Another great one! I actually just had a buddy build a brand new rig, and he called me up freaking out because it wouldn't boot. No signs of life or power at all. He sent me pictures of everything inside and all cables looked seated correctly and everything looked like it was installed properly. First thing that popped into my head was let's disconnect everything non vital and see what happens. Boom, it booted! Started systematically plugging everything back in and it turns out it was something to do with front panel usb c. As soon as that cable gets plugged in, the system acts completely dead! That was a first for me in my troubleshooting history. We have yet to diagnose fully whether it's the motherboard port to blame, or the case port/cable to blame. At first glance it seemed to point towards a DOA PSU, but with a little knowledge gained from experience and watching these videos, we got his system up and running and gaming that night! Please never stop this series!

usb can have dead shorts in cheaper cases rarely which at best will cause the psu to not power at worst (and in my case with a front panel usb/sd card reader drive i was installing) take out the mobo and everything else on the 5V rail. All it takes is a cheap front panel usb design or shipping damage sometimes.

ive been building Pc's since 1990 ish. The introduction of those debug led's was one of the best things for diagnosing basic PC functionality issues ever introduced.

Few weeks ago i got one HP Mini 5103 lapton from 2011. The owner said that she doesn't need it anymore because it is too slow. She was only using it for watching videos, but it wasn't even able to play youtube anymore. I switched the old HDD to 120gb SSD and installed Linux Lite 7.2 on it. Now it works again decently and can even play those youtube videos

Very rarely do I say that PC parts are useless for all use cases, but those 2.5" hard drives really are! Too slow to boot from, and not high enough capacity for mass storage. You can buy a $20 SSD that is way faster than it for the same capacity.

I did that too with my RAM, and yet because I then realized the needed extra force to push RAM, I then proceeded to yank my graphics card without releasing the lock, breaking the lock in the process. Funly, neither the graphics card nor motherboard got any damage aside from the broken gpu lock just earlier this year. I gave my brother that graphics card and I am still using the same board no issues

I have 2 newer 3.5inch Seagate drives as extra storage and WD nvme as a boot drive. That looks like an old 2.5inch 5500rpm Seagate laptop drive and not surprised its failing. Good job getting the system back up and running Greg! ❤

welcome to the world of the normal guy, i gave up making the back of my builds look good a long time ago, if its hidden and i can't see it it doesn't exist, i dont get airflow behind the case, it's all hidden and i choose a few years ago to make it flat and put the panel on and call it good lol

Ended up doing a little Fix or Flop on my own PC recently. My system got to a point where, after a little bit of gaming, screen would go black and fans would ramp up to 100%. I would quickly hold the power button until it shut off. I reasoned that it was probably either the motherboard or the graphics card (7900 GRE). I was able to use my system without the graphic card (which I removed) with the integrated graphics on my 7600 CPU. When I got time, I put the 7900 GRE into my wife's 5600G system, and the graphic card ran well with 3D Mark benchmarks. So I bought a new motherboard (MSA Tomahawk WiFi this time) and did the old rebuild. Everything worked fine after that. ... With the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals I have a 9700x coming so my system should be better than it was before.

I had the exact same issue with my system a couple years ago. It restarted overnight after an update and got stuck on the motherboard splash screen. I finally got it to boot after disconnecting one of my SATA SSDs. Strangely enough it also had an old Windows partition on it, though I was booting from a different (NVMe) drive. Coincidence? Who knows. I actually thought of Fix or Flop while troubleshooting, which helped me slow down and take a more systematic approach. Love the service and content you provide. Keep it up!

I used to watch these regularly, but got busy with work. Now I saw one recommended to me again and ended watching a bunch, this series is just so damn addicting for some reason, please keep this alive, as I find this both informative and entertaining! I also encountered a similar issue with a faulty hard drive, not letting me boot into Windows without the recovery screen showing or load times taking so long like I was booting from an HDD. During one of the few times I didn't have an issue booting into Windows, I finally decided to check the health of my drives using CrystalDiskInfo and it clearly showed me my smallest and oldest drive (came from a PC my family owned when I was just a kid) was now having bad sectors. I was able to move my files from the small HDD to a larger HDD I had installed and after unplugging the bad HDD, it fixed my issue of long load times or Windows going into the recovery screen at boot. It also had fixed my other issue that I could not understand what was causing it - my PC not shutting down completely and just rebooting from time to time.

