Have you ever seen pictures or videos of Aircraft engineers seemingly mending an aircraft using Duct-tape? Is that possible, is it legal and is it REALL duct tape that the engineers are using?
I will also be talking about what pilots do if they encounter any kind of damage to the aircraft.
I hope this episode will explain some aircraft maintenance procedures for you and increase your confidence in those.

nah you dont get it. the report will be "oil consumption rate checked within limit, oil leak is normal. cowling cleaned up. no.2 engine is lacking normal oil leak" XD ok seriously most gas turbine engine is perfectly normal to lost oil during operation as long as the lost of oil is within a specific rate. an engine that dont lost oil at all is not a healthy engine and can cause more trouble. it will be a long story to explain it.

actually there are two types of speed tape. one is what you see in the video which comes in a roll. this tape is thinner, not very strong(relatively, its still a lot stronger than what you can easily buy), usually several layers of tape is required. major purpose is to provide sacrificial protection to parts which are not load bearing such as panels with errode edges, lifted or torn seals, sealant that is not completely cured, cover up minor cracks, etc. the point is if you see that speed tape lifting or breaking or even fly away in flight, its just doing its job; another type is thicker, much much stronger, last a lot longer and crazy expensive. its usually use to cover up some small holes, missing covers or small panels like what you see at 4:15 , or use as temporary repair if permanent repair to cracks/dent will not be done soon. one layer will do the job and it last much longer than the thinner one. but as i said it is crazy expensive and very often you wont have any supply of this tape, so mechanics usually use the cheaper speed tape (again, relatively), layer it up to obtain a repair of similar strength, and its where skills, patient and intelligent make a difference between what you see in 4:15 and a nice looking and long lasting repair. but still, speed tape repair is going to break sooner or later, so periodic check is to be carried out, if the speed tape repair is in poor condition then damaged tape will be removed and new layers will be applied.

I was so happy when I first learned about speed tape. It verified and explained the flight I took on Aeroflot in the USSR in 1990. We had been sitting on the tarmac for a bit, the captain made an announcement, and I asked my seatmate to translate. “He said there’s a minor technical problem that needs to be fixed before we can take off.” In maybe 10-15 minutes a little Lada truck drove up and a person ran out holding what looked for all the world like a big roll of duct tape. 5 minutes later, another announcement from the captain. “He said that the problem has been fixed and we’re ready to take off.” IIRC that was also the flight that they told us to just put our bags in the cargo hold - a few of the guys volunteered to toss up and arrange the bags. (I was all “aren’t they supposed to be arranged carefully for weight and balance by people who know what they’re doing?”). We also bounced a few times on landing. We were all just relieved to land in one piece.

That's not what they use. To use it on aircraft it has to be in date, and has to be a specific 3m brand with an acrylic adhesive glue designed to adhere to painted aluminum. It's 800-900$ a roll they pay here at tampa international airport. There are a bunch of other specialty tapes too including woven glass matt tape that is fireproof that is required to be used if any of the apholstry panels come off, kapton tape for wiring etc. In the maintinence depo there is a small moving box with various tapes inside that is worth than most brand new cars.

In Alaska (1980s) we called it hundred-mile-an-hour tape. Saw more than one small plane taped up. One especially taped up after a beach landing that ended up in the trees. The end of one wing of that Cub was mostly tape.

The glue on speed tape is super strong too. One day, an A320 came in that had had the belly fuel panel door replaced. While the epoxy set, they sealed it with speed tape and put the plane back in service. A mechanic came out to open it (only mechanics are allowed to do anything to the aircraft). After 5 minutes trying to peel it off, the poor mechanic finally had to get a knife and cut around the edges of the door to get it open. Then put more speed tape back on after I finished fueling, because the epoxy still wasn't fully cured.

Amazing. I sat on an Air Canada plane and watched the de-icing machine smack the canoe and break off about 6 inches of the trailing part. I notified the flight attendant who brought the First Officer back to look. My spouse at the time was angry and wanted me to keep quiet as by bringing it to the attention of the crew this process you describe exactly followed and the flight was much delayed. The engineers came out and taped it back on. The First Officer came back and also explained as you have here that it wasn’t duct tape. Unfortunately the tape did not secure the piece and in the end the plane was deemed safe for flight. Air Canada was very pleased with me though as they were then able to recoup repair costs from the de-icing company. Still with Air Canada. Spouse - not so much.

