Wiping off the algae with a damp rag will do wonders for having it adhere for longer. Imo it looked like you were missing counter flashing where the roof turned up the wall and behind the weather boards. I've seen people rot their whole wall by trapping moisture from being able to escape. Extending the downspout to discharge past the lower roof probably would've solved it too.

The flashing was too short. That’s a good idea, extending the downspout to the lower part of the roof. Thanks
