FIXING MILWAUKEE M18 FUEL Gen 3 IMPACT DRIVER COLLET PROBLEM (must watch) One of the #VeryCoolGang shared a repair process for fixing the milwaukee M18 fuel gen3 (2853-20 & 2857-20) impact driver collet problem. We needed to dis assemble the collet make some tweaks and re-assemble the impact driver collet to make the neccesary repairs and #ToolHack to this #NothingButHeavyDuty Tool This is a must watch fixing this collet issue is critical, because the tool is not able to retain its driver and drill bits in instances which could cause a dropping hazard that could be costly if you're working up high! Fixing the damage may not be possible!

they can easily fix the issue by coming out with a gen 4 impact but they probably wont want to issue a recall and fix a million impacts....too costly for them....its cheaper for them to make the gen 4...just my opinion

highjix anyone who is already invested into Milwaukee will most likely won’t want to go to a whole different company, that’s now a different brand battery to carry, and a different brand charger to carry. It’s just more hassle, and most contractors would rather just eat the $150 than have the hassle every single day of having an odd ball out

Honestly, I never had that problem because if I’m drilling holes, I use a drill. The problem I’ve had is with me driving a lag and the chuck/collet not disengaging the hex socket.

S H I just got the problem in mine, it’s not a terrible issue but it’s defo a thing that can happen. Wearing safety glasses and making sure you turn it in if it happens will help a lot.

@@AlexDenton0451 just got the same problem with mine aswell at work after using it for about 1 week, (brand new) the spring that holds the ball bearing bent 90 degrees and was sticking out of the tool until it flew out of the tool, might be unrelated but definantly an issue, the tool was never dropped, never mishandled and all it did was loosen and mounting no bigger screws than some T30 bits probably an inch long at the most, so very light work for the time i had it (it has been sent in for warranty repair)

Hey Vince, thanks for making these videos. I know you're a big Milwaukee fan, so it's appreciated that you show honest takes on the problem. I'm A DIYer that's finally upgrading from Ryobi (they're good, I just want better) and was struggling to decide between Milwaukee and Makita. I hope Milwaukee understands that this is why I didn't choose them as the upgrade to all my tools. And it's not so much about the collet, it's about the two years and no fix. They have a lot of very smart guys working for them. They could fix this if they really wanted to do so. Keep up the strong work!

Same here. I’m heavily invested in the dewalt platform and I have a couple m12 tools but wouldn’t switch over due to this kind of stuff. They cost too much to have these kinds of issues. I don’t like that you need 2 hands to switch a bit either. With my Dewalt’s I just pull the collet with 2 fingers and it advances the bit allowing me to switch when my hands are tied.

I have both Milwaukee and Makita platforms and I think I'm done with Milwaukee, first problems with 9.0 & 12.0 replaced under warranty then this. Never had problems with collets on Makita impacts.

Go to the internet and get a ball spring from the M18 Surge model and use it to replace the ball spring in the Gen 3. Will stop the collet from getting stuck in a open position. It did at least when I did it.

So my gen three brushless fuel impact did just that yesterday. Thought it was a bit manufacturing problem. Didn't think anything of it. Then I saw your video last night. Had 3 of those Gen 3 impacts. None lasted more than 3 weeks. !! Went back to the bomb proof surge. Unfortunately the surge doesn’t have the same power but I love it ..

i use the impact for screws and nuts only. when it comes to drilling holes i grab the hammer drill, thats why i went with the gen 3 impact / hammer drill combo w/ two 5ah batts, charger and hard case.

Hey guys, I believe I have fixed (for the time being) my 3rd gen!!! I’ve been having this issue when spading, but yesterday I started have this issue every time I pulled my bit out to change it as well. So I decided to give it a try. The only thing I did differently than this video shows, is I took the spring and stretched it just a little bit to give it more upward force on the ball bearing. And I’ve been testing my impact in various ways, and it hasn’t come out once. I will comment as soon as it does, if it does. Let me know if this works for you!

Have mostly Milwalkie corded tools. Now have an impact driver with no problems yet, BUT have only driven screws with it. Hell good to know the problem, thanx. Dropping a spade bit or hole saw on flooring is a serious matter in our work.

I did not read through all the comments to see if anyone commented on this but your thought was right regarding the tail of the ball bearing spring could be cut off. The new model (I just bought) has the end curled in a circle under the ball bearing instead of the "U" found on your model. Still does not seem to have the proper angle on is so I followed what u did and turned it up into the ball bearing and it seems to have helped. Love your videos!

