I have a few isolated areas in my lawn that are severely compacted. In the video I show you how I manually core aerate and top-dress with sand to improve compaction, drainage, and increase the availability for air and water to penetrate the compacted areas. Thanks for watching!

Man, I've got that same compacted clay soil. Just got a large depression in the front yard that I'm trying to fill a bit at a time so I don't kill my grass. It's been a week now and it's making a difference. In my video it almost looks like someone buried a CASKET in that area. I love your row of arborvitaes along the fence. Those look nice.

Great info! I have an area that's bald from compaction. I have stuck a screwdriver in and it barely goes in compared to the other areas that's nice and green. I used a liquid dethatcher and a manual aerator like the one you have. Do you recommend I place some play sand too and keep using the liquid dethatcher every 3 to 4 weeks? I mainly have clay soil.

When you push the yard butler in and it doesn’t pull out a plug it usually means the hollow tubes are blocked. Also when you manually aerate and you aren’t removing a plug, you are pushing the compaction away from the hole you make and in doing so making the compaction even worse around the holes you have created?
@TurfCulture
@TurfCulture 3 жыл бұрын
I can assure you the tines were not clogged. In the example that I showed in the video you essentially have two options, reason being is that I have a sand cap incorporated into the top layer of top soil. Option A: I can either use a hollow tine aerator, pull plugs, remove them, then incorporate sand into the holes. Option B: Spike aerate and add sand into the holes. Option B is the preferred method for sports turf managers due to the fact that you do not want to chance bringing any dirt to the surface where you have established the sand cap. Once you've established the sand cap there is essentially no turning back to ever topdressing your lawn with soil or organic compost. In this case where the dirt was so compacted that the plugger would not successfully pull a plug it actually worked in my favor.

@@TurfCulture true, you should test PH but organic matter will always be beneficial especially in mid to end of autumn when the temperature is a bit lower as grass roots better in lower temperatures and will give better root growth and better nutrition for the following spring too :) oh, and fun fact, iron sulphate is good to put down in autumn as well to reduce the risk of moss. this allows the grass to breathe faster thus increasing the grass/soil temperature, which will provide an undesirable climate for moss to grow

I'm curious how this worked. There are a lot of people that say adding sand to clay soil makes it worse, I read an article from the University of Illinois that read, When sand mixes with clay, it creates a soil structure akin to concrete. To create a real change in clay soil structure, you would need to add a 1:1 ratio of sand to clay. So did it work? I have clay soil in Zone 5a. I've been adding compost to it but wondered about the sand.

@@carolinafine8050 i disagree with that. your initial inclination was right and you should not be adding sand. it will make your soil harder and will create drainage issues. this is done on golf courses to make a hard, fast surface for play. your lawn is not a golf course and if you did add sand, you'd have to do a lot more maintenance to address the issues the sand will cause. I'm an experienced lawn technician and all research from university extensions will tell you the same thing.

Are you seeing any major nutrient deficiencies since you are using sand exclusively? The golf course manager is a friend of mine and he says sand is a way for golf courses to improve drainage issues but not necessarily compaction because of how water moves between 2 distinct boundaries like a sand and clay layer. Years ago he emphatically told me that sand should only be used on warm season grass areas of golf courses where drainage is an issue. Sand should not be used for residential applications especially with cool season grasses and heavy clay content soils because it was impossible to incorporate the sand into the clay without tilling. I have found no university turf management publications that support sand top dressing as a cultural management tool for cool season grasses however there are tons of studies showing why it leads to future issues
@TurfCulture
@TurfCulture 2 жыл бұрын
This is a loaded question, building a sand cap is used on both warm and cool season turf. You can reference this not only in golf but also soccer and baseball field construction, the fields are built on a sand base or slit sanding for drainage. The process also aids with compaction issues due to the amount of foot traffic on the playing by surface, that said you have to continue to aerate and top dress or you will run into issues down the road.
