the track bar is also one of the largest known causes for super sloppy steering on almost any dodge and i would recommend people to check the track bar before the steering gear box but both are known to fail early.

You left out an important step in your Redhead commercial. It's important to flush and drain the power steering fluid prior to replacing a steering gear. You don't want all the crap in your old fluid going into your new gear. Also, some systems have a filter.

The gearboxes for 2nd and 3rd gens are underbuilt for the Cummins. My first choice would be PSC. You won't need the steering stabilizer bar either. It's more expensive but it's a big improvement and the only brand new gear box you can buy for a 2nd gen.

Awesome awesome video Greg A, nothing finer than taking the 2nd Gen out of the steering lol. After owning two 2nd Gen trucks, I can say without a doubt they are all over the road with the factory steering box. Quite literally the two things you do with a 2nd Gen when your not driving it, is fixing the steering, and fixing rust lol.

170k on my 3rd gen. Learned a lot chasing my wandering steering down. Before replacing the steering box, make sure other steering components are not having movement. 1. Ensure no Track Bar movement (you did). Upgrade bolts to 9/16. Takes out 14mm slop. Make sure frame mounts have not been wobbled out. If so, weld washers. 2. Upgrade to 2009+ setup (you did). This geometry setup helps prevent death wobble. Also requires newer pitman arm. 3. Intermediate shaft bushings (often overlooked) on '94+. The coupler has a rubber coupler that gets soft through time. Heavy/large tires make this rubber a delay/non-response time for minor steering movements. Put these bushings in on any 94+, steering issues or not! You may feel a tad more road sensitivity through the steering wheel. But oh so worth the change. I'm betting many change out all other components, still have an issue, and never know about this $10 fix. Steering is tight right now. But I've had Red Head in my sights once the steering box gets worn.

Just for some actual experience with the Redhead gearboxes- I had one installed, and it worked ok( until👉 you hit one pothole with it, and it goes loose. ) If you want the real steering box, that separates the men from the boys- then get a PSC from Geno’s Garage. It has a 6 bolt cover with much larger shafts than any Redhead. My 2 nd gen actually truly feels like a 4th gen truck now. The PSC box also has a slightly less turn radius, and also is a box that comes out of medium duty trucks!

@@edizzle891 it’s a direct bolt up. They provide 1” spacers and new bolts to space it off the frame a little since it is bigger diameter housing. Also if you are currently using a gearbox stabilizer u will need to at least remove the part of the bracket that the bearing mounts to, since u can no longer use the bearing, and there’s no need for it. U may also have to shorten the tie rod at the pitman arm if u have factory steering. If u have a Synergy steering kit it is not a problem.

@Nordic674 ай бұрын
I put 3 redhead gear boxes in my 1997 2nd gen cummins in 8 years. The 4th gen box setup is the absolute best. You can buy the spacers and it bokts up. You do need to shorten the linkage slightly to make it work. The size of the internal gears and the increase in ease of steering makes it like nothing else. RedHead has a very limited warranty. They would not do anything for me because it would fail after the 1 year warranty. They are quick to blame everything but their box. Even after 3 failures they wouldn't discount or do anything other than sell me another one. They are better than stock but its still a under sized gear box for all that weight. If you run oversized tires its even worse. I was only running 33's. With 35's or bigger the box will fail even quicker. I have a RedHead steering box in my Duramax and have had no issues. On the 2nd gens they do not hold up. I still like the video but do a 50k mile update video and check play.

Nordic67, I read your post with a LOT of interest. Mine is an 01, with only 108,000 miles. I had the front end lifted, only enough to make it level. Also, it's 4WD. Steering was progressively getting worse. Just 2,000 miles ago, I had new ball joints installed, 4 new Billstine shocks installed, a new upgraded steering shaft, and a new track bar. After all that, it was taken to get aligned. Seems like it really didn't really "Solve the problem". Have been told about Red Head boxes, but your comment, about them, worries me. Geno's Garage sells PCS boxes. Are they any good ? At this point in time, I don't care what the cost is, I just would like "That problem", to go away, forever ! There has to be a specialist steering shop somewhere in Northern California. Any other tips ? Thanks, Pete.

Stay away from left coast Diesel. Ask for Nick over at HMS. Slowly I was able to upgrade all my suspension front and rear with Thurn fab products. The truck drives like a brand new truck now. @peltiereric64978 ай бұрын
Honestly I don’t even bother trying to remove the pitman arm from the steering gear most of the time I have replaced them on trucks. Normally I just buy a new one every time I replace a box because they are usually either stuck on there good from decades of service or were already replaced by a previous owner who failed to torque it down properly because they just used big wrench’s to tighten it up and then years later it’s vibrated loose and now the splines are sloppy. I will say I’ve never had any issues with NAPA steering gears but I’ve only used them on GM and Fords, never had to replace one on a Dodge yet but I have a feeling that I’m about to so maybe I’ll get a Redhead one since the Dodge steering gears seem to be prone to be more problematic than the other manufacturers

Pre 98.5 you need a 7 degree reemer to make the 4th gen steering work in the joints an I had to take an inch out of the tie rod bar

So I have to ask. The engine oil uses an oil filter, the transmission uses an oil filter and there is even a fuel filter, WHY isn’t there an oil filter in the hydraulic power steering? Is there any aftermarket options?

Can you make a video on what you used to fix oil leak at the breather/catch can on the 2 gen. Huge problem and I think it would get a ton of views based on this being a common problem. Thanks

I have a redhead one I was really hoping that it'd hold up longer than it has. Its been in for over a year now, but in the past 3 months the steering has just been driving me nuts again. I do have a lift though so I have been debating on removing it lately, but its only a 2.5" suspension lift.
