Fixative Spray Your Drawings Like a Pro! (Mistakes To Avoid + Tips) 🎨

Here is how to use fixative spray on your drawings and apply it like a pro. I give you my best tips and do a comparison between Krylon Fine Art Spray Fixative with uv protection and Krylon Workable Fixative. I’m using the spray varnish on my charcoal drawing and on a sanguine drawing but it can also be used for soft pastel, colored pencil, graphite and watercolor.

I found that the workable fixative was more gritty for me, probably to maintain some texture so the medium can still grip to the paper!

no, not as a varnish. It is used as a ground (first layer) before painting to prepare the surface. Especially if you don't want a white background (white gesso) and you want to preserve the original color of your surface (i.e. raw canvas, colored paper, etc).

How do you prevent charcoal dust on the darkest areas from flying around and landing on the whitest parts of the paper(and altering the value)?

It's one of the challenge of the medium unfortunately. I try to use it gently in the lightest areas and you can also use an eraser to go back and whiten certain areas. Hope this helps :o)

Have you ever tried Spectrafix Fixative (workable fixative) or Spectrafix FinalFix? They are non-toxic. I've tried the Spectrafix Fixative that's a workable fixative on graphite & inktense blocks (& other similar mediums) before adding acrylic paint to the canvas. I bought the workable fixative you're using, but it's so cold here (around 0 degrees), & I don't have anywhere to place my art until it dries after being sprayed. I don't think drying in the garage would work very well or outside due to being so cold. That's why I bought the non-toxic fixative.

@@SyndiaArt I've tried the Spectrafix Fixative that's a workable fixative & it seems to work pretty well. When using it, it hasn't completely stopped the graphite (& other mediums) from moving, but it has helped. I may need to try another layer or two & see if that helps. If I get the Spectrafix FinalFix, I'll let you know how it works.

for soft pastel yes. for oil pastel I try using Sennelier's Oil Pastel fix.

I like using those black portfolios that have built-in plastic sleeves. It's annoying to spend money on things that are not fun but considering that we spend so much time on a single art piece, I feel like we own it to ourselves to splurge on a portfolio :o)

I would say to use very very thin coats or just put a piece of wax paper between pages instead. Spray will darken your sketches, I don't love them that much.
