The Peninsula Island Challenge has 4 simple rules:
1. Realistic Settings
2. No Land Connections to the Island
3. At max USSR 2 Customs Houses, 0 NATO
4. Hard Money
Mods are allowed and probably even required at times. I will stick to Vanilla at least for industries.

Pro tip - always place signage on every intersection that sees any traffic. I did some tests, and it massively speeds up the flow of traffic. (I know you're already doing that, but you said in the video that you try to avoid signage normally which struck me as odd, hence this comment) More details for anyone else reading: - Vehicles slow down to 50kph when going through an intersection without signage regardless of the road type - If you have multiple intersections close to each other it's very easy to get deadlocked traffic without signage (as seen in the video) - Never combine intersection nodes unless in a very low traffic area. It significantly reduces the number of vehicles that can use the given area of the road at the same time (vehicles wait outside the intersection until it's free), thus reducing the maximum throughput of the intersection and the whole adjacent road network - Even if intersection nodes are very close to each other, put signs on them separately - I know this often results in signs in the middle of the road, but it is the price you pay for efficiency. That said, road angles can be designed so that this cosmetic issue doesn't happen. Sorry for the rant, but I am quite passionate about traffic lol. I build my republics tight, with few roads and lots of vehicles, so I got to spend a lot of time optimizing road design.

Haha! And never build all your main infrastructure coming straight onto your main road... Minimise entries onto main thoroughfares. Recipe for later game (and even early game) headaches (like we saw with the bridge thing here)... Think ahead on roads too, like utilities, and then you can always leave room to expand and improve your road networks. Bballjo is great at industry and trains and general game management, but I always really, really cringe at his road networks and he always ends up with these traffic problems. Sorry, Bballjo, I like your W & R videos generally but other creators do roads much, much better. Watch Bballjo for lots of info on tips and tricks and how to make industry work and make money and for trains - he's great at those! But I would definitely recommend that new players view other creators for how to do effective roads. Roads should be planned and future-proofed (like Bballjo does with his utilities with switches), not just dumped down to connect stuff. There are some really lovely road planners out there on KZbin who will show you how to make effective roads.🙂

As I see you also have similar thoughts about size of some buildings. They should add small-mid version of them, with unefficient ration but still.

Regarding the truck situation at the start, the trick is to build the COs and loading spots on secondary roads that then connect to the main road. Also for gravel loading I only use a modded oneway station.

fyi: the new electrical substations should be able to work at full capacity when connecting two underground cables. Yes, underground cables take a bit longer to build but it just makes my live so much easier in tight spaces!

Yeah... underground wires will always feel like cheating...it's just in my head, and I will use it at times ;)

@bballjo Some might consider placing electrical poles on top of each other as felling cheaty 😅 On a more serious note, I'm happy with the trade-off of more build time and less capacity vs less head aches afterwards. But I respect your choice of going all in on the surface!

It is not really a choice, just that the tracklength is not long enough.

Hey bballjo, Great that you created a redundancy for Fire Station. I'm playing on your map and was trying to catch up, but I just got a massive 7.3 earth quake that among others it destroyed the only shopping center of my first city. Needless to say that I just had to restart, but learned my lesson and from now on I'm placing a redundant small shopping center right next to the big one so they share the warehouse. But hey, now the warehouse to which I'm delivering food, clothes and electronics can be destroyed as well... In fact for the first city nearly all infrastructure for citizen needs and emergency services should be redundant, except for water and sewage which can be temporarily provided with trucks if the planned infrastructure somehow gets destroyed. We already use multiple kindergartens in a city and also multiple universities in the first city, but maybe a second school should be also planned. Comrade ... such is the wonderful life of a Tovarishch Glavnyy Gorodskoy Arkhitektor of the Soviet Republic. :)

fyi currently pergola does not count toward walking distance so they could be used to extend pathing if you're missing just a couple of meters

bballjo: _starts building radio station on peninsula_ me: meh, I'll build it on the island so I'd have one more reason to start building there and I still haven't even though I'm making enough money to start doing that 51:14 "400 workers warrants a train" meanwhile, I use a few big busses to bring about 600 workers to the oil refinery and the adjacent waste industry and they're quite far from the city (granted, they're technically modded busses that are available from the soviet side from '60 and '66, but they have about the same capacity as the vanilla Ikarus 280 that shows up in '72 and they are based on IRL Hungarian busses) 1:08:12 literally had to do an internet search to explain to me what a pergola is :D to me it seems they can be used the same way as some fountains to extend walking range though it is weird they're listed under underpasses

