Fixing Common Monitoring Issues With Mixing Station - Re-Gain - #AscensionTechTuesday - EP133
This week, Chad demonstrates the Re-Gain function in Mixing Station for fixing monitoring issues for mixers like the Behringer X32, XR18, Wing, Midas M32, Allen & Heath QU, GLD, SQ, Soundcraft Si, Vi, and the Mackie DL32S.

Oh. My. Gosh. This is EXACTLY what I needed!!! The gain was never properly set for all of our mics and it has impeded our ability to use in-ear monitors. However, we are trying to limit changes to the current in-house and livestream volume. This is a great temporary fix so I can move forward with our in-ear setup, at least until we move to a new building and start our mix from 'scratch.' THANK YOU!

I recently discovered a flaw. While changing gain in Re-gain adjusts all settings associated with gain, one of those is compressor. If you have the compressor set for the correct gain level, the input changes and you adjust it back to the correct gain level the compressor moves. This happened at our last rehearsal. The keys were near clipping. I shifted the gain down in regain then just couldn’t get any oomph out of the keys. Was checking through compressors and the keys threshold was way way down. Dialled it up and they were back in the mix.

That’s not necessarily a flaw. MS is maintaining the dynamics of your channel by adjusting the threshold of the compressor and the gate. In most cases, that’s a good thing. Especially if your gain was too low and you needed re-gain to boost your input gain. I think your example is a little different just by the nature of how clipping affects the signal. Glad you got it figured out. Thanks for the comment! -Chad

@@AWTechTuesday not quite that simple. The compressor is set for the correct input gain. If the gain is to high you move it down to the correct level which the compressor would already be set for. Regain is moving the compressor when it didn’t need to as only the gain needed adjusting not both. I still think re-gain is awesome. Especially when the band goes live and punch it out like they don’t during rehearsal.

Thanks! In this video, the mic is plugged into the mic input on the camera (canon M50ii). It’s being processed in Davinci Resolve with some waves plugins - Waves C4 to help reduce noise, F6 EQ, CLA-2A compressor, De-Esser, L3 multi-maximizer. Thanks for watching and commenting! -Chad

Our X32 is fairly new to our church and is handled by volunteers. I just noticed last week where the electric guitarist's main fader was maxed out -- needed more in FOH. The WL is leery of gain/trim adjustments if at all avoidable ( obviously affects just about everything else) so I asked the guitarist to send more signal from his Line6 Helix. Seems like regain would be perfect for this also.

@@AWTechTuesday I belong to three different Facebook groups with quite a few members who use mixing station and or x32 mixers and I've begun sharing some of your videos over there.... this one in particular was well liked.. since we've only had our x-32 since about November and I've been avoiding physical attendance due to immunocompromised family members , I'm playing catch up on both the app and this particular mixer ....our old one was an early PreSonus studio live 24 channel... all that to say that I'm going to be looking at your video list for the tutorials on those new to the x32.... I'm convinced that mixing station is the superior app but I haven't been able to convince my worship leader of that yet. he's still insisting that the church-owned iPads use the old behringer app. 😊

Very cool and helpful feature - thanks for this video! I have a slightly different feature suggestion, but kinda related... I would love a feature to essentially invert a channel fader. Meaning, for example, if all channel faders are at unity or louder and one channel needs to be louder but system headroom is nearly maxed out, wouldn't it be helpful to be able to select the fader that needs to be louder, hit an invert button, and have all the OTHER faders lower their volume by the amount that you increase the needy channel, making the needy channel sound louder, while preserving system headroom. Lower the OTHER faders without having to adjust 15 faders. Thoughts?

Thanks for this video, it was very helpful. I’m wondering if re-gain is the place to go to fix the problem we are currently having? The problem we have is that on only one channel, my amp channel, there is a tremendous amount of compression. This can be heard whether I am going direct, or using a mic on the amp. It can be heard in the recordings, out front and definitely is in my IEMs. We’ve only been using Mixing Station for about six months and our band person in charge cannot figure out how to separately control the compression on my channel versus the overall compression. Is re-gain the place to do that? Can compression be independently controlled within an individual channel? Thanks for your expertise, I appreciate you!
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 3 ай бұрын
Yes and no. Your input gain is before your compressor in the signal chain so, if compression is the issue, reducing the gain will reduce compression. That said, it sounds like you need reset your channel a bit - Start with the gain with big loud chords and adjust the gain until you meter around -18 to -12dBfs. After setting the gain, then adjust the compression so you’re getting 1 to 6db of compression. If it still sounds compressed after that, then something else is going on. -Chad

@@AWTechTuesday thanks so much for taking the time to reply, I sincerely appreciate it. I will take your recommendations to our soundman and see if we can tweak it some and bring the compressor down. Have a good day!

I'm trying to wrap my head around how the pre/post fader aspect determines whether a channel's fader moves as a result of Regain?
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. As a default, the main fader is affected by Re-Gain. That fader affects post-fade mixes but does not affect pre-fade mixes, so, if Re-Gain DID affect post-fade mixes, they be affected twice - once by Re-Gain and again by Re-Gain turning up the fader. Imagine Vocal 1 is set to -5 and it’s sending to Vocal Verb at 0.0 post-fade. If you used Re-Gain to lower the input gain by 3db, the fader for the channel will now be at -2. Because the input signal has been reduced by 3db, the amount of level going to the Verb is basically still the same amount. If Re-Gain did not differentiate post-fade mixes and moved the Verb level to +3db, then the level of reverb will now be 3db hotter than before and will change the balance of the mix. I hope that all made sense :) -Chad

This is a game changer. However, set your gain control to double tap for pop up, rather than double tap for reset. A few times I’ve gon to tap and hold for the pop up and accidentally double tapped and reset the gain. Always looked at gain setting so if it happened i could swipe it back up.

I totally agree on doing it right from the start. This actually happens to me a lot where I come in to a situation where a group already has an established mix but may require adjustments like this on the fly. In an instance like that, this is a fast and effective approach. Also, it works in reverse - if the singer doesn't give you a proper level during soundcheck and is now peaking the pre amp, you can use Re-Gain to gain down at the pre while turning up the other levels at the same time. Pretty neat :) -chad

I have ran into this in the opposite way where a guest singer will come up and blast away the rest of the band and being able to quickly change the gain would be so nice. I never knew this existed before and thanks for the video.

It's simple if you think about it ....the vast majority of churches have less than 500 people and use volunteer musicians, volunteer vocalists and volunteer sound technicians.... many of these don't take the time for a sound check at rehearsal or if there's any it's very brief or time is only allowed if there's some obvious problem that can't be ignored.
