In this video we will show you how we fixed our locked up ac compressor. The a/c compressor did not want to turn over and when activated it smoked the serpentine belt. We decided to take apart the a/c compressor and we were able to fix. The a/c compressor works great after the repair and we saved ourselves some money. Not every compress can be saved but out of curiosity we took it apart.

I ran a fleet of trucks and learned plenty the hard way that there are a few things not worth your time. If a compressor seizes for any reason, junk it. If you pull a compressor out of service for any reason, replace the filter/accumulator and orifice tube/expansion valve. If a compressor seized, you replace the compressor, expansion valve/orifice tube, accumulator/filter, and the condenser. After that you replace any exposed o-rings or seals and charge all areas with the correct amount and type of oil. When the system is closed up you pull a deep vacuum. The next step is crucial, reach down and turn the pump at least 7 times by hand to ensure any excess oil is out of the pump cylinders to prevent hydro-lock. Now you can charge the system and have a lasting job completed.

You missed something equally important to your statement. You're not done after you turned the pump by hand and charged the system with the correct amount of refrigerant, you can still do some damage if you mess it up. What did you miss? Whenever you've messed with the oil charge (fitted a new oil charge inside the system, either spreading it through the components or, even better, fitting a whole system charge inside the compressor after you've flushed the system dry of any oil), you need to ensure that the air conditioner runs on the maximum blower speed, with all dash louvers opened and on fresh air, for 5 minutes with the engine kept steady at idle (and ensure that the engine is idle before turning the air conditioner on). This allows the oil to spread throughout the system and properly return to the compressor. The maximum blower and fresh air in particular keeps the compressor running very long cycles and the TXV wide open. After these 5 minutes, you can do whatever you want with your engine and the AC turned on, because the system is now correctly lubed.

@@bassdabob If you don't adjust the oil charge so that the new compressor only contains the same quantity of oil that was drained from the old one, or flush the rest of the system, or otherwise you know for sure that the system is empty of any oil, you get a fouled condenser and a fouled evaporator (walls get covered with oil and heat exchange is hampered), or, with a severe oil overcharge, the new compressor soon slugs/hydrolocks.

Dragon Steel & Tera Volt: Sound advice from you both. Worked in transport refrigeration on small trucks & vans: Using this style of compressor.....however.....Downtime is crucial. (Mostly owner-drivers) Never messed about with failed compressors. They were junked & replaced. Whilst we know you need to replace/clean/lube the rest of the system, it was not always possible: Had to have that truck back on the road ASAP. If it failed again in a week or two, then, & only then did you schedule a full repair back at the depot. Not all failed again...... Win some...lose some.

I had no idea how the inner workings of an a/c compressor worked. This was really informative and removed so much mystery. My brother is an ASE mechanic and he will replace a compressor but not open a compressor, as if there were some otherly world components that would upset the balances of good and evil. The bearing became dislodged from the swash plate for a reason, the clutch material that is burned off is gone and you are going to rely on the used gaskets to reseal and hold gas molecules which are smaller than oil or water molecules at 400psi. There is a reason I don't bother repairing a locked compressor. Yes if a coil fails I'll change it but once it's locked and burned the clutch and opened the airgap...no dice.

That's very circumstantial. I work on machines of which certain repairs are prohibited either via warranties or liabilities. Some parts have to be replaced even if you can fix them. On scroll and rotary piston A/C compressors, like in the video, the clutch end is balanced with the scroll . If you replace the clutch, wirhout rebalance, the compressor life is dramaticly shortened thus you spend more saving nothing. Also, if the clutch is worn, the pistons or scroll are not far behind which is why I won't warranty a used compressor.

The problem is, when a compressor seizes like this, i.e. when the piston drops a shoe on the swash plate, you don't know if serious damage has happened inside, especially to the swash plate. It's very delicate metallurgy. The swash plate looks scored to me at 5:18

With Time + Labor..., sometimes it's best to get a new one or used one and call it the day. Another note I like to add, with Time + Labor + Parts.... It will be the same price repairing or getting a new one. People gonna have to weight it out and find what is best for them. For " me ", Time + Labor + Unknown + Etc..., I'd better off getting a new one, since I can make the Money and buy and less work and no unknown issues later.