I recently purchased Milwaukee for my father all gen 3 and I waited to find something comparable, I actually decided to try the xtr line from kobalt and I have been nothing but satisfied, I really hope Milwaukee will fix this and honor replacements on gen 3 impacts, both brands works pretty flawlessly for our concrete business but I'd love to see the Collet issue taken care of, also thanks for the reviews so I had the opportunity to see what was worth the money. Hi Vince, Thanks for the video. At least you tried it. Hopefully milwaukee can find a solution. It started to happen to my milwaukee gen 3 impact. I still have my DeWalt DCF 887 (type 3). I re-greased my dewalt DCF 887 with Amsoil synthetic grease and it's been holding up and working great. It gets a little warm but normal. It doesn't get extremely hot or over heat like before and like the other models (type 1 & 2). Don't get me wrong the milwaukee gen 3 is still a stronger impact but that colet issue is annoying. Just wanted to share.

I really love everything you guys do. I've been watching your videos for years and been following your videos on the collet problem since the beginning. I own the same impact driver and luckily haven't had that issue yet, thankfully. But I mostly use it for soffet and gutters. Its still the best impact out there in MY opinion. Can't deny that power! I was hopeful with the increased retention that this was going to do the trick. Kudos to the idea and attempt to share the fix which is more than the manufacturer has done to this point. I’ve watched but declined to comment before since my initial view hasn’t changed. I’d still like to see if a double bearing collet would be better and maybe the retention indents of different brands sync up to a more uniform tolerance across all. I have nothing against the daredevils but their indents seem to have a much larger indent throw which then allows the ball bearing to simply ramp up and out of the indent upon pulling the bit out. Couple that with the force in pulling the bit out also coincides with the fact that the collet may also be getting forced into its natural release position, if that makes sense. Heck, maybe Milwaukee might just want to reverse the collet so pulling it towards the motor housing releases the bit , lol. Soap box put away, appreciate what you do! Stay safe all!

My bits always fall out with Milwukee. Thought it was just me putting them in wrong. Sometimes they get stuck - especially the spade bits when i'm drilling holes in wood . Never had that issue with ryobi. Also Milwukee does not have a magnetic catch to hold screws/bits. only two downsides. Will try the spring trick you showed. Also will order more parts incase I loose something.

I've had the same exact issue with my impact gun. I love it, the power it has and the size. Great gun but that collar issue sucks. Can't tell you how many times I've had a wire wheel or cup on and it has came off. Very dangerous situation. Thanks for the instructional video

I've never lost a bit like that, but then again I don't yank on the driver when reversing the bit out. It comes out just fine on it's own. I use spade bits constantly with my work as well, and while I can see this happening with the type of release system, the type of demonstrations or work that cause this to happen is only under extreme circumstances/abuse. Though regardless I personally don't need the quick release setup, and wish that Milwaukee would just let us use a non quick release collet if we so choose to.

Man I was really hoping this fix would work so it could crush the TTR's. When it was new was the collet a problem, or did it just become an issue over time and gradually become borderline unusable for pull outs? If it was a gradual thing I would say that likely the springs are stretched, and a good solution would be to order both springs and maybe ball bearing assembly from Milwaukee. If it was an issue the entire time then replacement parts likely would change nothing like this hack did. Thanks for the vid.

I found the problem with the collet in Milwaukee impact driver gen 3. My old Mastercraft Impact driver has to be pushed in to insert the bit. On Milwaukee, it has to be "pulled" to release so it is the opposite. So when trying to remove the drill bit with Milwaukee, you pull the tool up and that is exactly what this Milwaukee tool needs to release the bit. Conclusion, Milwaukee will have to change the direction of the collet, instead of pulling, {to release the bit} pushing will do lock the collet in place and the bit will remind in the tool when pulling up to remove the drill bit from the work piece. Very simple, now Milwaukee engineers get to work haha.

Twenty-something years in construction and I've been using Ryobi, DeWalt and among some other toes but most of my tools I use are Ryobi, I've used Milwaukee and Makita for some reason I prep for the Ryobi impact drivers

I HAVE THE FIX!! The issue is the sleeve/collet that is supposed to hold the ball down is worn and is slightly tapered on the inside of the collet where it meets the ball. Withdrawing the bit while drilling will put pressure on the ball and force the collet up, so the bit gets released. THE FIX: I ground the bottom of the collet so when installed it will sit lower letting the ball the contact the inside of the collet where it's not tapered. Sooner or later that non-tapered area will get tapered too, but this WILL fix the problem. I've tested this and it works.

Hey Vince now that you've shown me the internals of the mechanism it seems to me what you're looking at is a tensioning issue with one of the springs but I'm not entirely certain it's actually the spring down there holding the ball bearing in it may be a tensioning issue with the collet spring not leaving the collet completely engaged. Does seem like very very fine Springs for such a hard use application. The best course of action might be to beef up one or both of those springs.

ive never had the collet problem. i would suggest its not an occurrence with every single driver. i guess i got lucky. cant recommend the Milwaukee driver enough. i use it mostly for cabinet making and carpentry. but i have used it extensively for duct installation and driving into steel frames. never an issue. the power delivered, the tension control, and the battery life is phenomenal.

