I like watching it all, there's a channel called the Duracell project and thats mostly fiberglass so never worry about how building or what you building with. Stumbled on your channel and it looks like an awsome project.

Watching the both of you from Long Island in the States , the both of you are doing a tremendous job , I have watch many people build boats both all wood and part fiberglass and your work is outstanding, when I was younger I had a 1984 Hunter 34 , sailed for many years with the family and had great times keep up the beautiful work , I think wood boats are the best , hundreds of years of wood boats have proven that ! Carry on 🖖🏼

Leftie you impress me more and more with your willingness to tackle anything. You remind me of my wife. When I injured myself she had to adapt and take on many roles as well, that she was not accustomed to but today that lady can do absolutely just about everything. The only think she won't try is welding, I don't know why she just refused too. lol

Love watching you guys build your own boat, so jealous! We had a 1979, 10.6m Cheoy Lee, she had a teak deck which was a nightmare in Australian conditions. None of the products I tried to caulk the deck lasted more than 6 months in Queensland conditions. It was a never ending losing battle. In the end we painted the deck with Rustoleum Marine paint. This was fraut with danger as any moisture under the teak could or would rot the ply base. You know when there is any moisture as it expands in the heat and forces it out through the paint. Luckily we had only a few leaks. The other big downside to a wooden deck like teak is in summer conditions it too hot to walk on bare footed. I would have loved to rip up the teak and fibre glass it. I absolutely love timber decks but wouldn't have one in Australia. Food for thought for you guys. Cheers

Great episode. The deck work is exciting progress. I'm with Rick, glassing and painting is great to watch too. 👍 Team Tarkine is doing a great job of show casing Tassie boatbuilding and beautiful Aussie timber too. Nice to meet the guest ship wrights. Love your work team. 😊

Tarkine is going to be so strong that the sea will have no effect on her structure at any point! Lefke, you are just amazing at the jobs you do! Boring that stern tube looked like a fair beast of a job! No way I could do a job like that nowadays, thine old bones Y'know! Thinking about your deck, I hesitate to make my suggestion with your admirable devotion to wood in mind but here goes anyway! About the deck aesthetics have you considered some of the very beautiful synthetic teak look-alike stick-down materials available now? I only suggest it because I thought that since the deck is going to be made of plywood perhaps the synthetic product may not be out of place anyway? BTW, I love your commitment to Tassie timbers! I am hopelessly in love with Tasmania, to me it is the best state in the federation full stop. I am longing for another holiday down there asap! I certainly am looking forward to seeing Tarkìne gracing the Hobart dock with her presence! Built exclusively from Tasmanian timbers!* *Have you used exclusively native timbers or have you also used some plantation products as well? I am a totally committed subscriber and I am certainly looking forward to your launching of Tarkine!

Dear David, thank you so much for your thoughts and your compliments. We really enjoy reading everyone's input. You'll be very happy to learn, as you live Tassie timbers as much as we do, that our deck will end up being build out of celery top pine boards and black caulking. We also really want that traditional look and the magical feeling of timber decks. We choose to lay down plywood first, then we will lay down a second layer of plywood to cover all the seams and add more strength. Third it will be covered in fibreglass that will roll over the deck edge down to the hull to provide ultimate waterproofing. And lastly we will lay a layer of celery top pine on top. So it will look like your traditional wooden deck but will be fully waterproof and strong as an ox. We have used all Tasmanian timber. Or at the very least Australian timber. Lots of Tasmanian oak and some Australian Jarrah. The deck structure will all be celery top pine as well as the deck planking. Some pretty bits of Tasmanian myrtle in the interior and our transom is made out of king Bill pine. There are undoubtedly also plantation timbers mixed in with the Tasmanian hard wood boards we used in the planking. Thank you for your question and hope this answer is satisfactory!

Matt and Iefke, I found your build a few days ago and have binge watched all the way to this episode. I am living a dream through your fantastic project. To see the effort you are putting into Tarkine is truly admirable. To take on a project so large as your first build is very courageous but you have obviously studied well and have great friends with lots of knowledge. Sadly for me I will have to wait longer between episodes now I'm caught up but I will be anxiously waiting for the next. Tarkine is beautiful and I can already see you guys sailing the seven seas in her. Congratulations on your progress so far and best of luck in the future. I hope your shoulder heals fast and well Matt as the pain is obvious in your eyes as you watch progress continue on Tarkine and you are unable to get your hands in the mix. Until the next episode...

Awesome work progress ! The glass and paintwork look really good too. No worries about showing some ‘oh glorious’ sanding and painting as it is part of the job too😁. In order to keep dust out of your tent, maybe if possible, you guys can install a small fan with an air filter to create a bit of over pressure inside. This could help a bit as most paint booths work that way.. Just my 2 cts. It looks like Matt’s shoulder is doing better too👍

You basically build a paint booth and wet the floor down. Then you can place a box fan on both sides to bring air in and out. Just use furnace filters to catch the dust coming in and dirt going out

Just came across your channel- what a fantastic boat you both are building- well done ! I don't if it may be of any help at this stage or you guys are already aware- there is this Australian made epoxy called Megapoxy- they have this preparation that is already in a peanut butter consistency. It's cheap and really saves on the mucking about thickening up the epoxy with various fillers.

Wow, the inside of the stern is just gorgeous, what a beautiful job! It’s so nerve wracking drilling a straight line though a huge chunk of wood, wonderful work though! Obie is such a sweet dog. Your tent seems like just the trick for keeping the dust down for varnishing, that wood will be a big feature on deck. I never knew there was species of pine called celery top, sounds interesting. Thanks so much for the episode, they’re always so good!

does it seem weird for the under deck side to be painted only between the deck beams, why not simply paint the whole sheets, does it seem like a lot of extra work, and why not paint the upper sides of the deck beams to seal them from moisture, or do they need to breath? - ps i hate masking off and wasting tape coz i'm so tight haha

Good point but we painted both the topside of deck beams and the plywood with epoxy, it’s is the strongest bond when only epoxy and no paint in there to ruin the bond.