This is an old video but I've been binge-watching this channel for a few weeks. Anyway, I was recently on a short flight (less than 2 hours) that got delayed for 4 hours because one of something like this. One of the fairings was missing one screw, instead of replacing the screw or using this tape they removed the whole piece. It was only supposed to take about 30 - 45 minutes.. I didn't care that they were removing the part, the Capt. fully explained what it was and that there was no danger in removing it. The really frustrating part was that it was a full flight and they only decided to release us back to the terminal and have us reboard later after 3 hours when it was clear after 1.5 hours that it was taking way longer than expected to get the part removed and all the paperwork sorted out, they were apparently waiting on a phone call from Boeing for the last 2 hours of the delay. I'm a really patient person and appreciate they want to be completely sure everything is safe but I would have MUCH rather spent the delay in the terminal able to walk around, eat, use the restroom etc than remaining stuffed in the crowded plane. Massive credit to the flight and cabin crew for keeping everyone infomed and calm and to the airline for making absolutely sure our connecting flight was 100% rescheduled (and at a reasonable time) so there was no panic or confusion at the connecting airport.
@speedbird9313
@speedbird9313 Жыл бұрын
Flap fairing? No need to call Boeing, thats a CDL, so you can take it of and fly without it for a limited amount of time. There is a fuel penalty so you’ll need more fuel. Since the flight was delayed it might of lost its slot and had to reschedule🤔
@lookingglass3626
@lookingglass3626 Жыл бұрын
@@speedbird9313 Yeah, that's what the captain said. That it was fine to remove but it would just cause more fuel burn. It wasn't something that concerned me. It was just weird that they kept saying they were waiting for this call from Boeing for over an hour. I assumed we had lost our slot long ago. I wasn't even all that bothered by the delay, the airline did a great job of making sure our connecting flight was taken care of. I was more like "Please just let me off this plane, my a$$ and legs are going numb!" 😫

Have seen high speed tape covering a hole in the leading edge of a 737-800 stabilizer for several years in a row. Of course it was reapplied every few months, but it worked just fine, was EASA and Boeing certified. No performance penalty for it either. How entries into the tech log are handled, is actually somewhat company dependent. Quite a few companies allow both "for info only" entries, if an reset has been done successfully, and for pilots to do minor technical procedures under direction by maintenance control. For example to do a dry crank for an engine related issue which is basically done automatically via the maintenance pages accessed via the CDU, or a similar test or non-QRH reset on the airbus. This is highly useful on outstations without maintenance contract to allow one more sector back to the base.

Question: Considering filling the maintenance log with a defect grounds the plane, this sounds like a strong incentive to not fill these items. So one could imagine the airline putting pressure on the pilots not to fill these. How is that incentive overcome/prevented from triggering?

FrankyBoy, while the flight crew needs to write up all discrepancies in the log, not all discrepancies are going to get the aircfaft grounded. Anything that renders the airplane unsafe to fly is going to get fixed before it leaves. The cockpit crew is acutely aware they'll be the first to arrive at the scene of the accident after something critical fails. Rest assured that they're going to write it up. Repair or replacement of many lesser discrepancies may legally and safely be deferred. Some may allow the airplane to continue after specific maintence (mx)actions or under certain operating limits. The great majority of writeups will merely call mxcs attention to a nuisance, like a failed lightbulb, a galley oven door that's hard to latch, a soiled seat cover, or a clogged galley drain. None of these things endanger safety of flight, and correction can be deferred to a station somewhere down the line that has the parts, personnel, and time to do so. Many writeups will only need mx to check that something like brake and tire wear or engine oil consumption are within limits. However small the complaint, the airplane isn't leaving the gate until mx has entered its disposition in the aircraft log.

Good video thanks. Years ago I watched as a streamer of tape slowly appeared trailing from under a wing shortly after takeoff. After flaps up, it was fluttering quite violently so at the earliest opportunity I pointed it out to a flight attendant who said simply "oh that's speed tape, don't worry about that" and also she would let the pilots know. During the next 2 hours I watched it slowly get longer as it fluttered until final approach flaps obscured it from my line of sight. Amazing how it had managed to hold on.

I never seen that duct/ speed tape fix. But I have experienced multiple delays, due to minor damages on the airplane. But those are the delays, where I am certainly not mad at the airline or the pilot, because I know, if they give the go for the airplane it is safe to fly (and actually I assume the last word is on the captain, and he wants to get home safe as much as I do!) Great video, as always. And it reminds me of the story of a fellow I knew, who always had duct tape on him to fix things. Once in the 80ies, he was on his way to Cuba in this old Aeroflot Airliner, when there was a leak in the emergency door and cabin pressure going down. According to people who flew with him, he went up, fixed the leak with the duct tape and the flight continued to Havana safely. But of course it could be, that they were exaggerating the story ;-)

I remember seeing this on an EasyJet flight. They taped up the engine cowling, & it progressively started to tear off throughout the flight. By the time we landed & the pilot activated the reverse thrust, the tape tore off into long trailing strands.

I tried and the 2 flight attendants looked back at the cockpit door and then back to me and said no. It didn't work sadly

True and if the area is cleaned and the tape is properly boned down it wont come off. In fact we were told not to paint over it. We had one "temporary" repair that was missed and painted over at D check. It was not discovered until the aircraft a B707 was stripped and repainted at the next D check. Retired TWA

Wow, that is some good shit. No wonder it is so expensive. (I was already familiar with the difference between "duck" tape and proper aluminum duct-work tape so I'm not horribly surprised. The HVAC stuff isn't cheap, and it doesn't have to hang in at 0.85 MACH.)

