I've watched hundreds of videos. This one, by far, is the most important one I've ever watched!!! Following your instruction and especially the progression made a monumental difference in my forehand in exactly 3 days........3 days! And it eased my transition from an eastern to semi-western grip with amazing results. Kudos, Jeff.......thanks a million!!!

When I moved to the semi western grip a few years ago, I noticed a lot more range of motion in that forward throw of the racquet, and overall hand sensitivity when striking ball. Your drill with the strings down is exactly the one my coach uses, putting me near the net, so I have to hit and follow through on that steep swing plane. He also notes when my elbow is not away from torso on the take back. Great clip, Jeff!

Super useful advice here!! as always.. been watching your videos for sometime now. The wrist looseness seems to be very critical. My grip ( learn't in my 50's -didn't play as a kid- is between eastern and semi western. ) Able to hit the ball reasonably over the past 2 years. Played with a top D1 college player - 10 min rally and he was a bit surprised ( could keep up a 6 -7 ball rally - his pace and movement was a bit much. :-)).. Now my question -- I don't see you hit shortened backswing on the forehand .. is the big C like motion on the back swing necessary.. when the ball is hit at a good pace ? wont it mess up the timing of the shot ? Perhaps I am missing some basics of this concept.. Happy to try anything you suggest. Changes are not so difficult if I understand it right.. Thanks
@ClaudioPrado-em3dq Жыл бұрын
With all due respect Jeff that is a tip for advanced players, we recreational players do not play with semi western grip, we use more the easy and familiar Eastern so the face of our rackets don not face down in the take back and we get good power though. Thank you anyway.
@jamesf.33933 жыл бұрын
This is my son's biggest problem, he tends to open the face on the backswing. I can get him to keep closed in practice, but in a competitive match, he sometimes forgets and goes back to old habits. Then the ball goes long and he starts hitting with exaggerated topspin, which causes even more problems. I'm going to have him watch this video with me and see if that gives him any additional insight. He uses an Eastern grip like Federer, so maybe going back to a semi-western would help a little, though I'm a bit reluctant to change because he hits it great when he does everything right.

Thanks, great lesson, but it does not really reveal why it’s necessary to do so. Some guys who drop the racquet on the edge hit wit not much less power, and last time I saw Jack Sock I think he was not able to win a challenger qual. match. So as good as that technique may work, it doesn’t look like it will work always and then more traditional technique may be a way better choice.

Best thing I ever did for my game was to change from the Eastern forehand to a semi Western grip. The hard part is hitting very low balls

That's awesome. Yes, low balls can be tricky with a semi Western.
@esar14993 жыл бұрын
But why is the "tail racquet tip forehand" backswing problematic though? I mean all the WTA players play like that. Thanks
@ldeue48373 жыл бұрын
it's tougher timing to hit heavy or faster balls. Most men swing compact because the ball can come in so quickly...but you still want to be able to give a good reply.
@bgdn53 жыл бұрын
Kiyrgious and Sock both raise their elbow higher simply because they started playing tennis very early and the ball rebound was very high for them, therefore they retained the habit of raising the elbow higher, and this does not give the ball hitting any special advantages.
