Worked for me. Thanks. I got the metal strip at Home Depot. Chain link fence tension bar.

Fixed mine today. Happened to have that metal strip for my fence lying around. I did see them at Lowe's though on the same section you buy garage sale signs.

The wind got mine and we love the design so a repair was necessary. Got an aluminum strip 1/8 x 1/2 x 48 at tractor supply. Had to repair 2 breaks. Can't even see them now...works great.

Thank you! Worked perfectly. Easy $1.47 fix since I used the metal arm from another old market umbrella we were tossing. It already had the hole, just had to cut off a few inches from one end to line the hole up. Slipped right inside the broken cantilever umbrella pieces. You saved me a fortune and I never would have thought of this!

This is fantastic my man. EXACTLY the same problem with my 6 month old umbrella. Fix is simple enough. Thank you!

Home Depot sales the metal strip. Around $4. Same aisle as the screws and bolts.

haha that is EXACTLY how I did it without watching this video. With summer coming and a broken umbrella, I looked around Home Depot and found that metal strip that fit exactly inside. I cut an 8 inch piece and first I tried to glue it inside across the break (didn't hold well), then realized I could just put screws through each broken piece and through the metal rod and fit it together. I also glued the sh*t out of it. Great minds think alike.

As a warning though: You risk the possibility of tearing the steel strap from inside-out of the aluminum frame. It is the correct solution, but I would also suggest doubling up, or using a thicker strap in addition to washers on both sides of the frame to prevent that from happening

yes this makes sense. Since I moved to Hawaii and didn't take those umbrellas with us, I can't comment on the longevity of my work.

That looked like a piece of flat rod that goes down the end of a chain link fence. I'm going to try it.

Interesting fix. This one is another alternative. Issue with this one is getting the copper tubing to the right rectangle. I may try a 3d printed solution.

So, you don’t have to cut the metal strip it’s just the correct size to work for this project?
@patricksirk69205 ай бұрын
I got lucky. The strip I found fit almost perfectly. If I recall, it was a bit short to fit all the way end to end but it didn’t really matter. And cutting it with hacksaw or rotary tool would have been no problem.
@stewsmith35362 жыл бұрын
Patrick, exactly the information that I was looking for to make a repair for a wind situation! What kind of rod did you use and where did you get it? What screws and nuts did you use for the connections and pivot points? I have to repair two broken ribs! You made a very neat repair
@patricksirk69202 жыл бұрын
The rod was in the basement but you should be able to find it on Amazon or home despot. I think half inch by 1/8. Steel or aluminum should work. As for screws and nuts, nothing special. But I did trim off the excess screw length with a Dremel rotary tool.
@stewsmith35362 жыл бұрын
@@patricksirk6920 I ordered the rod from Amazon. Will need to cut it in half because I need to repair two ribs. Thanks for the great method

Do you have a suggestion for the joint to the umbrella and pole. We just got home and ours got blown away and snapped at the pole and bent. I feel like it is fixable maybe... I hate to throw it away it was a nice umbrella.

I wish I could see a picture of where your umbrella is broken. It’s hard to think about a repair without one. You can’t post images in a KZbin chat thread, or can you?

Could a wood dowel be used instead for easier screwing?
@patricksirk69203 жыл бұрын
Id just use a common bolt and nut. Nothing special. And drilling through that metal isn’t so bad. Just get a good bit and spray it with water so it doesn’t get too hot if you need to. You’ll have no problem.

It's been happening to me for years. It's a weak point. The problem is the wind knocks them over. There isn't a good umbrella base I can find. I've been looking for years. Made a few of my own, but I need a good one that won't scratch my pool "cool deck".
