using outdoor silicone where the pieces clip. Would it help to hold everything, especially during hurricane season?
@sidingschool
@sidingschool 7 ай бұрын
I might try that as a last resort. I’m pretty sure any warranty would be voided. Some people will do that with the top of the wall pieces. But I’m not sure how well it holds up with expansion and contraction.

Another detail to remember is that you also want to be sure to hit the wall studs behind the sheathing when fastening the siding and not just nail into the 1/2 "to 3/4" sheathing....
@sidingschool
@sidingschool 2 ай бұрын
It is recommended to nail into studs.
@steved8563
@steved8563 2 ай бұрын
@@sidingschool yes but in watching you reinstall the siding I noticed you were just nailing through the sheathing and not making sure you the studs behind the sheathing or making mention of that. It's also good to point out to people that most vinyl siding makers have stud location markers on their siding spaced every 16" to assist in hitting the wall framing once the first wall stud is located. To be honest I would have just stripped that down from the top and reinstalled the siding from the area that was off up again instead of spending all that time removing those couple of courses and trimming or reworking all etc.. That wall area had no obstacles and was low enough to the ground that stripping it down would have been easy and less involved. You had pouring rain coming down so I know you weren't messing around when it came time to reinstall etc.. Just wanted to add that hitting studs is the best practice so that the nails stay put moreso than if they are just nailed through the sheathing ....
@sidingschool
@sidingschool 2 ай бұрын
Stripping the siding down from the top would ensure all the pieces are fully locked in and would be a good practice. I chose to do an easier demonstration - not everyone will be able to get to the top of their wall. Another thing with stripping down from the top and reinstalling is that the siding may not line up around outside or inside corners or at the top of the wall as well as it did anymore (because typically all the siding on a house is installed in the same manner). As far as nailing to the studs… in my area of the country we don’t have high winds and all the siding contractors only nail to the plywood around here. I never even heard of a contractor that nails to studs. Now if I lived in a windy part of the country I might be screwing the siding to studs (as another person said they do). Fastening requirements vary from local to local and it is a good idea to verify what your specific manufacturer and local code requirements are.

Here’s an affiliate link to the tool I used: Malco siding removal zip tool amzn.to/3COkLrw If you don’t want to buy it from Amazon you can probably find a siding zip tool at your local lumber yard or big box lumber store like Home Depot, Lowe’s etc.

@sidingschool
@sidingschool 3 ай бұрын
Hmm… I would try the patch and paint method probably. Here’s a patch kit on Amazon amzn.to/3PHpEJD. You’ll also have to go to a paint store and get the paint matched to the vinyl siding. There’s also this product amzn.to/3PL3oOV which is supposed to restore vinyl, but I can’t vouch for it because I haven’t used it yet. Finally if you are looking to match your current vinyl siding, I would recommend finding a local siding contractor for the best options. I give some tips on identifying and acquiring your siding in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3alk3iqeceGpsksi=HMPvfWM6sOon0FYp Good luck!

How can I replace a damaged Vinyl outside corner without removing the siding on both walls? Is There A Trick? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thank You in Advance!
@sidingschool
@sidingschool Ай бұрын
Hi James, I actually recorded a video on how to replace a corner by loosening the siding that goes into it. I have not edited it yet, but can get that posted in the next few days if you’re interested. Alternatively I’ve seen a few videos on KZbin where they just cut the corner and leave the existing corner’s j-pocket in place and then they use the old J to hook a new corner on. I chose not to do that method for a few reasons, but it is a viable option. I can post a link here if you want the cut and cap option.

Put screw in it And countersink siding coer with clear silicone will come out showing white
@sidingschool
@sidingschool Ай бұрын
You could possibly put one screw in the face of vinyl siding, but it would be exposed. Also it isn’t really feasible to countersink a screw into vinyl siding because it is only .042” thick and doesn’t have the dimensional thickness to allow for that, unlike wood or fiber cement siding which is generally 1/4”-5/16” thick - a screw into vinyl siding would go all the way through it. Any more than one screw into vinyl siding will guarantee that it will “oil can”. Vinyl siding has to be able to expand and contract freely with the changes in the temperature. Thanks for your comment!

@sidingschool
@sidingschool Ай бұрын
That’s a great way to do it too! There is couple things about that method - the first one is that the siding is consistently losing height on the whole house and changing that on one wall will make it so that the layout doesn’t line up around the corners anymore and the rip size (or reveal size) at the top of the wall would be considerably smaller than the other walls. Another thing is that not everyone can access the top of their wall. For those reasons and to demonstrate an easier repair, I chose this method. Thanks for sharing!

@@sidingschool I'm a grumpy old fart that thinks the extra money is worth it! 😁 It's not that vinyl looks 'bad' to me, but it just screams 'vinyl!', and there's a heck of a lot of it around, mostly in that creamy off-white it seems. I dunno, I think maybe because it's all rounded with no sharp edges, it looks half melted or something. 🤷‍♂
