One of the things I like about you Eric is that you authentically will listen to other pros and truly try what they are asking. That's a rare trait in pros. This was a very powerful lesson imo and I think it will help many . I used this a lot myself. I had another variation on it where I'd start the process with zero backswing. The student just pushing the ball away as they went to finish. Then incrementally lengthen.. Something about this drill just works. I think it's related to the time delay in perception we all suffer. Which I think a good teacher is always managing . We can't do in real time what we want to do because we're behind in sense perception. I used to fly airplanes and you have to be ahead of the airplane and it reminds of this. Anyway, good stuff. And I loved your first attempt of the "chip" full finish. That was a great swing and could easily play par golf on a moderate length course. The ground up sequence was excellent because of it too. I think this lesson is s hall of famer myself.

Wow, Eric - again! Love this one - so outside the box. One of my takeaways is that for a lot of us we lengthen our backswing in order to get more distance. Can't fault us too much as this is a very common recommendation. The problem is that in order for us mere mortals to keep that in control coming down, we never get in a balanced/strong position to make a full follow-through. How many times do you see a big backswing and an abbreviated/weak follow-through? I love how this drill reverses the normal process and emphasizes the finish.

Honestly, i was struggling with contact because i had such a crazy overswing and would always fall into shanking my shots until i watched this video. The advice of full pitch shots literally had done a 360 with my golf game. I'm a 22 handicap and still have alot to learn but this has made golf so much more enjoyable for me being able to strike my irons now. I go to the range and not a single shank anymore. Obviously there's still mishits, tops and things like that but that has to do with me staying down and making sure i don't go back into my old habit of overswinging. Truly thankful i came across this video. Special thanks to Eric Cogorno , keep doing what you're doing brotha!

Love this video and feel. I struggle with my "3/4" swing or being between clubs. I would always choose to give a little extra to the shorter club rather than a "90%" swing to the stronger club. I also really love this video because it's almost opposite to another video you did a while back, where you were suggesting doing a full swing (depth) and reduce the speed and power (I believe you hit an 8 Iron to 4-6 different yardages). I really struggled with that and had issues finding the middle of the clubface. When I did this, my tempo was so much better and had much better contact. This shows me that you're an amazing coach because you're not stubborn to only one way of doing things. It's clear to me that you know and show, that one way of doing things doesn't mean it will work for everyone (and that's okay). IMO you're the best feel and educational coach. This one hit home for me. Thanks for everything!

Excellent advice! How does this affect full shot yardage? Like if my 8iron is 160 with my normal “too long” backswing, will I need to adjust to new full-swing yardages (like a 140 8iron), or should you see similar numbers due to better mechanics, even though the swing doesn’t immediately feel as powerful due to being shorter?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! Usually it's the second one. The better mechanics will be more efficient at impact so higher ball speed from shorter swing should produce same distance as normal (sometimes farther) So we are looking to shorten the over swing but maintain (or improve) distance.....generally speaking

Eric, thanks for the lessons! Question: do you keep your weight on the left side in the backswing?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Жыл бұрын
Our pleasure, Hernan! You can feel the pressure in your feet shifting to your trail side during the backswing, but I would generally recommend staying away from the mass moving much (not shifting the actual mass of hips/body way off the ball to the right). Some great players shift more off the ball, some great players shift less...however much you shift off early, I would still look to net out somewhere around 50/50 feeling in your feet at the top. I can’t seem to get consistent contact when I do this. Only have done it the last two sessions but it’s tough to break down my swing to build back up. Any advice for this with long irons or metals? It literally hurts to stop the backswing before I end up bending my left elbow (right handed). Last thing;: I still feel like I can’t load and can’t get nearly the same distance. For example, my 9i is my 150 or so club. Doing this method, I’m only getting about 110-120 and it’s inconsistent. Is this just a matter of practice/reps?

Understood... Keep in mind the point of this video... It is to fix those who OVER SWING. So if you dont OVER SWING then of course you should NOT chip to finish. Great drill. Can’t wait to try but I am missing the part to fill the gap between the chip backswing which maybe is already 3/4 swing for most to than come back to an actual full swing with a higher ball flight and the normal carry length. Is it just the „longer“ chip back swing or is it than a pitch back swing or what to do exactly to have a regular normal backswing but not an over swing anymore?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Жыл бұрын
Hi Ramon! Thanks so much for watching! The key is to FEEL like your backswing only goes to hip high, but record it and see where you're actually at. A lot of the time when you feel hip high, you'll be near a 3/4 swing. Your arms and hands are going to keep going up just out of pure momentum, so there's not a lot of transition between the drill and a normal full swing👍 More details here! kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5uloGSQqsySqq8

How do you know that you over swing?
@Melted_Butter

Usually a high handicapper problem. Club will be pointing across the line at the top. Usually high disconnected trail elbow. Video your swing and you’ll see.

What does he mean keep your upper arm close to your body. Is this like more connection?. So you are very cramped up.

Hey Ian! Keeping your upper arms against your torso/chest during the swing helps your hands and arms to trace a circular arc around your body. It also is key for creating great depth of the arms, hands, and club👍 Here's a video you may enjoy on this topic! kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGfZe2aieM-BZ9U Thanks for watching!

Hi, 95 percent of amateurs strudel in getting a fuller backswing, to gain more distance. Steve Pratt talks about it loads. Why is it bad to overswing and now more and more golf coaches encourage three quarter swings are better, why Eric thanks

Hey Marcus! ITs NOT bad....if it causes no downswing issues (John Daly, Fred Couples) It IS BAD....if it causes downswing issues (95% of ams) It depends on WHY its too long If its from 1. Too much HINGE 2. Arms folding too much Then usually downswing issues with shaft steep and/or too much casting. If from big turn I dont mind that as much. You really aren’t correcting an overswing if you’re turning my 7 iron distance into a sand wedge distance. You’re teaching me a knockdown shot.

Thanks for your feedback! Of course the idea here is to keep lengthening the swing until the players finds the swing length that performs the best for them