Hi Vince good vid but I think the person who suggested the fix is barking up the wrong tree. The issue isnt with that sping with the bend in it, it is the fact that the collet is stopping in such a place that the ball is still on the ramp on the inside and not on the flat. When pressure is applied by pulling on the bit, the ball forces the collet forward and hence disengages. The ball needs to sit on the flat at the top if the ramp i.e. further back on the tool. Behind the second spring is a quite a fat flat washer which if it was slimmer would allow the collet to sit further back. I would have tried this but I think finding the right size washer would be a pain so I put the rear of the collet, not the knurled end, on to an angle grinder and took some material off. This now allows the collet to sit further back ensuring the ball can not force it forward to disengage. If milwaukee wants to rectify this the cheapest option would probably be a thinner washer or the more expensive option is to reduce the length of the collet (try holding it up to the collet on the M12 impact and you will see a slight difference). Hope this helps. p.s. please note if you are going to grind the rear of your collet, make sure you put a champfer on the inside edge so that it does not catch on the spring causing the same issue and bend the indent in the spring downwards with pliers.

Ugh, Mikita got stolen and decided on the Fuel. Less than a year in this starts happening. Makita lasted 10+ years. Thankfully a good tap on some concrete as demonstrated here did the trick. Thanks!

Mine worked great for like 8 months then started to have this issue as well. It also has a weird issue now when I pull the trigger the tool will do nothing with a charged battery. Only thing that will bring it back to life is switching the speed setting.

I still use a standard drill, like the xph07 or milwaukee 2804 for drilling, i just havent seen any advantage to using an impact for paddle bits and drilling holes in general, drill chuck holds it good, and is faster than an impact when drilling, driving screws is a different story...

The problem isn’t the spring you adjusted in the video. The problem is the first spring that holds the retaining clip. I found that if you pull the quick release and release it slowly it doesn’t have enough force to reseat the mechanism and allows bits to come out. If you pull the quick release and allow it to reseat by letting go when it’s fully extended it will hold each and every time. A stiffer spring that holds the retaining clip can fix this problem.

Can you say "Patented Protected" ? Believe it or not, manufacturers pull a patented for multiple parts of a piece of equipment for this very reason. And it may stop another company from attempting to design a competing tool or device.

I just returned the one I bought. It takes 2 hands to change the bits, the light is crap, and it shakes the shit out of your hand if running in lags. It's also loud and gets hot. My old brushed Dewalt, while not as fast, transmits a fraction of the vibration to the hand that the Fuel driver does. The Dewalt also has single-hand bit changing and has a good light.

I was just about to buy a Milwaukee impact driver to complement my M18 Fuel drill but I won't be one after seeing this video, thanks for saving me from an expensive mistake. I'll be buying a Makita one now to match my other drills.

If a company knows about an obvious problem like this and hasn’t done anything in 2 years, that’s a sign of a serious management problem. Rare occurrence? Didn’t car companies say the same thing about metal pieces flying out of their airbags, engines catching on fire, and countless other excuses manufacturers have made over the years? If management got serious about it, it could’ve been fixed years ago. SAD.

Thanks for vid Vince. I never use my impact to drill so I think this will fix my issue of just putting in a bit to watch it sometimes go shooting down into the elevator pit cuz it just fell out. There seems to be better tension now and I'll take that. Appreciate all that you do.

I run into this issue with the collet too, always those daredevil bits! Honestly though, a bigger issue of mine is my 9.0 wobbles on my fuel sawzall so much now I can use them!!! So frustrating

Great video vin man , I saw your first video about this when I bought my drill driver kit. I noticed it had a single ball bearing and was a little sketchy so I use my drill for drilling my driver for driving. So so far so good . Thanks again for the heads up Vinny 👍👌

Hi, what about combining this trick with the previous one of using a larger ball bearing? I bought myself a proper German Metabo brushless impact to join the brushless 18v drill. The engineering quality is amazing.

I'm about to buy an aftermarket collet insert and just weld the fooker right in. I had 2 milwaukee fuel impacts from 2018 and NEVER had the issue. I plan on taking them apart to see if there is any noticeable difference. Could be something as simple as the grade of spring steel or even tolerance on the ball bearing itself. Either way, not thrilled

I see great deals on gen 3 now - did they fix it? I guess it's fixed in 4th gen for sure but 3rd are discounted now. Also - I don't plan to drill with impact DRIVER :D It's not a drill so maybe that won't affect me

Only time I've had an issue was when I was using the DeWalt flexible right angle extension in the Fuel impact driver. It's happened several times and only using that attachment, so I figured it was the attachment that was at fault and not the chuck. Thanks for the heads up

There are a ton of good products that have flaws. Look at cars. I challenge you to find a good car that doesn't have some issues. That said, I much prefer DeWalt collets. ;)

Haven’t had a problem with mine yet. Drill on wood, but I do lubricate the collet with wd40, and I use the drill not the driver for paddle bits.

I've never noticed an issue with my milwaukee impact driver, but I keep a magnetic bit holder in the collet all the time.

I did the repair with the dewalt dcf886 The spring was broken , I ended up using the same spring , reshape the part where it holds the bearing in place
