Soldering iron around 350c and I use 450-500c on the port but control the airflow for the removal. You can lower it for the install

Im stuck on getting the rest of the solder out of the holes and dont have access to solder paste. Is there some other technique you could reccomend?

Solder suckers are perfect for that step

Using flux, wick, the soldering iron and the heat gun at the same time in the right way makes cleaning out those holes a breeze.

Yes during the removal is fine, but flux makes soldering easier. It keeps the solder from oxidation which allows it to flow more freely while in liquid form.

Yes it is. The charge port is soldered directly to the motherboard, which means if it's damaged this is the only solution.

You can it just isn’t a very strong solder. I’d recommend getting some higher melting solder in the future

what kind of flux did you use? can you give a link for where to buy it? also. whats the difference between solder flux and solder paste, if solder paste is made with flux in it, why do you need both?

Can I use a standard heat gun for this application?

Yes, just might be hard and it’s better if you can only heat up the section of the logic board that the port is soldered to.

Because temps and the way you use them with distance and air flow differ from rework station to station. So find what temps work for you. But I’ll start to include more temps etc in my videos because you asked.

I had a suuuper hard time getting the port off, I started at around 240, then ended up at 380 still no luck… then I realised my nozzle was way way too restrictive, swapped to a wider one and used 340-360 with decent fan speed and it came off, but unfortunately took a pad from what I assume is Vcc, however thanks to usb c being two sided, the console is now fixed, I just let the client have the repair for free because it isn’t fixed, it just works and imo we both get something out of the deal, he originally was going to sell it to me but I offered to fix it for him first so his kids could get their save files. If he doesn’t want it I’ll just buy it and everyone is happy, I’m just a little less happy lol

Thank you so much! I just used this guide to fix my daughters switch lite after she mangled the port with a micro USB cable 🫣. I melted the plastic inside first replacement and had to desolder and resolder a new one on. A bit tricky and and not really for beginners to soldering. I've built a few guitar pedals before so not a total newbie but my first time doing anything this tiny. 🫨