While waiting for boarding my last airline flight, on an A330, we got to watch them taping up the left wingtip, where the winglet was noticeably missing. I don't know if it fell off during the previous flight or it was removed before I got there. I also noticed they shut off the APU for a while and delayed boarding. The pilot later said that was because they had to shut off power to work on the plane's air conditioning, and they delayed boarding because we'd be less uncomfortable staying in the airport terminal than on the plane with no lights or ventilation. No mention of the winglet. No problem on the flight.

If it's used to patch an intake duct, then technically it's "duct" tape, no? :D The stuff that people insist on calling "duct tape" was first called "duck tape" because it was used to seal ammunition cans to make them waterproof. "Like water running off a duck's back." The color was olive drab or some variation, not silver. That formulation never was and never will be suitable for repairing HVAC duct work, so it's unclear how the misnomer occurred. My dad fought in WWII, all my friends' dads fought in WWII, we all called the stuff "duck tape" because that's what it was called. The stuff does not stay stuck to ducts for long as the adhesive dries out rapidly; I've seen enough botched HVAC repair jobs to know that. OTOH the waterproof nature of duck tape made it handy for "limp home" automotive repairs like sealing pinhole leaks in radiator hoses and keeping rattling things in place. For serious auto racing there's a serious variant called "200 MPH tape" that looks like the hardware store stuff, but uses a better adhesive and materials, and has a price tag to match. Gaffer tape is designed to be removed easily and not leave a residue, and costs considerably more than the hardware store tape. A lot of starving artists who could not afford real gaffer tape used the gummy silver stuff from the hardware store, and probably still do. In aviation, just because it looks familiar doesn't mean that the person doing the work has the same lack of expertise and tools as the beholder. Somehow the armchair quarterback who sees the pros make things easy and says "I could do that" has now become the critic saying "your tools need to look more impressive" as if optics are all that matter to safety. Flying is still defying gravity and we need to remain sober when boarding the plane as passengers. This culture of audience participation has to end at the jetway. Let the experts do their jobs. Either have trust or take the bus.

I've done more than enough stage craft to know how much better gaff tape is over masking or duck tape, especially if you're setting up in a school gymnasium or other rented venue. Average price would be $15-30 CDN per roll (small and big rolls), where duck tape might cost $3-5, depending on where you get it. Gaff tape also tears easily, for ease of set up. But the kicker to not leaving residue is to peel it off carefully. Do that, and it will come off clean. If you just rip, you'll still leave residue.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 5 жыл бұрын
I always used masking tape to make "scribble strips" on my mixing desk, but these days that's been replaced by LED displays so no more tape required. For a while gaff tape was really expensive, upwards of $70 US for a 50m roll, so I can see why people went with the much cheaper alternative. Now they're about equal in price per length; most duck tape is sold on short rolls of 5-10m for $3-5. 40 years ago you'd get 100 yards for that price.

Ah, the joys of a digital mixer ;) I've only gotten to work with them on a few occasions, but for the most part, I was always making do with whatever equipment the school had on hand. Shelling out big dough for a nice mixer was never on the budget (I was the only one who could use even the analogue mixer to full advantage anyways). I chained the old mixer into the new one if I didn't have enough channels and need to expand in a hurry, but I was usually able to arrange to borrow a larger mixer for the annual drama production. I could always justify keeping a stock of gaff tape though, because the gym teacher would always raise a stink if we left residue on the floors, and the stuff is incredibly handy to have anywhere you need to tape a cord down.

I had a window seat on an ACA DC-8 returning to LAX from a business trip to Montreal in the early 1970's, and watched a 3x5-inch inspection plate depart the wing during climbout. I pointed out the hole to a flight attendant and suggested the flight crew migt want to enter that in the aircraft log. Sometime later the f/o came down the aisle, introduced himself, took the aisle seat next to me and peered out the window. He then embarked on an earnest explaination of how "ports" automatically opened in the wing to equalize internal pessure with the less dense air at altitude. He was finishing with assurances that the "port" was no matter of concern when he finally looked at the business card I'd handed him at the outset... and realized he'd made a complete fool of himself blowing smoke up the ass of a commercial customer service rep of the company that built the airplane. His voice trailed off to a weak "oh... shit. May I buy you a drink, sir?" Got no problem with eyeballs out the window. Whether you're a pilot doing preflight walkarounds or ground staff working through flights, you know that pax can see things out those cabin windows that you won't with feet on the ground. Note to passengers: If you see something that doesn't look right, speak up!

Mentour, As usual a fascinating nugget of aeronautical knowledge! I do have one comment: While it was nice to reassure the flying public that even if they saw the stuff coming loose, that didn't spell disaster, I think you should have reminded folks not to be shy about alerting the cabin crew if they see something really odd. (Yes, I realize it's a slippery slope...) For example you generally can't see the engines from the flight deck. But the passengers (and of course flight attendants...) can. British Midland Airways Flight 92 crashed in 1989 when the wrong engine was shut down. IMHO a visual report from the cabin could have clarified which engine was in trouble. Jim
