This neck has some buzzing frets. Matt Brooker traces the problem to some poorly seated frets and shows two ways to clamp them down. He shows why seating the frets is the first thing to do before taking a file to your fretboard.

I have filed down a loose fret just as described, not realising it was loose. I just thought it was high. I was confused the first time I restrung it, and even more confused after doing the whole proses a second time. I did fix it properly, but I could have done with this video about twenty years ago. I don't think I had a computer then, let alone internet. Also no KZbin then. How did we cope?

+Symon Fobbester You're quite right HOW DID WE COPE - Unfortunately on KZbin there are many uploaders who give VERY bad advice especially about truss rod adjustment and neck relief. Get to know the sites you can trust (this is one of them). If in doubt ask a luthier. Don't, unless you know them to be reliable, even ask a music shop assistant.

I had this problem on my Les Paul Standard 2004. I live in Hungary. I showed it to 5 luthier in Budapest. No one wanted to simply glue it, they all wanted to level all the frets. I didn't want it, because the guitar was perfect!!! I took the guitar to France, to Marseille. I found a Gibson licensed luthier. He said the same thing, that he had to glue the fret, and after level all the frets. I abandoned, and I said ok. He leveled the guitar and he FUCKED UP. The guitar was buzzing EVERYWHERE. He didn't know what was his mistake, I paid 140 euro, and my Les Paul was fucked up. I took the guitar to Hungary. I gave it to a good luthier one of the 5 that I saw at the start. He didn't have a Gibson license, but he leveled it again. Now the guitar is good, but my frets are practically gone, they are completely used. Next time I'll need to refret the guitar. Because of one fret, and shitty luthiers...

Thank you so much for solving my problem for me. I bought a cheap ukulele off eBay and discovered the 3rd fret was buzzing whenever I fingered a chord (such as A or F) above it. I did get a refund via Paypal, but I would like to get the sucker going if I can. It would be a shame to throw it away. So now I at least know what to do. Keep up the good work!

I re-fretted an Epiphone Casino that had buzzed from new, and it still buzzed due to lifting frets. Rather than glue all the frets which would be a nightmare if the frets were to be removed again, I went to the expense of buying a fret tang expanding plier, worked well and of course I have another tool in the box.

There are so many people unjustly criticising this video. This isn't a criticism but a tip that might make the job easier for many people, There is no real need to remove the strings on a small job - just loosen and tie them with a piece of string to the back of neck. If this would interfere with any clamping they can just be taken off at the peg end, bundled and left near the bridge end. I've even tapped a lifting fret in (they don't always require glue) without even loosening the strings by using a small piece of wood between strings, then tapping wood with hammer.

From personal experience I found hammering in frets(complete neck) left about 1 in 5 not seating properly & needing to be redone. I quickly discounted paying a lot of money for those vice grips & bought drill press cauls. Perfect fit every time. Highly recommended. I lock the press down for about 10 mins while glue cools. As I have had bladder cancer (35 yrs of exposure to iso-cyanates) There are no solvent based products in my w/shop. I use hide glue for fretting - can be softened for fret removal. I am also concerned about when superglued frets need to be replaced - fretboard damage? Also I only used the costly set of fret levelling files once - the scratches they left on frets were so deep that removing them resulted in the fret being too low. Using the drill press cauls resulted in almost no levelling required after installation of frets - done with fine wet/dry paper on radiused block - these are very useful. Thanks Stewmac for excellent service & delivery half way around the planet in 4 days!

Small tap with a rubber mallet and it went back down and stayed down. I was almost about to get rid of my guitar thinking i may have needed a full refret because of it. Not anymore! Was hoping it was more common that i originally had thought. I guess it is. Simple fix too in my case so thanks!

@stewmac
@stewmac 6 жыл бұрын
It will make removing the frets a little more difficult. We recommend re-heating the super glue by placing a soldering iron on the fret you're pulling. A good tip is to keep the iron on the fret between the jaws of your fret puller. This way, if the iron slips, it will hit the fret puller rather than the fingerboard. Here's a video where Dan demonstrates his technique for this job. He uses a bent Fingerboard Guard while applying heat with the soldering iron. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHm8YWOEe96Afckm13s

