You should put some Teflon tape on the pvc thread and then a little pipe dope.

@@darosa5741 thank you for the tip! I assumed that having the dope by itself is enough and didn't want to deal with the extra hassle.

Asking the experts: Is there a better way to extract the PVC piece from inside the galvanized fitting?

Just heat the metal with a heat gun or propane torch and the plastic will get soft and you can pull it out with pliers

You can also get a drill fitting for irrigation systems that will fit inside plastic pieces and unscrew the broken fitting
