Fixed My Bent Trailer Axles 1000 Miles From Home With a Jack

This trailer I had borrowed was suffering from some bent axles before I used it...and the Escalade wasn't making it any better. This trailer had some SERIOUS camber issues! The tires were wearing too much on the inside and I wasn't going to make the 1000 mile drive back to OKC without a blowout. So I resorted to some redneck ingenuity and solved the problem with a harbor freight bottle jack!
Apparently this fix isn't uncommon at all. If you're coming to this video needing a quick fix to make it home in a similar situation I was then you're in the right place. This is how you do it!

I have this exact samething with one of my two RV axles. Already went through 4 new tires. Second set I was living on a prayer after changing the wheel bearings that did have some play but nope, the inside edges are still wearing fast. I called the one shop in town that has the equipment to raise an RV, bend the axle with a jack and chains with an alignment machine hooked up. The problem is the $400 they want and Im out of work living on a shoestring. So thats why I'm on KZbin. 😂 I was actually looking for a video to see if it is possible to turn the axle in the spring shackles until the bend goes 90 degrees to atleast get it off the inside edges until later. I'll try a jack first because I can easily get under the RV safely to get it under the middle. I was also thinking a heavy chain run under the bottle jack and attached at each end of the axle would keep the trailer from just lifting without really bending it. Thats exactly how the alignment shop does it but with the alignment machine to fet all wheels perfect. If I cant bend it then Plan B is rotating it in the leaf shackles. Something has to work. 🙏

My axle is bent forward, so one tire is severely toed out.... Tried to use a bottle jack with some chain strapped to the axle, but it kept breaking the chain. Curious if assuming the axle can rotate 90 degrees, that it would be able to straight out being jacked up, with a vehicle on it for resistance?

In a pinch Harbor Freight is a great place to go for jacks and disposable tools.i hate buying foreign made stuff but ......

Bent axles are the result of overlooking the trailer. You need at least 5200 pounds axles for hauling trucks.

I bent an axle last weekend. Pot hole. Not even close to capacity. 2000# payload on a 2480# empty, 7000#Gvwr trailer. Not sayin his wasn’t overloaded, just than not all axles are bent due to overloading.

That’s exactly right. I have a 7x14 dual axle utility trailer 7,000lb gvrw it has a $5,200 lb capacity and I was hauling only a 1200lb SXS and hit a pice of metal in the road the trailer came about maybe a 1ft off the ground and the force bent my front left side of my axle the tire is bowing in now it sucks the trailer is only a few months old.

How did you know that you have a bent axle? Do your tires have some camber while turning? D Mine do and I’m not sure if my axles bent or not

I could see it in the mirror while towing and you could see it sitting still. If that wasn’t enough you could see the wear pattern on the tire favoring the inside edge. When turning your trailer tires will pull on the ground because they’re being forced to skid and not being turned with a mechanical linkage. It may look like a bent axle but you really need to check with the truck parked straight and no lateral tension on the tires

@@Stapleton42 so having some Camber while turning is not necessarily a bad thing? Is that what I’m hearing you say? My trailer has some camber while turning with my jeep on it but otherwise drive straight and axle don’t look bent when on level ground.

So when Jack up the axel do you let it sit for a while or just Jack up when loaded and then realease ?

It fixed this one. At least for a while 😂 I had it overloaded and that didn’t help
