love this lesson. I’ve always found Bud Powell a little bit difficult to parse, but this really helped. By the way, have you done any videos where you focus on the idea of singing your solo either before, during or in parallel with playing as a way to break muscle-memory driven playing?

A great tip. A simple to apply approach (that will need work) to freshen up ideas . Hunting for a melodic idea all the time is quite difficult. Thanks for the great analysis. Using shapes also sounds like a great idea.

Oh yes, the trio recording of ornithology, Bud was smoking on this date. I've listened to it so much but haven't heard it in years. I've transcribed afew bud solos on trumpet, pretty hard and intense shit. Keep up the good work!

Jeremy you know I am your greatest fan, the lesson is top notch as always but the piano sound is distorted, maybe if you use a microphone 🎙 close to your mouth you could keep the general volume in a better range, I see other jazz piano teacher on KZbin like Tony Winston use this technique and it works. Of course you need a mic stand and it’s not so beautiful to see but it’s worth trying :)

@@JeremySiskind your videos are great, and I see you are trying your best hiding the microphone for esthetic reasons, but there is no need to hide it, if you watch Tony Winston videos he uses a microphone a few inches from his mouth and Chordie app to show the notes he plays, I think it’s the best setup for teaching, along with maybe a pdf of your notes on google drive for each lesson as also another great channel called jazzmentl does. Anyway you are in the top three of the best!

Should all phrases be more than an octave? Isn’t better to mix norrow phrases with wider ones to get more variety?

It’s just an exercise. You certainly don’t have to play all of your faces more than an octave in real life, but for students whose improvisations are a little bit more monotone, forcing yourself to get outside of an octave will be a nice counterbalance
