As a Hungarian, I believe there are a lot of things missing from the Hungarian Focus Tree's Historical Path and almost it is not even accurate. I miss the struggle to keep the balance between the West and Nazi Germany and the tries to stay neutral. I miss the cheated elections to keep away fascism and communism from the parliamant. Horthy being fascist is inaccurate (Horthy was literally English friendly, however Germany was closer so he had to 'pretend' being fascist, but if it's true, he even saved some time for the jews in Budapest), he was conservativist, monarchist or nationalist maybe (but not ultranationalist or fascist). I miss the Prime Ministers (who had the real power like in the UK), German pressure to let Wehrmacht march through Hungary to help invading Yugoslavia, the suicide of Pál Teleki who gave up trying to save Hungary from a second world war. Later on, after Germany started losing the war on the Eastern front, a communication and some peace terms with the West was made which got leaked and Germany literally invaded Hungary for that (Operation Margarethe). Where's that? Later a new PM and Horthy tried to stage a pro-soviet (but not communist) coup and switch to the Soviet side like Romania did, the fail of that, it would be a great event in the game along the blackmailing of Horthy with his son. Horthy resigned and was arrested in Germany then Ferenc Szálasi, the "Hungarian Führer" ('Nemzetvezető', Leader of the Nation) took the power, this is when Hungary became fascist. He's not even in the main game if I'm remember correctly. I know this comment is kinda long but what I want to say: Paradox please just read about the target country's History and maybe ask people from the country. Anyway, I hope they will make a more accurate and exciting Hungary and focus for it later. I know that Hungary is not in the main point in history of the WW2, therefore this long comment showing how Hungarian focus has nothing to do with history. I think it could be interesting if you could choose how much time you commit to a focus. Shorter times committed would either reduce effects or maybe make bad events possible. My thinking is like you didn’t spend enough time planning it out or something, you set a deadline and that has either negative or positive effects. It would add hella replay ability too. Imagine going down the same tree path but devoting different amounts of time to different parts and ending up with an entirely different result. It solves the problem with not being able to get through a focus tree and adds more decisions for the player. Time is a resource just like oil or rubber so you should be able to use it as you like.

I think this game has an identity crsis. It was intended and started as a ww2 strategy, but over time devs realized, that people want more freedom, more gameplay, more "arcade". Thats why the older the tree is, the less different paths it has. People dont want to just play the same one war over and over again, they want more variety. So they add more and more different paths for players to try and have fun. But this collides with "realism" (or rather, some common sense). Like, bringing back Byzantium is super cool, its interesting thing to do, you can have fun etc, but it doesnt really make sense. This empire was dead for centuries, during this time the idea of national identity very clearly formed, it wouldnt work like "press the button and everyone who you conquered now is your core, because it was like this few centuries ago". The same goes for much "younger" empires, like Austria-Hungary and Ottomans, there were so many different nationalities in them, and some of them really didnt want to (like Poles in A-H, German and Russian Empire). There is a reason for why they fallen in the first place. Im talking about this, because Tommy said that making cores should be easier in hoi5. And I totally agree, this makes so much more enjoyable gamepley stuff. But also just doesnt make sense in this timeframe, when nationalism was really strong. Hoi5 devs would need to make some hard choices about this. I think that many mods do a great job in dealing with this, giving cores when this makes sense (even if its a stretch)

I think the ahistorical paths may break the game, but the historical paths still maintain a strong realism because almost none of them give cores on anything, or if they do they're minor and won't turbocharge one nation like coring all of Italy as the Byzantines does.

Considering Poland had the biggest resistance movement of the war and that Polish forces were one of the biggest allied armies , it would have fit right in. I feel like every nation should have 3 check boxes with focuses those being. 1. Historical prep for WW2 what was that nations economics and politics before and until the outbreak. 2. Alt history route which many nations do have at least 3 different options but this should also give its own benefits and negatives with eco/diplo. 3. Regional dominance for military weather that be tanks, air, inf, or navy i think this is the most important one for minors even if they just have 1 it means they can build into something.

I understand colonies controlling themselves, you should have a lot more influence on other types of puppets from a gameplay perspective. cores on historical claims makes sense if historically the people there were historically the nationality of the occupier (should probably affect compliance too then?). Like you said the game is too short for australians to start calling themselves japanese citizens and be integrated as core territory. even coring 100% compliance territory that you just walked into with tanks about 3 years is a bit weird maybe another system for abusing occupied area manpower (feels like raising compliance is a better result than the other options). The current compliance/resistance system is good but weird, you let the civilians manage themselves, improve their quality of life drastically (building 10 factories, improved infrastructure massively, bringing cars to the population all creating jobs and a better life overall) and they're still not warming up to you any quicker than they normally would.

