No music Dave, the machinery and your calm, steady & enthusiastic voice are music to our ears. Looks like the hillside runoff without additional drainage keeps everything under the ballast wet & the rock just gets pushed down deeper & deeper while the mud rises. Hi Dave, Always enjoy you videos. (Not a fan of the music when talking.) When I started in the railways over here in Victoria, Australia we used Electromatic Tampers, these were replaced with Plasser Tampers, both were difficult to maintain and needed a high level of mechanical skill. Eventually we changed to the 6700s, they were much cheaper to purchase but also much easier and to use and maintain. I have retired now but never thought of using the switch function on the 6700 to push muddy ballast out of the tie end cribs. Good work. Cheers Pete.

Morning Dave that’s a good size mud spot ! We have a couple of those also once we get around to undercutting I will post a video. We just purchased a new machine a Huddig comes with alot of track attachments . Operators are getting trained on how to use.😳
@ccrx6700 Жыл бұрын
That would be cool to watch the under cutting Ken. We've had Hulcher under cutter in here a few times in the past. We have looked into one of those Huddig or a similar machine and it does have a lot of attachments, but they are not willing to spend the money right now on one. Boy, I wish you had a YouTubing counterpart on the Black Mesa & Lake Powell Railroad here in Northern Arizona. Unfortunately, it quit operations in 2019, but it was in many ways similar to your railroad there...except in a very much dryer locale. Their run was 78-miles from mine to power plant and on normal days they ran 3 round trips. Wikipedia says that their hopper cars (mostly the same rapid discharge cars you guys run) ran an average of 400-miles per day. And I think they also had a jointed rail system. Now, their trains were electric powered, and they ran between 70-80-cars on most normal trains, with usually 4 locomotives on the headend only, but with loops at either end of the line. And they were 100% landlocked too. Watching this tonight, I had the thought about how different things would be for you if your railroad was in a much dryer place like here in AZ, then I thought about the BM&LP and how they are pretty similar to your road. I'm sure they had a problem with fines too, since their hoppers were run constantly and rolled up many miles. But the BM&LP didn't have the hard curvature as your road. Anyway, my curiosity was just speaking out load through my keyboard. Cheers, Dave! 🤠👍

The wet weather we have is hard on track when the ballast is all plugged up with coal and the water can't drain away as you well know Scotty. Coal is not that bad in the ballast until it rains, so perhaps being in a much drier climate would be a big help to us, but would be a bit hard to move out there at this point.....LOL Glad you could stop by and take in the fixing a mud spot show my friend.

For sure on that TheDrew. We need a lot of under cutting done here! Big problem is the amount of time it takes to do it and put the track back in service. If you do have a track shut down, could you bring in a ballast cleaner? Those are very impressive operations!

Since we do not interchange with another RR then it would be impossible to bring one of those huge machines in here shopshop without a lot of dismantling and reassembly work which would be astronomically expensive to do. Seems like a good job for one of Loram's shoulder ballast cleaners and then use their railvac's to excavate the middle, haul it off and screen out the coal.
