I remember riding 49x16 and lived in a hilly area as I do now and it was tough when I was tired. Downhill when your legs are fully cooked is sketchy to resist the pedals. It does get easier but I prefer to stay on 49x17 because I would hate the ride sometimes. with a 15 cog I would need to be really pumped up to ride. Doing weighted lunges helps though.

Don't kill yourself am been riding track since 14 years old not need to go that low your not racing 49 and 17 is good its Doesn't put too much stress on your knees. Right now I'm 66 years old and I still buy track in the city Central Park. Stay comfortable. What's good for you? You are still young. Good luck

I’m currently riding 46/16 ratio in city/flats and knees feel good but I’m doing a lot of spinning. Was thinking of upgrading to 49/16 or 49/17. Any input? I’m 29 btw.

That park looks like a beautiful place to ride! All the best parks to ride here in London all have lots of car traffic 😭 You could try 16 on the back 🤷♂ 15 might be a bit heavy for day to day.

It's pretty wild to me, how much small adjustments to the saddle can make. I bought an expensive saddle (expensive for me anyway) and it wasn't jiving with me. Tilted it down, 1 groove, and now it's my favorite saddle I own. It's nice to try new things, to see if something works better or not. I do like that bike. Thanks for the video, man!

Yup, part of the fun is testing new ratios! I'm on 48x17 and 44x18 on bmx cruiser. 49x17 seems like an ideal setup too. Personally find anything above 48x16 would take a bit of pleasure out of my ride. But everyone has their own comfortable ratio range given their terrain and commute patterns. Can always swap back to old ratios if can't get used to the new, or find a reason to buy another bike with a different cog!

Every aspect of fixed gear is a compromise of sorts... what balance you want is always going to depend on the ride you're going to do. When you're moving to harder ratio you will find everything you do at a slower cadence will require more effort, braking, starting from a stop, climbing. Everything you do at a faster cadence will be easier... like maintaining higher speeds. I use 49x15 for exactly these sorts of rides. You'll adjust and prefer it for them too I think.

I live in omaha nebraska, and it's mad hills, and I really like my 48 15. I wonder if you are getting one tooth less and would find a middle ground for you.🙏🏻

What handlebars do you have?

That's a really tall ratio, 3.27. Are you still able to skid with that?

If 49/17 is too spinny, and 49/15 is too tough, why not the obvious middle ground, 49/16?

Riding that ratio rn instead of 49/17

Saddle height is important if you want to be faster and since you clipped it would help. There are many ways to figure out your saddle height 🔥 bike
