Should be done using either pure nickel or iron nickel alloy welding rods. These don't shrink and crack like other welding fillers do. Using a mig is never good on cast, the shield gas flow only acts to chill the weld pool and cools it too quickly, and normal steel wire would contract too much leading to cracks forming in and around the weld.

It still came out nicely.

Thanks, I think there was some luck in that.

Just a thought - - move the repaired leg to the back of the stove so you cannot see it.

To avoid cracking the cast iron, tack it, then put it in an electric stove oven, on the cleaning cycle. When it is super hot, go ahead and weld it with less amperage. Your welding skill is fine, Just take your time, and do it right, in this case, waiting till you have the gasses to braze.

Grinders an paint makes me the welder i ain't......lol......that was a decent repair for using a wire feed rather than brazing it....funny how heat can your friend and enemy all at the same time......I've always had better luck pre heating cast before trying to weld I seem to get deeper penetration that way

It isn't something I do often enough to be any good at it, heck that goes for welding in general.
@thepyrodude7 жыл бұрын
NelsonStudios never claimed I was any good at it myself....lol....but you did good cast she just isn't easy especially with a wire feed.....it appears that you could swap the broken leg with one of the back ones to hide the repair once its displayed in its new home area

Are there any fireproof epoxies that i could use to seal a 1 inch hole in bottom of an iron kettle? It is a melting pot and got too hot in the foundry forge and a piece melted off...

Yes but I am not sure I trust it for use.

If an ornamental piece rather than a working piece get a clear plastic bottle and heat shrink it (using a hot air heat gun) round the two pieces. If it works for a broken chair or table leg it'll work for this too or should do. Crazy out of the box thinking idea I know. Instructions here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6CQo4Fombx4aMk

put ya a cement block under that side and tell folks that's a "heat catcher" nobody will ever know you put it there just in case the leg pops
@stefantrethan7 жыл бұрын
You could probably hide flat bar behind those legs (going all the way across below the bottom casting, not between) if you are worried. It would make for an exciting time if a leg popped off during use ;-). I had to laugh at your wire stickout, I don't do MIG but I expect a copper backer block would work for that? So I guess you and your wife are even now? What with you getting the big pile of rocks to play with... ;-)
