I just watched your video I haven't had a chance to try any of these techniques. But before I do I want you to know I really appreciate you taking the time to share this information. I'm sure it's all going to work out just fine thanks again hope you have a great day..update after touble shooting the switch with a multimeter it seemed okay both sides had connectivity. I took the brushes out cleaned up the copper wheel a little file down and flattened out the brushes.the brush holder looked good. Took the electric cord off of the saw and tested it and it had power. The motor seems to turn freely both ways with no problem. I put a multi meter on the ends of the outlet cord and pulled the trigger and no connectivity at all. All the wires seem to be connected as far as i could see. And the saw still won't turn on. Any way sir i appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I cant thank you enough.

It sounds like you know what you're doing but I have some ideas if you're still up for troubleshooting. You may have already done everything I'm about to describe but I figured it wouldn't hurt to make suggestions, just in case. Open up the handle and disconnect the power cord wires from the rest. Use your multimeter, set on continuity, to test each wire. Hold one multimeter probe on one of the plug prongs and touch the other probe to the bare wires on the other end of the cord, one at a time. You should only get continuity on one of the wires. Move the probe to the other plug prong and test again. You should only have continuity on the opposite wire that had it during the first test. If you get continuity on both wires while only touching one plug prong then you have a short. If you can't get continuity on one or both of the wires then you could have a break in the wire. If the power cord passes the continuity test, test the switch again. While pressing the switch, you should only have continuity between the two terminals on the same side of the switch and no continuity between the two terminals on the other side. When you let go of the switch, it should reverse. You should no longer have continuity on one side but now you should have it on the other side. If the switch passes this test then I would recommend taking a look at the brush holders again. Unless you (carefully) remove the brush holders, it would be very difficult to know if they're broken. If you confirm that they're both ok then you could go further and test all of the other wires in the handle, one at a time, for continuity to be sure none are broken. If none of that works then my guess would be that you have a broken wire in the windings of the motor. At that point, it'd be cheaper to just buy a new saw. :)

@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 3 жыл бұрын
I'm no pro but first I'd test the continuity of the switch, like I did in the video. While you're in the handle, look for scorch marks and burned wires. If the switch and wires are okay then my guess is that maybe the windings in the motor might have been fried. If that's the case, a repair might be more costly than buying a new saw. Let me know how it goes.

@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 3 жыл бұрын
If you flip it over, there should be a bolt in the center that holds the two pieces together. However, you might not need to take it apart to resolve the issue. First, I'd blast everything in that area with some compressed air. There might be an accumulation of sawdust or a splinter of wood binding somewhere. If that doesn't resolve the issue, check the knob or lever at the front of the saw to be sure the mechanism is releasing properly. If that seems to be working good, remove that bottom bolt, clean the pivot point and all the sliding surfaces and lube 'em with some spray silicone. The spray silicone lube dries completely and leaves a slick film. Don't use other types of lube because they'll attract sawdust. Let me know how it goes.

Hi Mike, It seemed that the brake wasn't working after your repair. It looked like the saw just slowed to a stop . The brake on my DW715 isn't working anymore. Any ideas?
@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 4 жыл бұрын
I'm far from a pro but, from what I understand, the most common reasons for bad brake performance is the brushes. Supposedly replacing the brushes fixes the brake most of the time. If not, the commutator might need to be cleaned. It could also be the switch. When the trigger is pressed, it disconnects the brake. When released, the connection for the brake is active again. If you figure it out, I'd be curious to know because I have a DW715 as well. Thanks for watching!

Hmmm, I'm not a pro at this stuff but the first thing I would do is to make sure the blade nut is tight. Next, remove the brushes and make sure there aren't any obvious signs of damage. From what I understand, the brake works by reversing the motor when the switch is released. Because of that, there are a few things that could cause the brake to stop functioning. If your brush holders are intact then just replacing the brushes will most likely restore the brake. If not, be sure to clean the commutator really well and test the switch. Let me know how it goes.

Hi Mike, I've got a DW713 I can't seem to find the problem. It's not the bushes, motor or switch. When I connect the motor directly to the power it works, when I connect the brake directly to the motor it makes a loud buzz. I've no idea what else it could be? I can't see anything obvious. I've cleaned out the switch and tested the continuity - that seems fine on the black wires, but between the red and yellow I get some resistance when the switch is pulled. Any advice would be great.
@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 2 жыл бұрын
If the blade only spins when power is connected directly to the motor then, you're right, that would rule out the motor, the brushes, and the brush holders. That only leaves the switch, or possibly a wire, as the culprit. My guess is that it's either bad switch or it is wired incorrectly. Let me know how it goes or if you have any other questions.

