I'm actually working on this project. I just did the second floor and now I'm working on the first floor. I must day your clamp idea to straighten the boards is Absolutely GENIUS. Game changer. Thanks for the vid upload

Thanks! They were warping a bit so came out of square. It definitely helped. Thanks for watching glad the vid helped

Dude, you have a great crawlspace to work in.

Thanks. It’s not bad, I’m tall so it hurts my back but I want to build a play space for the kids down there.

Thanks Fat Guy! My kitchen and living room definitely have that bounce. I was in my crawl space this summer and now that the weather has changed I'm ready to tackle this. Your video was great! Thanks!

Thanks for the comment! I think the worst part of it is being hunched over for long periods of time. Hurts the ole back. Good luck with the bracing. It helps

I had bounce in my floor. I screwed 1x3x8' strapping every foot apart perpendicular to the bottom of the joists. Wow what a difference! Cheap, quick and easy.

Thanks for the video. We just moved into a new build and when we walk across the floor, you guessed it, everything shakes! It’s so embarrassing!!!! I’m going to tackle using your video as a reference. Thank you!!

It definitely helped the bounce. It still does it slightly, but the floor is greatly improved since completed. More solid feeling. Besides, will prevent future twisting of the joists. Thanks for the comment

They did not cover the excessive deflection ie “bounce” in the floors under your home warranty? I’m in a new build and in my 2nd floor master a cup of water would fall over if walked too fast 😅😅😅. Going Vito add that to my warranty list.

If you want to get more flex out of the floor after bracing it, glue and nail or screw 1x3’s (2x4’s if you prefer) along it’s length on the bottom. Turns the joist almost into an i beam and reduces the tension on the bottom of it.

Across the bottom of joists or parallel at the bottom? Like an actual ibeam. I’m curious to try

Did you mean "less" flex ?

thanks for shaing Im down to do the same to my kitchen floor

I don’t know why the builder didn’t add cross bracing but the joists twisted without them. It did help in making the floor feel more solid once completed. Thanks for watching
@Wowwow-wl3kx2 жыл бұрын
after you did this, bouncy floor is gone?? my garage has 2nd floor and I want to reinforce it... but I am not sure this action is impacted or not. thank you~!
@Fatguyintheforest2 жыл бұрын
It helped tremendously! The bounce isn’t completely gone but with the cross bracing it’s more solid and preventing further twisting
@SergeM1233 жыл бұрын
Did it work? Measured deflection after fixing?
@Fatguyintheforest3 жыл бұрын
I never measured how much it was bouncing but it definitely helped. Feels solid. My island would jump prior to fixing.

It’s a standard in construction, I’m shocked that this house was missing blocks

I wish you showed the bounce before and after. But I am sure it stopped.

I wish I did as well. Was one of my first videos, I wasn’t thinking. It hasn’t stopped completely but it’s absolutely better and worth doing

What kind of lumber did you use?

How did you determine where to add the supports? Did you do more than one row?
@Fatguyintheforest2 жыл бұрын
I went in the middle of the joists and staggered them so I could screw them to the joists
@ianmctimoney42062 жыл бұрын
Herringbone bracing is better Quicker, less material, and doesn’t block off your hoist space if you ever need to run lines or cables etc
@Fatguyintheforest2 жыл бұрын
Yes you’re probably right. Good points
@rustyshimstock86532 ай бұрын
Herringbone cross bracing is difficult/impossible to install after the deck has been put down. Particularly nailing the top edge of each brace is easy to do from above. From below, you cant really screw or nail through the diagonal brace into the joist. Solid blocking gives you the same rigid geometric effect as herringbone.