From what I've seen, the focus "Risk of famine" for India has a chance at some point in time to causes decreased factory output, dockyard output, construction speed, increased consumer goods and decrease in manpower. Having spent way too many hours playing Greece, there is only one conclusion I can make. It has to be S tier. There is decision making at every moment and each one can have huge consequences. I particularly like the dynamic between the military, navy and air sections because it really feels like you’re choosing what strategy you’re going to follow before you even start fighting/ researching. Also going for the Byzantine empire has so many different ways doing it that I’ve spent more than 30 games trying new and different strategies. Absolutely S tier.

Ya know, I really agree with a lot of Tommy's points here, focus trees are often, especially now too long, they need to be shorter but with more possible choices to make A reward for achieving things is a great idea and I'm surprised I haven't heard that idea yet, like in eu4 the missions can be very fun when they give rewards that will help you get closer to your next mission And there's really not enough options for coring in hoi4 it's a pain in the ass when you try a world conquest without meta gaming and there's not enough manpower for you. Like it should be a feature that you can get events or decisions where people leave, assimilate or immigrate to a region and you get more control over it.

The thing with the soviet tree is that it compeltely lacks the options to go diferent paths aside from Stalin or Trotski. It deserves the F. However, in terms of effectiveness its very strong. Positive Heroism is one of the single strongest branches in the game. Tank Genius, the huge 10% research bonus, 3% manpower followed up by a research slot are just great. Purge is nice, because it gives you options. In my last SU game i did only choose the -75 PP and purged nobody. With Tuchachevsky and all the advisors the SU is such a powerhouse. Plus the small civil war lets you do lessons of war quickly and you can rush your 5th research slot afterwards. But yeah, it really needs a rework. Im baffled that its still not done.

@Tommykay mods have done that so much since hell, 1.4 even. I remember persia rising having those kind of focuses where the requirements for them were "goals" and it was a reward focus. I remember another Iran mod that focused HEAVILY on king Reza Pahlavi, the oil situation, the religious unrest, and SO MANY DECISIONS (on the decisions tab) tied to the focus tree that would control if the civil war for example happened, or if England attacked Iran. They also do a TON of stuff like that in Old World Blues, and it is sick. Enclave reborn submod alone has so many decisions and focuses that are PURELY for rebuilding America piece by piece after capturing key territories that it blows you out of the water. The events are so colourful AND storytelling through them is so on point you forget that this is a ww2 rts

The Dutch focus tree becomes an S for me because of the Dutch East Indies mechanic and the bicycle divisions. I think relocating the government and fighting from Indonesia is such a cool thing. And the unique inundation lines and Zuiderzee works are really fun.

Tommy, the lack of portugal manpower is compensated by coring brazil/spain AND getting +20% colonial manpower from noncores from 2 focuses, which starts summing up pretty well Also you get sweet intervention decisions for china or any1 who threatens your colonies

Hey Tomi, you wanna play a good poland mod? Dream of poland, this focus tree is so awsome (but the this mod is not complete), you can play only the monarchist (becuse the monarchist only completed) BUT you can choose 6 kings, 1 polish queen its not too good but yeah, you can choose a french King end you can annex france with a civil war or the french has return napolean III. you can choose a Habsburg King end you can annex Czechoslovakia, Austria and Hungary in 210 days end you get all of divison (75 div.), end you can choose a german King end annex germany with a civil war or a focus, end we have a japanoes end a russian King but those focuses are not good

Paradox had awesome opportunity to change Italy and USSR focus trees with this dlc. Both major nations of the have their own intress on Greece and Turkey. Russian historical intrest on Bosporus and Italy on Anatolia and Greece.

As a Turkish guy i can say that they made turkey's tree perfect there were things that even i didnt know in it

The only gripe people could have is you can't properly join, say axis, until late 42 early 43, but historically Turkey didn't get involved until much later. Same thing with Bulgaria, you would want to get into wars in 38, but the struggle is brutal. You also have to build up your industry to about the same time, so I can't knock them for making them historical, but god, can it be taxing!

You should do the same thing for Road to 56 trees aswell. I think it'd be really interesting, especially with how different some of them are when compared to the normal game.