Good work. But the statement "The more you can transfer the energy from your strings to your guitar the more sustain you'll have" is totally wrong for an electric guitar. You want vibrations to remain in the strings, so the pickups can detect them. A solidly mounted fret allows for that - vibrations are almost all reflected back along the string at the fret. A loose fret causes string vibrations to be transferred to the fret and lost there. The same principles apply at the bridge and nut.
@tosicz
@tosicz 3 жыл бұрын
Good one. Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.
Жыл бұрын
Technically you are right, but advanced players might still want some energy lost to the wood or wherever, hence the tonewood debate, the preference for warmer sounding strings, the existence of semi-hollow body and even hollow body electrics with wooden bridge (think vintage Höfners). If you manage to keep most of the energy in the strings, players might deem it sterile, lacking soul, while a lower sustaining sound might be interpreted as more pleasant. What I thought might not be correct in the clip was to say that the air gap below the fret is the cause of lost energy. Air has a very different acoustic impedance compared to the fret, so if the fret is stable sideways, it would just transfer resonances to the wood sideways and the rest of the vibration energy would just rebound at the fret-air material. Otherwise the air above the fret would suck out the resonance just as well. Some glue on the other hand might have a dampening effect (depending on material). Although if that would really be a problem, no one would like guitars with glued necks. So I am just trying to be very smart. :)

@players praise 'resonant' guitars which, in physics terms are less resonant and retain more energy in the strings, which is then heard acoustically.
@vw9659
@vw9659 Жыл бұрын
@ when people talk about "transfer to the wood" as if it's a good thing, they are not thinking that they are losing vibrations from the strings (and therefore not seen by the pickups). They mistakenly think that the strings can make the wood vibrate while still keeping the same vibration energy in the strings, without any real loss of energy from the strings (perhaps deriving from a misunderstanding of how acoustic guitars work). Of course that would break the laws of physics. Or they think that pickups are like microphones and can hear wood vibrations, or that wood vibrations directly vibrate the pickup (neither of those occur to any real extent). That's assuming there is any real thought going on, rather than just repeating what they've heard or read somewhere from the science-illiterate ("the body really resonates dude"). Ask anyone who talks about "transfer to the wood" or "the body really resonates" to explain what's going on and you won't get any sort of your nuanced argument about some losses perhaps being sonically more pleasant (which of course such sounds "might" possibly be - sound is subjective). You either won't get any coherent explanation at all, or something like the above. That is, nonsense physics. Fortunately they also greatly over-estimate the amount that the solid-body wood is vibrated by the strings - it's very small, as all measurements of real guitars show. So lucky for them there is very little loss of string vibrations to the body in a solid-body electric. As to the suggestion of maximum retention of vibrations in the strings being "sterile" or "lacking soul", where does that notion come from ? Yes, there are guitars that sound that way (for all sorts of reasons). But can you give me a single piece of evidence that links that to maximum retention of vibrations in the strings ? Why not call it "rich" and "full sounding" ? Aren't they more logical adjectives ? But in case, pre-judgements about sound physics like this make little sense. If a guitar sounds good to you, it sounds good to you. Implying a priori that losses are good makes no sense. If your strings retain maximum vibrations you can then EQ the sound you want downstream. But you can't put back frequencies that have been lost. Re the fret, if it is loose and the strings can thus cause it to vibrate, then that energy has been lost from the string, so will not be seen by the pickup.

I am not sure this would work in ALL scenarios. However it's a decent and good one video. If a fret has been loose for a certain amount of time, a lot of gunk sure has to been piled up inside the fret groove, and I say you must use a "solder-sucking" device first to clean it off from grind and grivel before an glue would stick. An explanation of how to clean it properly first would be appropriate. And you can't just pour isopropanol in there and wash it all out, because it MAY ruin the fretboard. Also hard maple fretboards with clear lacquer coat on MAY need different treatments due to that the clear coat may have chipped too. On any oiled, rosewood, ebony, mahogany board, this method may be sufficient enough though.

+waynzwhirled You merely place a piece of wood with a weight on (or a clamp that fits through the soundhole) across those frets - although if using superglue the short time it requires to manually hold them down doesn't make it worth the trouble. (over 90% of acoustic players wouldn't even miss those frets if they were extracted - that'd stop 'em buzzing ☺☺☺)

how do you clamp down a fret over the body on an archtop or acoustic?
@stewmac
@stewmac 6 жыл бұрын
For pressing frets into the tongue on an acoustic guitar, we recommend using the Jaws2. www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Tools_by_Job/Tools_for_Fretting/Pressing/Jaws2_Fret_Press_and_Inserts.html For an archtop, we recommend slightly enlarging the fret slots so you can press the frets in by hand and fix them in place with glue. Then, clamp them using a radius block over the frets and a caul shaped for the back of the archtop guitar. You will need a clamp that opens wide enough to fit around both the radius block and caul.

