Try not to open halfway two tools on the same backspring. This can weaken the spring by flexing it up from the pivot point with too much tension, on both sides of that pivot. Many a shop with a Swiss Army knife displayed with half open tools, perhaps for years, has ruined the walk 'n talk, or snap. For safety many of the 111mm and 130mm lock blades now have a gentle close. No snap. The smaller famous 93mm Pioneer models can take off a finger tip on closing. Good to remind every Victorinox fan that soaking in hot soapy water is good. And a thorough drying, and light lubrication. Thanks... Cheers!

"pretty scuffed up and faded" -- oh, dude, you haven't seen anything. I do the cleaning slightly different. Open all the tools, using pliers if necessary. Clean in hot dishwater to the extent you can. Then I run dishwashing soap straight on to the joints, and scrub clean with a toothbrush. Rinse clean, lube with a gun oil.

I use baking soda on a scrubber sponge soaked with dish soap. Baking soda is an absolutely wonderful cleanser. Its grit is mild, so it doesn't scratch anything.

When I get a used Swiss army knife I clean it with toothpaste and toothbrush. The mild abrasive in toothpaste helps dialogue other nastier grit. Then i rinse with water pick and oil with olive oil while moving the tools back and for using a paper towel to hold the sharp tools

Good idea. I think olive oil can go rancid over time. Coconut oil might be better. Ice used it on door hinges and it's lasted a year so far without issue

Take the scales off, open up the tools, wash it like your kitchen utensils. If you have access to an air compressor, blow it out or shake dry. Use an old tooth brush. Then a few drops of mineral oil at the pivots and she'll be like new again unless the tools or frame is damaged. Sand and buff plastic scales or just replace them. Sharpen all tools. You'll be good to go again. These knives last a lifetime with regular use and maintenance. I own more than a dozen of them.

You opened all the features of the knife before you started cleaning it. I came to view the video based on title, "Fixing a seized up..." but yours is not seized. You opened all the features so none of them were stuck/seized.

As far as the build up goes, my main issue is the lint and other debris from my pants. Maybe if I carried it some other way than in my pocket? Maybe a small sheath/holster? But I'll prolly keep carrying it in my pocket, so I guess I'll keep having to clean them a couple times a year! Hey, thanks for watching and commenting!

Water not be too hot, i.e. not boiling.. Tried that with mine, and the plastic handles buckled.

That’s what I needed to know about cleaning my Victorinox knife I bought used. It must be dirty so I will do what you suggested. Thanks

I just use an ultrasonic cleaner and some soapy water. It even cleaned the sap and sawdust off the saw blade.

If you are feeling brave, tray using Brākleen to get the remaining gunk out. You may want to have some replacement scales ready to go, first. Not sure if the plastic material will work well with a solvent that strong.

Soap and water? Wow, that's an innovation! I put mine in the dishwasher, dried it with a hair dryer and applied some lubricant. It's good now.

My friend rinsed my Swiss Army knife in salt water and now I can't get any of the blades to open. Any suggestions on how I can fix my knife? Thank you
@crotalusjbc
@crotalusjbc 2 жыл бұрын
I'd start with a scalding hot soapy water bath. Let it sit until the water cools down. Take it out, then soak it down with penetrating oil. Let it sit for a day, then spray it full of WD40 and start working the tools/blades out best you can. May have to lock it in a vise and use some vise grips. Once you get all the tools open, clean the channels real good. Keep lubricating and working the tools until they loosen up. Then clean with fresh water, dry, and oil.

If it got used as much as you claim, it wouldn’t be seized up. You may carry it in your pocket, but looks more like you don’t use it or take care of it.

100% Brother, he's never heard of Maintenance or oil...scales off, soak overnight in vinegar, scuba and rinse, dry , re-assemble, light oil 👍

False, the more you use it the more it will seize. It has to be cleaned and oiled periodically. If you have a SAk sitting in your drawer not used for 50 years, it’s will open just fine. It’s the repeat use/particles in your pocket that mess with it

This! It has literally been in my pocket everyday for over 10 years. In my line of work, it get's used daily! Although I will say, I've also been carrying a Rocktool as well for a few months and am starting to like it. May end up carrying both. I use that screw driver on the RT a lot.