Yes, this is more a peninsula challenge than an island challenge. Already 3 industries at the peninsula, fuel and chemicals have to follow because there's no oil on the island. We'll already have a big, profitable republic with everything it needs, the island expansion is going to be "just because we can"... I think it's a combination of the game mechanics, which simply require to build a lot of infrastructure before your first major expansion (2 universities, justice chain, waste disposal, ...) and also bbaljo's decisions. E.g. the rail network is only really needed to serve that humongous and completely unnecessary gravel industry. I think it would have been better to start with fuel and chemicals as the only industries (plus 1 quarry+processing for local needs), avoid rail and go directly for shipping infrastructure and then jump to the island asap. Maybe start with medium money to make skipping the typical "textiles first" possible.

@Rdlprmpf12 the peninsulas job is to prop up the island...I think you will be surprised about our running costs for the first years (10-20) after we get to the island. For this challenge, its very important that the peninsula produces a lot of sustainable income, but money is never a real challenge in this game...there is something much more important later on. You'll see ;)

Servus, the Pergola is there to extend the walking range a little bit, to squeeze out a few extra meters if needed :) if you have two footpaths with the same length in total and one of them has a pergola in it then this is the shorter one. How about a prisonisland like alcatraz on one of the little Islands? ❤ thanks for the series!

wish there was a straightforward way to rebuild a road in situ, e.g. to turn a bend in the road into a T junction like at 21:20

I mean...yes...but I don't mind the very manageable hoops for road upgrades... however, power lines are a different beast

You can place whichever one you want. The small containers just fill up fast, and extra space helps truck efficiency

It can be easier to fit smaller ones as they join to footpaths and it gives a nice separation of town/industry waste so they are handled differently even if the ranges of technical services overlap.

It's footprint makes it expensive real estate to have in a small city...I may just move it to a larger city later on.

You need a prison bus, and you have to bring them directly to the workplace (no bus stops)

@@bballjo thx :) also do you have strange changes in citizen happiness? I'm in year 2036 now and had 99 happiness then dropped to 60+ with no reason at all, and went back to 95+ again, how to deal with it ?

99 happiness means you play on easy settings...I'm not very familiar with effect for that level...but I'm guessing you didn't have food, heat, power for a while

@@bballjo yup i use low reaction from citizens and no repairing in my save. Hmmm might be water problem cuz I rebuilded infrastructure for it about 3 times and still something is not perfect.

Use the overlays, and follow some citizens around... maybe you have small pockets of unhappiness...and I hope it's not crime related;)

So far the "island challenge" has not become closer to "island"much, but stopped being a challenge few episodes ago already.😢 Why not just play this with unlimited money, then? It would have saved you few episodes of repetitive start and let you be focused on the island right away

@@bballjo not having an infinite supply is at least resemblance to a challenge. Having hundreds of thousands instead of steady influx of millions feels certainly closer to a challenge, despite it not being one. Hence the Husak challenge and allowance to export of only what you 100% made in house (no imports anywhere back throughout the chain besides fuel, power and chemicals for water production). It makes it a proper challenge for much longer gaming period and avoids cheesing export prices like this ;)

@siriusczech I've done several rounds of super slowed down gameplay with handicapped rules...they don't add much in form of entertainment, it's just slower, which means I skip more...you know that!

Plus...we actually don't have that much money, as we will start speaking in terms of helis and ships and ship loads very soon...

@@bballjo slower means more time for development, need to grow while on edge with finances. That went away before a 2nd city is even placed. And as someone who watched a player go about ALL those rules including own ships and helis manufacturing, while being on the verge of needing to switch to USD exports only, you cannot probably top that, as you have no deadlines and no limits. I still will watch here and there, but will skip as well - exactly as you told
