I understand the MAF number doesn't match what you expect, but since the fuel trim numbers are fine, you can't cherry pick which numbers you want to believe (unless you have some other evidence). Most importantly, if the car isn't complaining and is performing well, there is no problem. Save your money. Nice job on the new carport area.

Ok, I seriously feel old. Jake's dad is only a year older than me. But still kicking here, spent the day at two junk yards and then swapped the throttle body on my E39. Integrated TPS went bad. Next up, front control arms and a window and regulator on my XC70. Fun times.

You will have higher MAF readings on a cold start which will drop as the engine warms up. 2.7 is a good number for a warm idle air mass flow on the 3.0.

Oh also, I am trying to get a garage built during these times of crazy weather, your project especially if you can get some tarps up on the sides, might make a great emergency shelter for one of the project cars. Also you focusing on fewer vehicles, though contrary to the pattern of the "big" channels, is actually a nice change of pace, and hits an audience who has a similar car and wants to see work on it. Much of the E46 stuff is a pictures-only article on Pelican Parts so videos are a big help.

I really like your in-depth explanation. I had no idea that they had literally the same engine but only small differences in order to meet emission standards for california. I know California has some crazy ass emissions standards. Might I offer a suggestion. For really stuck on s*** I used to get a can of oven cleaner spray the part completely down let it bake in the Sun and then pressure wash it off. Or if you don't have a pressure washer and SOS sponge and a spray bottle of water works pretty good too. Just make sure that if you're using oven cleaner that you wear gloves when you do the final scrub down because the stuff is unholy either acidic or basic depending on the brand you buy.

i didn't read all the comments, so apologies if this repetitive... it's tempting to make things shiny....but if there's heat involved with that surface, remember that shiny surfaces block heat transfer while dull black (or black anodized if aluminum) conduct heat....by a factor of 10 or so, IIRC. so, if you live in a warmer area or your oil temp runs high, a dull black valve cover, with airflow over the top, will aid cooling. ditto our aluminum oil pans. I saw a 30F drop on the S52 MRoadster oil temp with dull black VHT paint on the oil pan. of course, you will take longer to warm up, as this works both ways....no thermostat! choose your scenario. if you live in Canada, go shiny!

Keep at it, Jake. You will get there. Once everything is sorted, it should run a treat. Those older Bosch systems are not bad. Even the fuel injection on my 1990 Volvo 240DL wagon is pretty reliable and it has almost 400,000 miles on the clock.

Ali Express sells a direct replacement aluminum cover for the E46 without any mods, same as original but aluminum.

At a proper idle you should be seeing the engines displacement in liters in you maf grams per sec turning on loads such as ac or a high idle like when the car is warming up will cause it to go up 2.7 at a warm idle on a 3.0l engine sounds good to me with no loads it should be within .5 either direction

I just bought a ccv diaphragm and spring plus plastic cap for my 04 325i m56 ... You can replace that brittle part!!!

hey jake i got a suggetion for you if your gonna keep driving the E46 why don't you take the engine to go get it tuned to have it to have then enable option to have lean burn so when it gets in those final drive gears you can save some even more fuel each time at the pump so that way you can even out the performance and save expensive gasoline

As for the car port, may I suggest a roof that only directs water/snow away from the garage? That will solve your drainage issues and be a simpler build . . . what slope is the minimum for your climate is an interesting question.

Oh that's neat, on my E36 (96, so M52) and E46 ZHP, I always wondered why I didn't get the metal cover like on the earlier M50 motors. In retrospect, probably the same reason my cooling system was made of plastic.

Why not put better front seats in that INSIGHT? I can recommend Volvo seats like in the 850 ans S60/V70. You would get heated seats in the proces. Maybe even electric adjustments? It would make a fun project.

If your back is happy with German seats, do not get Volvo seats. I have 2 BMWs - Z3 Coupe & i3 Rex, a Jaguar F-Pace, a VW GTI and a Volvo XC70 - the Volvo is the only car that hurts my back and my left leg falls asleep. Terrible, it will be sold soon.

I didn't understand the original crankcase hoses you set up. You mentioned having a pcv? Looks like you might have had an over the counter one in place of the OEM ccv. Then, you mentioned whatever pcv you had was found broken after the M56 install. Then, after you said it was broken, you plugged it into the valve cover port... It just really unclear what those hose were, why they were there, and what was broken in them. Glad you're having fun though.

Replace the MAF if is the hot-film type one. The hot-film type degrades but it will not throw a specific code on the DME.

My Z4's N52 engine has a similar setup for the oil separator. If I understand it right, if the oil separator goes bad the whole valve cover has to be replaced.

You mentioned you might need a new engine computer. I dont know about BMW's as i work on Saabs. But all Saab ecus are now suffering with dead capacitors given they are 25yrs old. So i replace the caps in ECU's for people and it solves all sorts of running issues. So the ECU in BMW's could be similar. If you can take the ECU apart try a capacitance meter on the caps and you will probably find they are well below value and also have high internal resistance.

His ECU got filled up with oil and that’s what he’s referring to. BMW DMEs are pretty resilient and don’t give problems until outside sources get involved.

Strange how M54/56 has plastic valve cover/serviceable CCV and metal valve cover/integrated CCV, and yet N52/N52N did the exact opposite - metal valve cover/serviceable CCV and plastic valve cover/integrated CCV...

Doesn't the N54 take four dabs of RTV when replacing the valve cover gasket? Two up front at the timing cover and two at the back?

I found one of these valve covers and did this swap, seems that it keeps leaking oil. Anyone know why? Around the new gasket on the back and front, then the oil filler cap, a little seems to spray out the round black cap hole, it's making me think there is added pressure and it's being pushed out, maybe I'm wrong, anyone have any ideas? Thanks

BMW engineered the M56 aluminum valve cover with the integrated CCV....so he isn't re-engineering anything. He is using a better engineered solution by BMW. Every BMW engine after the M54 utilizes a CCV setup like the M56 with it integrated into the valve cover, so obviously...it's a better solution.
