Thanks for this video, I'm going to look for that Vandoren Reed Resurfacer, it looks like a handy tool to have.

It is really handy to improve your sound simply by moving the reed.

Easiest way to get a really flat piece of glass (not always the case with picture frames) is to use a mirror. These have to be made with ground glass - so that the image is not distorted - and the glass is polished between two grinding wheels to give it a dead flat surface. Re. grinding with a 'figure of eight movement' - Michelle is correct; this makes it far less likely that the reed will end up with a curved surface after sanding.

Michelle, any argument against doing the mouthpiece suction test to determine whether the back is warped, as opposed to the potential unreliability of the rocking/visual technique you outline?

Michelle, everything I want to know about my clarinet it seems you have the answer - I have a few good quality reeds that are now too hard to play. The Vandoren Reed Adjuster is really expensive to source here, so I'll make my own as you suggest. You mentioned 400 grit sandpaper. Is that the finer of the two? Would you advise adding the coarser one too? And if so what grit for that - 320 maybe? Thanks a mil. Clare

Clare Laurence Generally finer is better, - you just need to sand more if the reed is really warped. Most homemade versions only use one grade of paper.

Clarinet Mentors (Michelle Anderson) Thanks Michelle. I made it today and it only took 10 minutes. I stuck the sandpaper onto picture glass with double sided tape. My new Vandoren 21 reed was really stiff, more like a 3 than a 2.5 and It's much easier to play now after a couple of minutes sand. I know this video is 3 years old so I wonder if you've used the new Vandoren Glass Reed Resurfacer RR200 which has a rough glass surface instead of sandpaper, and a glass wand (whatever that does!) and if so, what you think. As I said, it's expensive but I might consider it at some point.

Hi Clare, Many of my students have the glass Vandoren resurfacer, and really like it. The wand lets you scrape small surface areas of the reed if you are adjusting the tip. I haven't tried the new one simply because my years' old one still works great. I think the new ones work very well by all accounts, and have the advantage of not leaving any sandpaper residue on the reed.

This explains why my size 4 reeds make me sound fuzzy.Have you tried Rico Reserve Classic Reeds?I find they give a more mellow and clearer sounds compared to Vandorean Traditional.

+clarinetfanatic09 The Rico Reserve are very good reeds. They don't work as well on my setup, but I do know professional players who use them and love them. Every mouthpiece (and mouth probably) works a bit differently. I'm glad they work well for you. I do recommend them to people.

Not able to get audio and these two videos. Does this have something to do wth the fact they are older postings?
@ClarinetMentors8 жыл бұрын
+Carl Radimer Hi Carl. Yes - my first videos for some reason have virtually no sound on some computers (usually Windows). I will be re-recording them in the near future.

When I blow in my clarinet without closing any holes, I get a E as on my piano, not a G. What does it mean?!
@gayatrid21204 жыл бұрын
The clarinet is a B flat Instrument not a regular C instrument as many instruments such as a Piano, Flute or a Violin. So the G on a clarinet will be different from a G on a piano or a Violin.
