I have Bermuda in my backyard around 500 sq feet. It’s not doing as good as the first 2-3 years. I have about ~70 sq feet of one area that weeds took over and grass is pretty much non existent. Clovers starting to grow in patches in other areas. Should I over seed with Bermuda? Or is it possible to seed with another grass type?

With those walk behind aerators it's all about technique. I worked for a company using those for 2 months straight. First day I was dead, then once I learned the proper techniques of maneuvering and it wasn't much worse than just push mowing

I'm watching this closely to make sure it doesn't get too tall. I may get out and mow it before I see germination but after that you just have to tread lightly on those first few mows and it turns out fine as long as you're careful.

Should I fence off most of the yard(3000 sqft), or will they not affect the baby seedlings too much? Thanks

I have a great guy that aerates my yard for half what anyone else charges, but his plugs are only one to one and a half inches. The machine I used to rent pulled plugs much larger. Does size matter here?? Also, I think aeration is the best thing you can do to any yard. I’ve been doing it for over 30 years with incredible results. People are always stopping by and asking how much I fertilize and water and I tell them hardly at all. I also do the recommended things like cutting high when it’s warm and dry, mowing in different directions, keeping the blades sharp, etc.

Great video Ryan, is it fair to say that if you had a lawn that was thin in the spring that you would focus on overseeding instead of pre-emergent? This was a difficult decision for me. I went the pre emergent route but have 1.25 bags of the RK Elite Rye standing by….

I used that Scotts turf builder this spring with my overseeding and it's doing a great job. Dandelions and clover come up and turn white pretty fast. Crab grass seems to get through though.

re: your crabgrass: Quinclorac. Make sure your turf grass type is in the "highly tolerant" list (ex: PRG is highly tolerant; st. augestine is NOT). Two applications two weeks apart per the instructions and manufacturer rates should be enough to quell your crabgrass. I use a surfactant to make sure it 'sticks'. Do not mow 2 days prior to application. Do not irrigate for 24 hours after application. And, do not apply in hot temperatures (right now, most of the country need not worry about that).

Huge Poa Annua problem in my lawn. My plan for fall '24 is: Level, aerate, over seed and Tenacity in late August/early Sept. and then Prodiamine as pre-emergent for the Poa, late Sept/early Oct. Thoughts on this? I did a preemergent of Prodiamine this Spring for Crabgrass, but I would still be under the annual limit. My concerns are with the newly growing grass which will be 5 ish weeks established at this point, and with the combination of Tenacity followed by Prodiamine. Thanks!

Grass grows in many different soils but how well it survives is going to be the key. It always needs nitrogen and water so you start there but a soil test could also help to figure out if you need other nutrients to help. ryanknorrlawncare.com/product/rx-soil-nutrient-analysis-kit/

Everyone talks about cool season grasse and warm season grasses but what about us guys in the middle/transition zone. I’m in lower North Carolina for example. I know nothing about lawn care so I watch videos to learn but everyone seems to treat lawn care as either living in Michigan or in Florida. What should I do in NC? I’m not looking for a perfect contest worth lawn. I just want it to be nice to look at. It’s pretty much all clover and crabgrass at the moment.
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 5 ай бұрын
Transition zone means you pick either cool season or warm season grass but neither works perfectly. There is no "transition zone" grass type so that's why no one talks about that because it's same grasses we have up north or south depending on what you choose. Most in NC have fescue and overseed in fall if summer damage occurs from heat.

@@lizzycarman601 a lot of those cheaper soils have a ton of rocks and big mulch chunks in them. I’d have to screen it myself, and I’d need a lot of bags for 6,000 square feet.

@@Piccolo_Re I use them all the time and never have an issue, but yeah, that's a lot of square footage!

Can you tell me what is the minimum size you want for your plugs? I have a great guy that charges me next to nothing to aerate my yard, but his plugs are about one to inch and a half max. The machines I used to rent pulled plugs over 2 inches long. Does size matter here??

Great info Ryan! Watched It with my coffee in hand, I would like to get out in the yard today, but there's also baseball and hockey. I gotta say I am a little jealous of both your lawn and your weather.

Always good info! I thinned out my lawn a little too much last fall and need to top dress and over seed this year. I also have a lot of clay out here in Northwest Oregon. Aeration might be a good idea. Have you heard of Fireball grass seed?