Why was he clamping a 9.5" radius block to seat a fret on a 12" radius fingerboard? I have this particular Fender Chris Shiflett signature guitar. It has a 12" radius fingerboard.
@williamrea2974
@williamrea2974 7 жыл бұрын
Because the smaller radius puts the pressure on the ends only. The instructions with the brass press inserts say to seat the fret ends first with the supplied 6" radius caul ...then go back and use the appropriate insert for your radius.

when you play a string and it buzzes, is it the fret before or the fret after thats the problem?
@TooSlowTube
@TooSlowTube 2 жыл бұрын
(very late answer) The buzz is the string hitting a fret closer to the bridge than the one you're holding the string down against. It's often the next one along (for a higher note), but not always. In an extreme case, you get the wrong note played - a higher note than the one you should get, because the string touches the raised fret when you press down.

If you transfer energy to the neck you will not increase sustain! The energy transferred will tend to vibrate the neck and mostly end up as heat as a neck is a fairly poor resonator of acoustic energy and it's an electric guitar anyway. A loose fret robs sustain because the system is insufficiently stiff at that point. A fully supported fret is stiffer.

One question: what if the two frets considered good in the beginning of the video are instead too low compared to the most of the other frets? Wouldn't it be wiser using a radius block and sandpaper, the right way, to make all of them the same height, letting us having a straight neck? Thanks for answers in advance.
@topwatertrl
@topwatertrl 3 жыл бұрын
Use your truss rod to take all the relief out of the neck so it is flat.. Set a 24" or smaller metal straight edge on top of the frets. Shine a light from behind the straight edge. Do you see light? This will tell you whether that one lone fret is low. Repeat toward both edges of fret board as fret may be low only on one edge. Cheers!

Superglue? what happens when you want a complete re-fret?
@stewmac

You can place a soldering iron on the fret to heat and reflow the super glue. This will allow you to pull the frets, and you can then clean the slots and prepare them for the rest of the refret. Here's a link to Trade Secrets! Issue 256: Removing the frets on the Mike Bloomfield Tele. Scot Maciver posted this comment 6 months ago and I still remember the exact situation. I’m glad I looked too, because a few frets had popped up, but I just didn’t expect that to be the problem as it was a higher end Ibanez. Pressed the frets back in and haven’t had any problems with it since.

Not to state the obvious but your radius block covers several frets so why not work quickly and do 3-4 a time? No need for expensive jaws and accelerator and same time spent.

Why do people perpetuate this mythology about electric guitar tone. He states that you want to transmit vibration into your guitar neck. That's nonsense. The more vibration picked up by your guitar body and neck the quicker the rate of decay and loss of certain frequencies depending on the resonant frequency of your guitar. A rigid and neck and body are far more desirable.

As long as you heat each fret to reflow the super glue before pulling it, it should be any more difficult than refretting a neck whose frets weren't glued in. You can use a soldering iron to heat the frets and reflow the super glue. This will allow you to pull the frets, and you can then clean the slots and prepare them for the rest of the refret. "The more energy you can transfer from the strings to the guitar, the better the sustain" - 100% wrong. If you could transfer ALL the energy from the strings immediately, there would be no sustain at all. Sustain is caused by the strings RETAINING their energy as long as possible.
@ricardoc.8468
@ricardoc.8468 8 жыл бұрын
Correction: "The more you transfer the energy of the strings to the guitar, the LESS sustain you will have". Why? you are transfering energy coming from vibration. Law of conservation of energy (kinetic energy in this case). Pure physics.
@cornbobrimlove7892
@cornbobrimlove7892 8 жыл бұрын
Not really.....if you have a loose fret, it's like having a crack in a symbol for a drum set. It sucks the energy away from the sound vibrations. In other words it muffles the vibrations. You want your frets to be solid as they can be to keep from wasting the sound energy/sustain. To demonstrate this, put a cloth under the string where it lays on the nut and the saddle. All of the energy will be absorbed into the cloth and you will have no sustain and no good tone. Same principle just exaggerated.

Cornbob Rimlove ok you win. Physics loose. :)
@onpsxmember
@onpsxmember 7 жыл бұрын
Nah, just your understanding of physics lost. The vibration runs along the string between bridge and the current fret you're pressing the string against. Those are the points where the wave gets reflected. Those have to be solid. The longer the wave runs up and down the neck, the longer the magnetic field of the pickups is disturbed. I just add this if someone else scrolls through all those comments.

+Nicholas Fanzo He DIDN'T file a fret with the neck propped up - he explained what might happen if you filed a fret that only needed reseating. Why don't you watch videos before posting inane comments? Or perhaps get sound on your watching device - the file NEVER touched the frets (although a person watching but not listening might have thought he did).