Thank you for showing repairs others are afraid to do. Low system pressure was likely to cause problem since it’s designed to have nominal preload pressure as a precondition for clutch to engage. Excellent video guys

Problem is low oil return rate due to a refrigerant charge low enough to cause oil return problems, but not low enough to make the static pressure go below the one programmed in the ECU.

The reason most mechanics won't do it without replacing the compressor is if it comes back with a compressor failure the customer is going to be pissed, and the mechanic is going to charge him again for a proper repair.

Good way to save a penny and help others troubleshoot the inevitable. Typically shops will sell you on a whole unit; fixing this short term will safe the customer money to allow for future purchase of new components and bring them peace of mind. Doing business with an honest non money thirsty mechanic, hard to find in today’s world. Customer service goes along way.. CSI-rewards🤔 “Never step over a dime to pick up a penny” Do a lot for a customer now and when they need something serious done they’ll remember how you didn’t over sell them on new unit.. ballooning costs etc. Typically they go to another garage when they need a new compressor.. just how the ball bounces. Great video and Insite... any one could of bought a new compressor and vacuumed the system and replaced Freon.. this is getting to the root of the problem. POM 👍🏻

The problem is, shops prefer the "a new compressor or nothing" approach to avoid any comeback-warranty hassle caused by a compressor on its last legs, especially when it's a very old one. If, for example, a compressor which received a new clutch coil seizes, the customer may try to place to burden on the shop since they were the ones who tampered with the system last after all.

Typically if the customer had this trouble.. temporary fix for a permanent problem. Of course a garage, this particular video does t represent a garage more so a solo mechanic and more so this estimate for complete unit upgrade vs. this method shown here SHOULDN'T AND WOULDN'T guarantee a permeant fix. Saving the customer some time and money before they commit in the near future for entire unit upgrade. Garages would DEFINITELY want to up sale because it pays the shop and mechanic fixing it the hours allowed for this type of repair.

He's using a IR gun and that's pretty normal occurrence. If he used a cooking thermometer it would have been around the low 40s (that's what mechanical control valves are usually calibrated to).

Problem with the dismantle is the environment needs to be super clean otherwise contaminates will clog the system over time, but the dryer which picks up the moisture is even more important to replace with a new unit, as its finished once its exposed to air. Good to see people still want to fix stuff these days!

I had the exact same symptom on my 2016 Fiesta. Completely siezed, smoking belt when AC was turned on, and it would stall the engine. I purchased a replacement but this was very educational. Great video!

I'd call it a shoe more than a bearing. It should be made of steel. An oil film needs to be between it and the swash plate. Generally PAG 46 oil for this kind of compressors. Also check for proper lubrication flow. These compressors can run with a very low refrigerant charge since there are no pressure switches at all-only a pressure transducer on the high side. And very low charge deprives the compressor of oil return, the evaporator catches the most of it. Not enough oil flowing inside = no oil film, high friction, and things like this can happen. Can also happen when you fill a large amount of oil (for ex. the whole system charge when you flush the system) through the refrigerant machine instead of putting it inside the compressor through the drain hole (or suction port if no drain hole is available) and then rotating the clutch hub 10-20 times before letting the engine drive the compressor's shaft. Personally, i'd scrap the entire compressor and thoroughly flush the system, replacing condenser and dryer and checking for TXV cleanliness, after something like this happened. Fitting it back may open a can of worms. By the way, this should be a VS16 compressor

Looks like there was oil inside the compressor on disassembly, also it is not a constant run variable wobble plate compressor as are in the newer Fords. If you notice there is a clutch and a coil in front of the compressor when disassembled. It is not a constant run compressor. It must have pressures switches somewhere in the system as on the accumulator and the high side hose. Variable compressors have no clutch, the PCM controls a pressure solenoid on the rear of the compressor thus loading or unload the unit.

