As others have said, good video. Another tip for prevention of stripped plastic or metal threads is apply a very small bit of grease to the screw and back it in and out a few times as Dave described.

Possible that the smoke unit on/off switch was wired backwards. Try turning the smoke switch "off" to see if the smoke starts.

I tried and nothing. I’ll fiddle with it again soon
@wayneantoniazzi27069 ай бұрын
I kind of doubt it, every smoke unit on-off switch on one of my engines does nothing more than interrupt the current to the smoke unit when it's turned off. Wired backwards no, but installed backwards maybe.

Great job, Dave. It looked a little more complex than what I was thinking. I'm glad you got her running again. I can't help but get my engines running again ASAP, either. It bugs me if they're not working. I don't do shelf Queens. I don't think you got hurt. It's a nice little engine. The set should be worth 100 + in running condition. A seller on eBay is asking $165.00 for this same model.

Great job Dave! Like yourself I wouldn't have purchased that engine for $53 either as it just doesn't fill any need of mine BUT it was a good learning experience for you. The smoke unit might be bad but I believe Lionel smoke units of that vintage (around the year 2000, before and after) were bit anemic. I've got a couple of Camelbacks that had weak units, I replaced the innards and wired them direct for track voltage, not voltage from a circuit board and it improved things a bit. On a scale of 1 to 10 they went from a 2 to a 5, good enough. Just so everyone else knows coarse thread screws on this or any other toy train are for the plastic parts. The plastic part screws are pretty analogous to a wood screw, tighten them down just enough to hold well but don't over-tighten, you'll strip out the plastic just like an overtightened wood screw will strip out the wood. Glad to see everything worked out for you Dave! I'm doing a local show this weekend (The Virginia Train Collectors Show), the idea being to unload some things I don't need and pick up things I didn't KNOW I needed! 🤩

Thanks Wayne. I’ll have to try working the smoke unit to track power, it would be nice to have more smoke. My other 0-8-0 smokes decent only if the power is cranked all the way up.
@wayneantoniazzi27069 ай бұрын
@@dagryffynhobby Yeah, that sounds exactly like the anemic smoke units I mentioned, they only smoked fairly well when the engine had a load on it like a long train it had to work hard to pull or the transformer was turned WAY up. I also replaced the smoke unit components with some liquid smoke rebuild kits from Henning's figuring they'd work better off track power than the original equipment.

Interesting there is only one worm gear set reduction. Most post war AC Lionel have at least two gear stage reduction. A worm set along with a spur gear set. Double stage gearing helps torque and starting slowly without staggering. This engine looks fast. Weight always help smooth out motion. Doesn’t look like much real-estate for weights. Pretty engine😊 the mechanism looks cool running. Small engine w/small cars is a nice fit on your tracks. Sharp looking😊
@dagryffynhobby9 ай бұрын
Good point. I find it odd that it is so much faster than my other 0-8-0, both conventional and essentially the same engine.

Nice repair on that little engine. The clicking would be on the top of my list of priorities to figure out where it’s coming from. That’s one of those weird things that I can deal with just about anything but a click or squeak has got to go lol.
@dagryffynhobby9 ай бұрын
Thanks. I agree. I’ll probably take it all apart again soon.
@wayneantoniazzi27069 ай бұрын
The clicking may, I say MAY, be coming from the puffer component of the smoke unit. I've got two Lionel Camelbacks that were making a clicking noise that was somewhat noticeable when they rolled past. Kind of drove me nuts for a bit until it dawned on me it was the puffer activating lever. Now that I know what it is I ignore it! I think it was the not knowing that was annoying me the most.
@dagryffynhobby9 ай бұрын
@@wayneantoniazzi2706 it’s definitely the lever on my other engine. Maybe this one too
