No apology needed Jim. You are the greatest teacher for ' learn ' us how to play the banjo and not necessarily ' sing ' the banjo - but this is just an added bonus. I am so grateful for your teaching me how to play the banjo and begin my journey which I am on still going over the first 10 lessons and looking at some of your other songs like may the circle be unbroken and I'll fly away. thank you for making this possible for a 75 + young man. I just started your beginner tutorial from 9yrs ago learning to play Banjo/Cripple Creek (up to lesson 2). I wasn’t familiar with the song and looked up other videos. I admit it seemed a bit overwhelming (how will I learn this? It seems so complicated) but I am committed. This definitely helps understanding the rhythm. Learning Banjo has been a bucket list for me for years. Just bought my first banjo this past weekend at a pawn shop-a beautiful instrument. Your teaching method is amazing and I’m so glad I’ve stumbled upon your videos.

Jim, I'm new to the banjo (only been playing for a month give or take a week). And I wanted to say thankyou, your videos are the main reason why I fell in love with the banjo. And the way you teach how to play it, you honestly make it so easy to learn. I cant describe my gratitude for your videos, thank you so much. P.s. I know you already have a video on how to play duelling banjos, but could you make another one where you're close to the camera. I had a hard time trying to understand what to do with my hands. Now you may think I'm jumping ahead of myself trying to learn duelling banjos, you're probably right. Although I want to learn it because of my grandmother, she loves it, she loves how the banjo sounds, so I wanted to do it for her. And I tried learning it from other people but they don't explain what to do with my left hand very well, and I get lost. I feel way out in deep water asking for something like this. I do apologise if its too much to ask.

Thank you for the explanation. I've been working on your beginning videos, on and off for the past few months, and one of the observations I made is that where you start teaching from doesn't sound like where anyone else playing Cripple Creek starts from. It seems most folks start from that high part and go from there, which is what you did when you played at the end of the video. I'm sure you have your reasons for teaching from there first, but I can tell you that it is very confusing for those of us who don't know the words and only know how we've heard others play Cripple Creek.
@JimPankey
@JimPankey 6 ай бұрын
I teach it the way Earl taught it, and how he played it on the Foggy Mountain Banjo álbum. But here’s the thing…. I’m using cripple creek to teach concepts that you’ll use forever. I don’t teach songs for songs sake. It’s all about the techniques. And… it’s sure a lot easier to learn it in the order I teach it.

Love this and thank you. Is the slide on "goin' up to cripple creek" a full step or half step on 3 starting at 2nd fret? I've seen so many videos and they all sound good but when they do the half step it seems like the slight pluck on the open 2 is what they do to get the pitch of the note as its done in the song. I struggle with it and cant help but wonder if sliding from 2nd fret to 4th on 3 would give the same effect and be way easier. Hope that makes sense. I'm just learning over here!

Hey Jim i was wondering i just started playing and am using your videos i love your videos but i was wondering if you had a way to change the roll patterns up a little by changing the strings plucked or adding a fretted note just to change the sound? Like i found out just looking at the roll patterns you teach us to use the forward reverse roll but you alternate the 3rd for the seccond before we make the pinch and its a lot nicer learing that was you keep the finger pattern but it makes a small lick just changing the 3rd to the seccond. Any reconmandations on adding a diffrent sting to the other roll patterns? Love your videos ocer here in ontario canada Have a great day eh