@john You're wrong. Constant run compressors can have a clutch too. The clutch just doesn't cycle off and on unless the system isn't ok, it's just not permanently mated to the engine shaft like with a clutchless compressor. It's the capacity which gets cycled, just like with a Carrier 05G compressor and its two unloaders, one for cylinder bank. In fact, if the control valve is mechanic, a clutch must be there, otherwise AC would basically be always on. The one in the video has the mechanic control valve, but compressors with both the electronic control valve and the clutch have been made too. Google for Harrison V5 and learn how that compressor works. Also, the problem with the oil is that, with not enough refrigerant, not enough oil comes back to the compressor to cover everything up in a thick oil film, even though oil escapes on disassembly. This compressor hasn't got the dedicated oil sump and pump a Carrier 05G has. Also, wobble plate is different from swash plate. Wobble plate is when the plate with the pistons isn't actually rotating, just like in a Sanden SD7H15 or in the aforementioned Harrison V5. In these the wobble plate is moved around by a backplate rotating behind it. Swash plate is when the plate with the pistons is actually rotating around and the pistons ride the plate on two shoes, like in the video. The two are so different mechanically that the wobble requires a thicker oil (PAG 125 for the V5, PAG 100 for the SD7H15) than the swash (PAG 46 usually). Also, accumulator is obsolete technology, required for orifice tubes. Modern systems feature TXVs and as such there's a liquid receiver and a dryer before the TXV. One more thing: see the springs around the swash plate? That's a giveaway for a variable displacement compressor. These springs offset the swash plate to minimum angle when the control valve isn't bypassing a part of the discharge inside the crankcase. A fixed displacement compressor only has a plate machined to an angle and nothing else.

I hate throwing anything away. It was fun to see how it looked inside. I’m sure you pumped it down before putting Freon back in. Since the temperature dropped below 32 I believe you need to add a little more Freon. A low charge will cause it to drop below and freeze the coil in hvac. Probably the same on a car.

The temperature didn't drop below 32F, i'm sure about that. For some reason IR gun style thermometers show below-freezing temperatures when pointed at AC vents, but the real reading (taken with a cooking thermometer equipped with a metal probe) is around 40F. Saw this happen on my car too. Also FYI with this compressor a low charge will make the vent temp get higher at idle. The lower than normal discharge will keep a high suction pressure setpoint in the control valve and the lower than normal suction will keep the compressor destroked all the time. No freeze-up will ever happen.

One scotty video is based on Dont flush an a/c system because the debris from a compressor going bad cannot be entirely removed out of the condenser. The compressor replacement video he made says Flush the system with new dryer receiver and compressor blah blah blah. You make goofy videos popping out of a trunk and everyone will believe whatever you say i guess

@@billyjack8119 That video, which I just watched he said don't just replace a compressor. At the very least replace the condenser. And every time you fully open a system you should replace the filter dryer that is just a given. After that you might need to replace the orifice, H-block, or expansion valve (depends on vehicle) if the high side pressure spikes on clutch engagement. I only watch SK stuff cause his quirkiness amuses me. But he isn't wrong in that video, you just have to listen to what he actually said.

@@heathenthatheretic5960 No I didn't. My problem was as simple as unplugging the high side pressure sensor and plugging it back in. For a week now, the clutch is cycling perfectly. Cold air.

@@heathenthatheretic5960 Hey, you can do it! Watch all the KZbin videos you can find. They'll help almost anyone become an amateur mechanic. Of course, I think it's complete BS, that the manufacturers are making back yard repairs a thing of the past. Even pricing many small repair shops out of business, with the costs of equipment needed to work on today's cars.

That half bearing didn't fall out for no reason. It'll do it again before long. Swash plate is bad or that individual piston assembly, one or both. Could've been over revved too.

Unlikely to have been over revved and failed as a result. The ECU usually temporarily disengages the clutch on the compressor when the engine goes WOT. I have a very similar compressor (Delphi CVC125 with clutch) and it behaves this way. And these compressors can rotate to very high speeds, much higher than wobble plate ones. In fact some cars have clutchless swash plate compressors, that is, WOT can only make the compressor reduce displacement, not disengage any clutch at all. The most likely reason is low oil return rate due to low refrigerant, and the film between the swash plate and the piston's shoe (it's a shoe, not a bearing) got somewhat broken as a result (if you look carefully the swash plate looks scored). Either that or defective compressor.

This doesnt explain the root cause. Their was a reason for that to happen. I wouldnt trust that repair as it will comeback locked up again.

Personally, if that happened to me i would have immediately fitted a new compressor, condenser and dryer, and had the system flushed by a pro. A seized shaft always means internal mechanical damage.
