You're a real mechanic not a Part's replacement guy thanks for sharing

Congratulations to Kenny for being a TRUE Mechanic that still TESTES things instead of just replacing parts! I watch your videos from here in Missouri!

It never ceases to amaze me how many "mechanics" can't fix a car if the scanner can't tell them. So many lack the ability to test something on their own; it blows my mind. Keep up the good work Kenny!

Most factory trained techs are taught to follow a flowchart. These shops rely on the few master techs they have to take on the big jobs. They're usually so busy, they just guess and hope it works. Unfortunately, that makes for a lot of wasted money and angry customers.

Not many folks would go to the trouble (time and effort) to did that deep. Also, not many folks these days have the knowledge to do this - just replace stuff until it works. Good going ! This Old School type of work is dying off with our older folks.

I’ve seen 4 in the last week in the mid west. RIP my 98, 01, 03, 05, and 04 cavaliers. They taught me so much about. Miss my 05 the most. My 04 became a money pit early 2023. Had a K&N intake on it from the 05. Was fun as hell to drive around.

Much less expensive than a relay, new fan & temp sensor. The other shop lost a customer and the customer lost money and time. Good job.

Amazing what a little time to actually diagnose it can do instead of just throwing parts at it. You are one of the good ones Kenny.

Back in the 80ies no computer necessary to controll the fans, temp sensor controls the relay to control the fan. Why complicate things.
@kairu_anameАй бұрын
More to go wrong so you have to bring it to the dealership. And a bunch of "while you're here" gets done at the same time.
@LA_CommanderАй бұрын
Gives the PCM more overall control of the engine. Probably for more precise temperatures control. Emissions and mileage requirements from the government.
@TRiToN219Ай бұрын
Just a relay and a fuse: + simple, cheap, easy to diagnose and repair - big current surges, no option to modulate the power to the fans, hence no control over fans speed and cooling rate ECU control: just reverse the pro/cons for the previous option The good middle ground would be a standalone PWM fan controller that is only responsible for the fans. Looks at a temperature reading and sends just enough power to the fans, no more no less. It's pretty much just a big mosfet with a closed loop control circuit, and you can set the specific parameters and algorithms when and how it turns on.

Good video, marine grade heat shrink is the best! I use it for all wire repairs even when inside a car.

The cut ground wire had the green crusties as Eric O. of South Main Auto would say. Good job Kenny!

I hated shops that just threw parts at cars without proper diag, i would get this kind of stuff all the time and it would almost always be a broken wire. Good Job Ken!

Kenny! As Eric O would say, you missed the money shot! (finding and breaking the wire with the green crusties) 😂 A good simple but excellent diagnostic.

Have yet to see green corrosion in CA, except on battery terminals. Fair share of odd electrical issues from west coast trade-in auction hub and direct buys. Just never a situation like this, can’t say I’m envious of that 😅

Speaking of house wiring light switches, my son had older car that had burned up fan relay and burned up relay plug so he ran some heavy enough gauge wire to the dashboard and used an actual house light swtch for his fans when he needed them.
@brad6665Ай бұрын
Good find and repair. I saw a wire just to the right of the repair had a white stripe that showed signs of being rubbed. Might check what is rubbing and at least tape that wire
@Jack-ns5mnАй бұрын
That is the best and neatest way to repair a broken wire. Those marine grade butt splice connectors are too bulky and expensive and only save you a few minutes.

Hi Kenny great video just wanted to add something else the relay in the fans are also there to stop the fans from back feeding power when the fans are not switched on and the vehicle is driven the air flow will make the fans turn turning them into a generator and feed current back into the system but it cannot do that with the relay in place regards peta

Kenny, no mechanic in my area is doing this. Digging in that deep to fix something like this. We get the parts cannon and sometimes just a flat out, we wont work on that. Lol😅

Sooo many shops have just Parts Swappers and no Diagnostic Technicians. So at the end , the customer loses with a large bill and a problem not fixed.

Makes no sense the control wire would overload and melt. There was some green residue on the wire, corrosion and corroded through? or bit of green insulation? Also the wire seemed to be in the middle of the bundle, so well protected. Definitely a mystery as to why but a great demonstration on how to save money by finding the problem instead of guessing
@michaeltichonuk217628 күн бұрын
Green Crusties!
@milfordcivic6755Ай бұрын
Technicians aren't taught well enough to diagnose, that's why they guess by replacing parts. It takes a lot of practice to become good at doing it, but not impossible as most automotive electrical systems work similarly now.

that looks liek it was from the factory. someone was ticked off main that harnes and said. ill snip this wire a lil. in time it will break and blow the car up..

Can't really blame the owner for throwing new parts on a car that old. Especially if in a state with harsh weather as it ages the vehicle more.

They spent more in parts and labor than what the car is worth. Perhaps the customer should have found a good mechanic to begin with, or seen the dealership showroom a long time ago.

This was a common sense textbook type of repair. That being said, whoever looked at it before has no diagnostic skills what so ever...
