Somebody got their wedding ring stuck on their finger! It was then cut off and removed. Don't worry, the finger is just fine! The ring on the other hand needed some repairs. This video shows the step by step process to repairing a ring cut off of a finger. This process also includes the steps to size the ring larger.

I couldn't believe it when I saw my dad's wedding ring for the first time since he had cut it off. I legitimately thought he bought a new wedding band . It's beautiful and I really enjoyed seeing the process of it being restored. Thank you so so much for restoring his wedding band.

My dad was a machinist and had a pretty uhh... "graphic" injury to his finger which left his wedding band cut open and twisted. Once he was all healed up my parents went to a jewelry store planning to sell the gold from the old ring and buy a new one, but without skipping a beat the jeweler said "What if we melted down the old ring and used it in the new one?". My parents had never even thought of that. Very cool.

@@brittanyb.300 Even if you don't want another ring made can get a pendant made from the remaining pieces and keep some of it original. if the rings totalled then you could still do something with the remaining stones and melt down the gold. I hope you can get it done, you may need to ask your dad if you can steal it for a little bit and give him a surprise. Or if hes now down for that then maybe you can show him a few designs of remade vintage Jewellery? Old Jewellery is often remade into something wearable. I kept all my grandpa's cabochon rings to wear and melted down all his other pieces that I'd never wear. I've made them into a 9k gold wire spool that I can cut into individual rings then make a chain from. knowing me I'll probably remelt it down and add more gold and make something else. In the end it'll still have my grandpa's gold and memories :).

I was lucky enough to inherit my great grandmother's wedding band. She and my great grandfather got married during the great depression, so they didn't have rings. Years later, their daughter (my grandma) married a jack of all trades, who just happened to work with gold. So, one day he made my great grandmother a wedding band. She wore that ring until right before her death- it was cut off in the hospital, and she immediately gave it to my mother to put aside for the day I got married. When my son gets married, I'll offer it to his bride either for her to wear or to put aside for their kids. It's nothing fancy- just a simple gold band. The history it carries makes me feel like a piece of so many of my family members is with me today. ❤️

4:24 For those who are interested, cold working the gold refines the grains, makes smaller grains. Which makes it brittle, since cracks can propagate through the smaller grains easier than a courser microstructure. So after rolling, it’s some X% deformed. The higher the “X% deformed” the more easily you can anneal the gold. This is due to a thermodynamically more stable state. In this case, having smaller grains equates to a larger grain boundary area, which is less stable, thermodynamically. Hence when heated it will re-crystallize (anneal) to lower the grain boundary area, making it less brittle.
@crli4353
@crli4353 2 жыл бұрын
Just so we are clear, and not to sound pedantic, but it must be noted that gold is NEVER brittle. There is never a time when you can drop gold on the floor and it will shatter or break. When gold is worked, it is primarily the copper or nickel alloy mixed with the gold that hardens. Take a wire hanger and bend it back and forth, eventually it breaks. This is because every time it is bent the hardness increases until it reaches a point of fracture. The same is with the alloy of gold. However, the higher the karat of gold, the longer it takes to harden because it contains less alloy and pure gold is quite a soft malleable metal which is highly resistant to hardening.

theres a few variables. the karat of gold, how much material is required for the repair, individuals labor costs etc. melting down metal also is a tricky process. generally you only want to melt down the same karat and colour metal...you caaaan melt different things but you end up with a random karat of gold and it can be quite unstable to work with 😉

I melted mine down for use in and experiment because it had no meaning, I love my wife with or without it. But I love science just that bit more, and she knows, and yes there always is disbelieve in her for this. But that is it, take it or leave me

I've noticed that is more common to use 14k gold, why tho? Here in Brazil we use 18k

The lower the karat gold the more durable the material. Pure gold is very soft so it wears down over tile very easily. So if you want lots of fancy details, as is the fashion, then it might be advisable to go to a lower k. Plus less karat is cheaper, which is a bigger reason