Suggest maybe that packing everything that the guy finds on the desk into the same computer may not be the best choice :) 4 SSDs? 32GB of ram? I think that machine would be better with only 16GB that runs at 3200MHz, than 32 at 2400 :) Also, those unknown brand SSDs will make some unpredictable problems in the future IMHO

The blue one reminded me of of the neo forza I found in my prebuilt, it played nice for exactly 1 month before it failed, replaced ram with Kingston fury 64 go kit and the ssd with 2 new Samsungs been running good.

Ram sticks can feel like that but for me it is the CPU coolers on screwing the four screws. The most scary one for me yet has been a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo. Just getting the two corners screws in felt like I had to put my whole body weight in without breaking the board.

@@idhamproaqw98 It's a Seagate as you can see here 7:08 I never had a WD drive fail on me yet the WD Black 8TB drive in my computer now has over 15K power on hours and it's still going strong. And my custom NAS(Lenovo P510) has 5 WD drives in it all 10TB each and they range from around 23K all the way up to about 43K power on hours.( All drives are the HGST Ultrastar He10 series drives. HUH72101OALE601(2x), HUH721010ALE600(2x), HUH721010ALE604) I do have a Seagate Exos 16TB ST16000NM000J in my desktop also with over 11K hours and still going. I only had one maybe two Seagate drives fail on me over the last 23 years.

Great job sorting this one out. I too am a fan boi of RX580 mystique. Bought used 1 ( 4 G ddr5 ) for 40 U.S ( 60 Cdn ) and inserted into a X58 board with 24 Gb RAM. Sweet ! Mix & match RAM not the best idea but doable usually with Kingston & Crucial. Some others play nice too. Currently working on a zero video out on a dated ASUS mainbd. ( ASUS P7H55-M Pro ) Cheers

I've had a no post issue recently because I added more RAM but I didn't disable XMP first. Basically, go in the bios disable XMP, add additional RAM then SAVE and EXIT, go back into bios enable XMP then SAVE and EXIT.

I once was helping my friend upgrade to a new gpu, and along that tried to enable XMP. However, because his memory was mismatched where 1 stick had a XMP profile while the other was just a generic JEDEC speed stick, enabling XMP made half of his memory disappear. I originally saw the mismatched kit and thought it was something funny like that, thankfully this was a lot simpler

The very first system that was not mine that I tried to fix myself while I was learning, I ended up frying it with a drop of coffee. It was on its side with an ISA debug card doing its thing while I leaned in to look I dripped coffee right on the motherboard and it shorted something and killed the board!

Post check, CPU starts up does a memory check, ram not seated properly display dram error and stop the posting process. Graphics card post check is after Ram check because CPU has to load instructions to the graphics card to system ram for check. It is hard to tell if stuff is seated in property, but I always use a flashlight if stuff is seated properly, you won't be able to see the top of the pins, that goes for the expansion slots and memory slots.

Just wandering if all the sata ports were used with all the ssd & hdd connected to them while populating the 2 nvme slots? Usually the motherboard will disable a sata port if an nvme slot is populated which might have been used by the mechanical drive that got removed and presumed defective. Just a thought. Really enloy the "Flip or Flop" series.

What i learned by building a lot of cumputer is that it is best to have a little speaker 4 pins connected sp you can hear the beeps and alway buy a motherbpard with that LED lamps så you can se whats faultu, and always buy a motherboard with Flashback button. Done that misstake with the RAM a couple of times.......Thanx for another great video.

Yeah, they still do make new RX580s, because the past several generations of video cards have no entry level or low midrange segment. These cards fill that niche and generally sell for less than $150. I bought a couple of XFX RX580s for video encoding earlier this year. Though, you have to be careful and check the specs of the RX580 you buy, because there was a lesser Chinese only edition, which was basically a rebranded RX570. These were supposed to be China only, but they've made their way into western markets by way of Ebay and AliExpress. The RX580 "D" or "Chinese Edition" or "2048SP" has a core config of 2048:128:32, where the original RX580 has a core config of 2304:144:32. They have a noticeable performance that can't be made up by overclocking.

