Fix the 01 Error Code on Your Whirlpool Refrigerator

Ever see a 01 Error Code on your Whirlpool Refrigerator #WRS588FIHZ. It happened to us and we show you a quick fix for this error you might encounter after a power outage. If you have any questions about your fridge, don't hesitate to ask. We may not have an answer, but we'll do our best to see if we can help.
We monitored our fridge for one (1) minute to ensure the error code didn't return. If yours does return, you will need to contact an appliance repair technician (or if under warranty call the place you purchased your fridge).
From the service manual, this is a generic error pointing out one of the sensors. It is not capable of narrowing down which sensor is causing the problem. It may require advanced troubleshooting.

You accidently entered diagnostic mode on the touch screen. Simply hold the first two buttons and it will cycle back to normal. 01 was the menu on diagnostic mode.

So in our case we were no where near the buttons when this happened. In fact I was staring inside the fridge with the door open when the fridge lights just turned off and the fans stopped turning. But it does make me wonder. When the system experiences an unknown error, could it be coded to automatically drop the system into Diag Mode to make troubleshooting easier for techs?

Life saving! Exactly the same thing happened. One minute it’s on, the next, completely dark and off. I couldn’t reach the plug, so I turned off the breaker.

Hello. I have a whirlpool that just the other day stopped making ice. I’m getting an e1 on option 56. Just wanted to know if that means call the home warranty or if any other things should be done first. Thanx for any help!

If you actually have a warranty then it might be worth reaching out to them. From the research we did, this error is very generic and non descriptive. If a powercycle doesn't resolve it then the next step would be a defrost.Sometimes just thawing everything out can bring it back to life. These are about the only two easy things before doing real troubleshooting involving the diag menu.

Does it default to the factory temperature settings after a power outage is restored?

So it turns out I was wrong. The fridge temp setting does reset when the power goes out. I set mine to 33, removed the power plug for about a minute, and when I plugged it back in, it was back on 37 degrees.

Just fyi. This happened to my parents fridge. Nobody touched it. Then magically it was fine.

In test going to option 25 it says the ice maker 0 and ice maker water inlet valve 0. 0=off

Our 01 code never came back so far. From the research we did, it sounded like it was a generic error that was basically saying some sensor, somewhere didn't like something. Since it happened not too long after some power outages, we are assuming it may have related to that. But so far, the power cycle has resolved ours.
