After owning this Mazda FD RX7 for over 13 years, it’s time for it to receive some serious attention and go racing again ! Sticking with the two rotor 13B-REW engine, follow us over the coming weeks as we strip down and rebuild every square inch of this car, upgrading everything along the way.

Guys please use chrome moly welding wire and not mild steel ,the reason is the mild steel welding wire when used to weld chrome moly will crack, ( at all the welding seams which is not what you need when drag racing ) i have seen it with perkins racing back in the day and sure enough i ended up selling chrome moly welding wire, which is sourced through either aerospace alloy suppliers in fact airport metals in Tullamarine has them ,so use a tig welder to weld the chrome moly tube in and in fact they also have the various angles tubing sections as well if its not to late, cheers :)

It can be pretty funny looking back at past hackery! I recently stripped my Skylines stereo install from 2004 and it was hilarious! Its amazing how useful tech screws were when you didn't care about Swiss cheezing everything! Broomy, your welding has come a long way!

It's always when watching builds where the builder completely changes everything that makes the car great. In this it's the famous and renowned handling in favour of going fast in a straight line. I'm definitely still excited to where this build goes as the vehicle is clearly haggard and I've never cared about PuRiTy anyway.

Your weld theory is not what I learnt pressure welding.But I only welded submarines and ship and pressure vessels.Roll cages are more critical.Starts and stops are were most faults occur

Love your work guys. Nice to see the FD getting some love. I'm slightly mystified why you'd pick a car that needs a solid rear axle grafted in when there are lots that don't? Seems a shame to mod the car irreversibly when they're so sought after as you guys said. Anyhow, your car, your decisions. Looking forward to what you have in store. :-)

Because I had it already, it’s my favourite car of all time, and we need the solid axle for reliability. If I was to buy a car now that I love that does have solid axle factory , like say an RX4, start up cost for a decent rolling shell would be $30k. Also, old Mazda’s need extensive tub and chassis work to fit a 9” and a bigger tyre anyway, so I’d be cutting up whatever car I got in some way shape or form.

Roll cage is not completely illegal, there are just restrictions and it varies between states (some states allow for 6 point cage and others only a half cage).