My boss's old prebuilt Asus VivoPC has a similar but different issue involving HDDs. The PC has a 2.5" SSD as boot drive and a 3.5" HDD as extra storage. For some odd reason when i remove the HDD, the PC would refused to boot up until i plug it back. This happened when i was replacing the dead SSD wth a new one and thought i could move the 1TB HDD to somewhere else instead of just sitting in there unused.

I've been following for a while. Most stuff seems pretty straight forward. If I compare to what I did last weekend. Running windows xp custom (Delphi ) software which only supports 32bit OS and has Borland database engine with a USB card reader and getting that all to run on a brand new windows 11 machine. Tell me how to do it. I got it working and it's in production now.

it's possible that HDD is still fine, just 'corrupted'. installing windows on a system with multiple drives connected during install can mess things up, because of how it deals with MBR/EFI. I once installed windows on a PC with two HDDs and the way it installed MBR is both drives had to be connected or it wouldn't boot

There might be one other issue - I saw that many of SATA ports were populated - on some older boards if you use M2 slots some of the SATA ports do not work anymore. If the drive was on like SATA5 or 6 it could be conflicting with M2 drives.

It is a bit complicated but to simplify it. When you access a file it will poll all the storage drives. If you have multiple drives when polled it will give a yes or no if the file is located on it. If you have a defective drive during this operation it will cause the system to pause (hang) while it attempts to answer the poll. HDD's are notorious for this type of pause (hang) when they begin to go bad or have failed.

I've run into a similar issue recently where a secondary drive was causing the main OS SSD issues. Turns out it was the paging file I had assigned to the other drive whilst the drive flaked a bit. I guess it's best practice is to keep the paging file on the system drive itself.

The first time I upgraded ram in a PC I remember watching a video on here that said about making sure you apply pressure, so thankfully that was never an issue for me. What was though, was when I booted up and it would not post or just froze (cant remember exactly). Did a quick search on my phone and found out that resetting the CMOS would probably rectify it. Removed the battery, waited, reinstalled and yup that was it. Several years later, upgraded the ram on my current rig and forgot to reset the CMOS ... panicked that I had just bricked my then new PC, and when I calmed down about 20 mins later after swapping new and old RAM backwards and forwards, a lightbulb went off in my head "CMOS you utter donkey" 🤣🤣🤣

I had this exact issue with my son's computer. Wouldn't boot. Just kept cycling at the bios screen like it was going to boot, but never got to it. He had an SSD with an older disk-based hard drive. After much troubleshooting and getting to thinking there was something wrong with the SSD, I was about to purchase a new one when I thought to just remove the older hard drive and try again. Low and behold, it booted perfectly fine. The older hard drive did not have a boot partition at all, but there was something funky with the internals that kept it from working right.

Hey Greg - I know it's not mentioned in this video, but I know NZXT has provided some parts throughout this series, so I thought I relevant - do you have any input on how the info from Gamer's Nexus will affect this series and your ability to continue it, and whether you'll continue to work with them?

Same thing happened to me, had the HDD first, then got a SSD, wanted to install windows on the SSD to phase out the HDD and I think I messed up somewhere in the uninstallation/new installation and it would do the same thing, wouldn't boot until I unplugged the HDD.

I'll give a tip. Windows manager, UEFI & newer Integrated Drive Electronics ( IDE ) completes the " Devil's Triangle " ! I could've said ( TPM ) Trusted Platform Manager.

i cant even cable manage my pc too. my rear tray is bulged from cables... i have a fractal core 2300... i think the tech engineer who fixed my system also felt the same as you greg about cable management. i cant get a modern chassis because i use bluray.

12:43 was funny with my first build ... it was 2013 the good thing is it was an age where you could find hundreds of videos showing and talking about how to build a pc and everybody talking about "it will click if you are done" so i believed and just pressed untill it clicks ... would NEVER pressed so hard or even nearly that hard without all the videos about the topic xD i still remember how i was like 3 times "even harder...!?" had the feeling like i would go nearly with full bodyweight ... but okay not even 60 kg not much to talk about there XD just checked 4 times "if its the right sight and angle and all?" yes ... ok so what ever is needed i will wait for the click and press .... at the same time i was like "yeah every moment now i will hear a break instead of a click ..." ;D

The heatsink fan being the wrong way triggered my ocd lol. Also, the reason the hdd would cause windows to not load (even when it was not the selected boot drive) it cannot properly initialize the drive hence the freezing.