Depends on what caused the smoke. :) If it was the motor windings shorting out, then it'd probably be cheaper to get a replacement saw. However, if it was the switch or a wire inside the handle then that shouldn't cost much to fix.

@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 3 жыл бұрын
You mean when looking at the side of the blade it spins counter-clockwise? If so, the wires that power the motor could possibly be reversed so the motor is turning the wrong direction. If the blade does spin clockwise but it isn't cutting, the blade could be on backwards.

@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 2 жыл бұрын
A small amount of sparking is normal. If it's excessive, it usually means that the brushes need to be replace (which you already did) or the commutator needs to be cleaned (the cylinder that the brushes contact). You could try removing the brushes and blowing compressed air down the brush holder slots to clean off the carbon buildup on the commutator.
@Ty-tie_FTW
@Ty-tie_FTW 2 жыл бұрын
I cleaned out the brush holders and inside the cover with compressed air and tried it again, I notice that it pushes what looks like a fire ball inside the cover with a high pitched whine, and then the brake engages to stop the blade, and sometimes it doesn't make the high pitch quick whine, but the brake also doesn't stop the blade, which leads me to believe that it has something to do with the brake?
@Mikeattempts

@@Ty-tie_FTW I may not have explained it well enough but, after removing the brushes, you should be able to look down the slots and see the commutator. You should be able to shoot some compressed air directly at the commutator, via those brush slots, while slowly turning the motor by hand to clean the entire commutator. Also, it takes new brushes a little bit of use before the ends form themselves to the exact shape of the commutator. After that, the sparking may be reduced. The switch controls the brake. From what I understand, when you let go of the switch, it sends a signal to the motor to reverse, which causes the blade to slow down more quickly. If your brake isn't working then it could be a bad switch or a loose wire going to the switch.

What if the yellow and red wires are always closed? No matter the switch is pushed or released! How to diagnose and repair this issue?

If I understand correctly, that would mean the switch is bad.

I bought DCS781B from a tool shop I found on the market place. I paid the guy $500. The saw does not turn on what so ever. I am having my first baby soon and my plan is to save money instead of buying a new one for $700 plus tax. I ended up getting robbed. Do you think dewalt sells parts for the new miter saw? I’m new to wood working and I’m just not having the best time. Any help is appreciated. Thank you for the video!
@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 9 ай бұрын
Aww man, that sucks! Yeah, you should be able to get Dewalt replacement parts from various sources online (Amazon, eBay, mmToolParts, etc.). Hopefully you can use some of the techniques in the video to find the culprit. Then you'll just need a parts diagram for your model so you know the part numbers. Maybe you'll get lucky and it's just the switch. Let me know how it goes!

What about the armature and field
@Mikeattempts
@Mikeattempts 2 жыл бұрын
If the problem would have been in the armature or field windings, I think it would have been difficult to find and repair the broken wire.

I cover testing the switch at 3:54. To install a new switch, just disconnect the wires and reconnect them to the same terminals on the new switch.

just found one of these myself a day ago. curbside, left for dead basically. power goes in, but saw won't start. missing a brush. hoping the armature is okay. i'm hoping i won't have to break it down & replace bearings ike this guy did: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqW7nJt9ar12qMU

Nice find! My guess is that the previous owner ran it until the brushes were completely worn down. Was the brush spring still inside the brush holder? If not, hopefully the previous user removed it, and it didn't get pulled in. If you can spin the blade and it doesn't make any strange noises, you should be good to go. You can also look down the brush holders and spin the blade to see how the armature looks. Hopefully it'll be as simple as blowing it out with some compressed air and replacing the brushes. Let me know how it goes!

@@Mikeattempts it's a fail. checked all gears, wires, & bearings, blew out dust. put in new brushes. saw runs for 5-10 seconds pouring smoke everywhere, then shuts off. reddit says that there's a short on a copper winding. if that's the case, this saw is scrap recycling for my neighbor 😢😭

@@fong.justinm Aww, that suck. You could test the stator and armature with a multimeter to see which has failed and then order a new one. However, depending on the cost, it might not be worth it.

@@Mikeattempts yeah, anything motor/armature related, i leave alone. especially since this saw is missing several dust covers & a fence. which are NOT cheap to replace.

Yeah, I could have tested continuity of the switch first but I was going to take apart the switch either way so it didn't matter. I wanted to see what was inside, see how it worked.
