Fixing a busted axle on Grampa’s Jeep

My friends Ted Austin, Jeff Petrowich and Travis Bunch use some mad scientist skills to help me fix a broken axle on Grampa’s Jeep. The stub was stuck in the Lick Right locker so the ring gear had to come out. We didn’t have a proper hub puller so Ted and Jeff made an adapter to use with a giant 3 leg puller that Ted had.

Hi Stan! Could you continue riding with this axle broken or it was risk of losing the wheel? I am not aware about what happen in that Dana 41 when the axle brokes... Thanks and greate vids!!!

Thanks for the kind words. I’ve broken a couple of axles on the D41and was able to drive it off the trail. I wouldn’t want to go a long ways or on super tough terrain, but it held together and got me out. The axle is held in by a plate pressing the bearing cup (race) against the cone and a shoulder in the axle housing. If the break is between the wheel bearing and the differential, things should stay together enough to get home, although the wheel could get wobbly because the inboard end of the axle is no longer held in place by the side gear. If the break occurs between the brake drum and the bearing, your wheel will fall off.

@@Grampas-jeep I lost a rear wheel on my 50 m38 that way. It broke right at the bearing. Strangely enough, that is the thickest part of the axle. If you run a Willys long enough you’ll see it all.

Grandpa is so easy on equipment I can’t imagine why that old 10 spline Dana 41 (?) would break an axle! Good job on that puller setup, those old 2 piece axles after they haven’t been apart in a while are a bear to get that hub off.

Hey Stan! I just picked up a 48 CJ2A. Started looking at locker options and not finding much. Can you share what you have been using in the front and rear?

The Lock Right is about the only option for stock axles. There are some power lok limited skip units out there but they are more rare and require some knowledge to set up so they will eork right. I'm in spotty phone service until Monday so if you have other questions i might not see them until then.
