Thanks so much. I really do enjoy making the videos. But it wouldn’t be as much fun without all of you out there watching and commenting!

I’ve never messed with one of these modern Lionel steamers before. I mainly enjoy postwar and, MPC era. I do like this 0-8-0. They’re plentiful and, a nice looking chunky switcher. This project of yours will probably motivate me to buy one. 😀
@dagryffynhobby9 ай бұрын
You are right there are a lot of them. I’m hoping my repair actually works out. I’ve been very happy with my other 0-8-0, really runs well.

Dave when I saw the motor I said "Uh-huh." It's almost a dead-ringer for the small motors used in the copiers I used to work on. I'd see them in document feeders, toner feed systems, sorters, paper feed units, you name it. And yes, they can go bad. Some last for the life of the machine and some don't, just like the circuit boards. You never know. Anyway I think it's a sure thing the new motor from Lionel should fix the problem. Try it with some dedicated DC from the transformer before you hook it up to the e-unit to make sure it's good, then try it with the e-unit. The reason I say this is there's the possibility when the old motor went it MIGHT have taken the e-unit with it. Not a big possibility but it's there just the same. That was a great tutorial on deducing the right screws to remove for disassembly! I'll remember that! Good video! Thanks for posting!

Sounds like a Xerox guy. There were a few company’s that Xerox favored small can DC motors for prototype work that were far better quality. Globe and Pitman both made one for slot cars very high quality. The worm gear s/b available from aftermarket. Cheaper motors from Mabuchi were available cheap, cheap at one time but I see unrealistic prices today.

@@genemanno1533 Actually Canons first, then Ricohs! Both used those little DC motors.

Thanks Wayne. I’m hoping it’s just the motor. But I won’t be surprised if the board is dead too. The fact that the motor did try to turn makes me hopeful.

My favorite 0-8-0 was the IHB 3 cylinder switcher. I know Lionel madeone BTO but I can't afford i$750 locomotive.😢

Thanks, Dave. It's been my experience and a little unusual to get an engine that has defective motors or components for that matter. I hope this is an isolated issue as it's a little concerning for me since I have a couple of these engines. I have never had a reason to take mine apart before. So I was glad to see one apart. You tackle your repairs the same way as I. I find most things with this hobby dealing with the unknown the 1st time works best to approach like a puzzle. One step at a time while looking for the most likely place for the piece to go, starting with the most likely place like the border. I always dive in with both feet from start to finish, and then, and only then It dawns on me to Google the schematics. I wish I would think of that before I dive in. It would possibly save some time and definitely a little grief. I wish you luck with your repair. I know you'll get'er done. The parts to repair these have gotten stupid. It's becoming hard justifying repairing some of these because a single part can be a deal breaker by the time you factor the cost of the engine. One can get upside down pretty quickly. Coupler assemblies are $15.00 for plastic ones now. I wouldn't have thought of going directly to Lionel since my Lionel rep at the train shows charges the same price as the sellers on eBay less shipping.

Hopefully the motor is the extent of the issue. I imagine someone was rough on it. Most times when I need parts I just look for another unit. Buying trucks at $20 each makes no sense if I can find a boxcar with the same trucks for $15! I figure either way with this engine I’ll learn something.

Hi Dave. From our experience the motor goes bad and short out and take out the e unit board. This is a common problem. We usually replace both.
@dagryffynhobby9 ай бұрын
Thanks Harry. I hope the board is ok but we will see. I had assumed that the motor might take out the board but I’m hoping luck is on my side

I am amazed at your skill in doing this! My question is why would a brand new engine have garbage in the motor? Is that a failure of quality control?
@dagryffynhobby9 ай бұрын
Smoke and mirrors. lol. It’s not brand new, it’s maybe 10 years old or so, I’m sure it’s seen some heavy use over the year

I've got one of those and it is a really good puller. which makes me wonder what someone did to that locomotive to burn the motor up like that?
@wayneantoniazzi27069 ай бұрын
They may not have done anything. I saw plenty of small motors like that one in my 30 years of copier repair and they CAN go bad. Not all do, but I've had to replace plenty just the same.
